Mole trapping is just another one of those things you need to do on the homestead. One thing I forgot to mention in the description is that their tunnels can cause _big-time_ erosion on hilly areas. Best and easiest mole solution. Caught one in the first two hours after setting the traps. And since then the traps have eliminated 7 moles. I'm glad it's working for you! One note about moles though - they are cannibalistic, and placing the body back in the hole is just feeding them. I've found that if I don't clear the trap fast enough, the other moles will eat the mole in the trap 😮

Thanks Mole Joe. I bought two Mole Eliminators, set them as you recommended and immediately caught 2 moles with minutes. I reset the traps the next day in my back yard and caught a third mole. The trap absolutely works and I am thankful I ran across your video.

Our border collie is pretty good at digging for moles as well 😉 - but definitely no terrier! The cats even dig for them and have caught a few - but they make a real mess doing so!

Nope. Tetanus shots for dogs? Or any new treatments from a wild animal bite. A bite or even a nibble could be problematic.

Thanks Jim. One year I got like eight moles within 24 hours! Make sure you don't set the trap on 'dead end' tunnels and these will work fantastic! Main tunnel, main tunnel, main tunnel 😉

Excellent advice. Moles can be a bad yard problem. And then they can be a foundation problem, and then other problems like water damages, and then it becomes an expensive house, yard, problem.

I’m so thankful for your video! My yard has been torn all to he**. I cannot take a chance on falling and breaking a bone. Already had a hip replacement because of a fall. Anyone who wants to save these destructive things can have them in their yards. You would not believe the damage they’ve done to my yard. All around trees and tore up my sidewalks and patio!!! Thank you Barbara! A tip for the future: Use grub control granules that you can get from any big box store. Just follow the directions on the bag. Moles are after grubs and worms, and if you get rid of the grubs, you will have a lot less tunnels. 😊

@@PlanetMojo If you ever get your yard clear of them, they make a gadget that you stick in the ground and vibrates. It's supposed to keep them out, kinda like an electric fence. I've never tried it, but I read that it works if you have enough of them. I'll see if I can find the name of it.😊🐝❤ They are solar ultrasonic mole repellant. At Harbor Freight and Amazon and others.

This is absolutely the best mole trap I've ever used!!! However CAUTION: If using scissor model with round activator plate/disk, be sure disk is positioned flat against the ground before stepping-on to set trap. Disk is welded to a post and If disk happens to be at an angle against the ground the weld can break -- disk snap off -- and trap become worthless.

THANK YOU for showing a couple times how it works. I did so many things but I wasn’t understanding how it set off. The tunnel I picked was deeper. Now that I completely understand how it’s triggered I can do better. I was also digging holes to get to tunnel. I will find a more shallow tunnel and won’t dig a hole. But thank you again for the trap explanation, so many others missed the info I needed

Thank you for a sensible, thorough video. I live in the Pacific Northwest and moles have been incredibly destructive in a new home I purchased last May. Moles were here but not visible at the time I looked at my now home. But upon move-in day mounds were everywhere! Like you, I have tried everything from smoke bombs, poison worms, castor oil mix, and juicy fruit gum. I finally resorted to trapping and bought an old fashioned Victor Out Of Sight trap because it was the only one the local hardware store sold. Nothing so far. I finally bought wire tek ones on Amazon and luckily they have the plates as you described. I watch many videos for these traps before I set them. I am now excited to try them, especially since I don’t have to “peel” back some lawn or dig yet another hole. So many thanks for an informative video for these traps and keeping the screaming kids out of the video. Like what are parents thinking letting their 5 year old running around the traps and touching dead moles in the videos. That is annoying. Again, thank you.

Hey same here 😂 PNW just re seeded and added some top soil and moles came visit a couple weeks after, I’ve seen mole hills everywhere, just got these off amazon so looking forward for tomorrow now.

I bought a Mole Eliminator trap a year ago and it works great! Watch for fresh mole digging set the trap according to the directions and it usually catches them from 2 to 24 hours later, never fails.

I agree. I would never buy a different trap now! One thing about moles is that they come in waves. Two years ago we had dozens of them and the entire lawn was riddled with tunnels. It was the same way across the entire state. This year, one mole and no tunnels since then.

Hi 👋, very interesting, last week I counted over 50 hole hills in my France garden, I cleared the garden of molehills then cut my grass, 2 day later over 50 , I have tried gas and lots of other stuff, completely useless, I even nearly brought some electric devices €80 , I am now trying to find your recommended traps, not sure if they are available over here, Phil from the moulin France.

We bought the less expensive version of this scissor trap, but it has worked beautifully so far. We've already caught 3. Yay!

No idea how so many can fit in a tiny 60x40 plot of land with a house smack dab in the middle. Thought they were super territorial. Thanks Larry, possibly a different type of mole in the UK? The one's we have here cause major damage and are notorious carriers of rabies. They have a place, but not in the yard 😊

Hi Drue, they are great for tunneling! Whether the tunnels themselves are good or bad depends on where they are located. 😊

I have bought both types, (wire and plates) both types work awesome.. I get about 20 moles per year and neither seem to work better than the other..

Thanks for the video. BTW: the manufacturer recommends against oil as it may keep the moles away.

Appreciate the entire video! I was trying to find something “humane,” but the truth is, the dogs are digging after the moles, and making the tunnels cave and deepen, and all of us have come too close to twisting our ankles over this. It’s like having mice in your basement - sometimes you have to eliminate them, or there will be way more costly damage to everyone and everything!

Thank you Ashley. I was the same way, and that led to an infestation! One hint for mole control is to use grub killer. If you have lots of moles, you likely have lots of grubs. Use grub killer and the moles may disappear completely - but it takes a couple years. Traps and Grub Killer combined should do the trick. Good luck! 😊

Another tip I forgot to mention is that if you cannot figure out the main tunnel and are getting no action after, say, a week, just step down all of the tunnels and make them start over. Then you will find the main tunnel. Good luck Samlon!

I am trying milky spore to reduce grubs, but I wonder about earthworms. I think moles eat earthworms , so maybe I wasted my money. You need to put down more milky spore (3 times a year), and it is not cheap

I've been fighting moles for 27 years and this is the only trap that works for me. But you need to "hunt" the mole and determine which tunnels are being used. I also loosened the scissor bolts for higher sensitivity. I pressed down a small area on an active tunnel and situated the trigger plate directly above it. I also rocked the scissor blades back and forth prior to latching for freer movement when it snaps. The mole did not repair the tunnel for 9 days just after a heavy rain. So, it's like hunting. It takes some patience and knowledge of mole behavior for success.

I do mostly the same thing, but have not adjusted the sensitivity or rocked the trap - I catch moles with the trap right out of the box. You are correct, you need to find a main pathway , and the better you are at that the more success you will have. They are very good traps indeed 😊

I've been frustrated for 15 years and losing the battle big time! Now I have new hope; just ordered 2 and can't wait to start exterminating! Great job on the video! Great explanation and camera movement. Kudos!

Thanks Chuck. The entire process is based on getting the mole to repair the part you stepped down, and finding the correct tunnel to step down. Be very sure to find where the moles are actually living - usually tall grass or woods - and step down a tunnel leading to the yard from there. Good luck! 🤞😁

In the Pacific Northwest our moles just make mounds all over, they never leave trails right under the surface that we can see, that's a new one for me, yours are more destructive leaving dead grass trails. My brother made a shotgun shell trap that shoots straight down and blows them up.

My pest trapping guy suggested using Milky Spore, granules that kill the grubworms in the soil. You put it down 3 times a year. The product gets better the second year. The Milky Spore is not cheap, but I am trying it. I started having mole and vole problems after I put down compost on the lawn in the spring. The soil got richer and the grub population exploded! I am going to try this trap and see if it works for voles as well. They are very difficult to get rid of. My pest guy tried to put Victor mouse traps at the entrance of the holes, but they didn't catch anything.

Killing grubs will lessen or get rid of moles completely - but it must be kept up, and is insanely expensive on a very large yard.

Thank you very much for making this video. I'm going to try using this particular mole trap because all the other traps I've used have mostly failed. My mole problem for the past two years has been pretty bad so I'm really hoping this will be the solution for me. Love your dog, btw. Is it a border collie? Looks like one to me. My wife had one and I gotta tell ya, they're the best and smartest breed of dog, hands down.

😬 Yikes, a face only its mother could love. I imagine that in the pastures those mole holes would be dangerous to horses when they are running around?

Hi Drue, they actually are not a problem for the horses. The horses walking around collapses their tunnels underground so they stay away. They actually live mostly in the woods where the ground is soft, or in the gardens and lawn. They are a big danger to a small fast-moving dog like Izzy who could easily break a leg in one of their tunnels, or give a bite that can cause rabies 😟

Thank you - very useful. Don't know about anyone else's area - but I get fire ants where the moles/gophers tunnel and have heard the tunnels attract more moles/gophers and even snakes, too (on top of killing the grass and making the yard unlevel and a mess to mow). I have one of these and will try it again now that I can see how you are having success using yours. I also have caught several gophers with the Gopher Hawk traps/if you set them right.

This is such a helpful video. Thank you! I just ordered a two-pack of Wire Tek Mole Eliminator Traps and wanted to see how easy it would be for me to set the traps as opposed to the Molecat we currently have that my husband has to set for me. One question, though… not sure if you have any experience with this. I rarely see mole trails; most of the time it’s their mounds I see, either in my lawn or right next to a plant in my garden. Can I stick them on top of the mounds and still have success? Most of the time, there is a defined opening to a tunnel under the mound, but in the past few years, I’ve only seen 2-3 trails. Thanks again! ☺️

Thanks Kimmie, these traps work when the mole tries to repair the tunnel you stepped down. They push the dirt up with their head, and that's what springs the trap. I don't think it will work on the top of a mound unfortunately, but you can try. It's best to find a tunnel though...

Is it possible you have voles? They are also called pocket gophers. They are like mice. They make small holes at intervals and their tunnels run between them. Voles will eat the roots of plants, especially some bulbs like daylilies or plants with fleshy roots like bananas. You will see a wilted plant, and when you pick it up, it will have no roots and there will be a hole leading to a tunnel under it! They are even more destructive than moles and they are active in the winter as well. I have filled in the small holes and then see which hole has had the dirt pushed out of it. I think I would also have to figure out which way the tunnel is running. They don't make mounds along the top of the ground, so it may be harder to get this product to work.

It would have been nice to see how you actually released the mole.

Depends on where you live. In our area bluegrass is used for most lawns, but bluegrass is not going to sprout until it cools down. Sometimes it can be forced by watering several times a day, but generally you need to wait until late summer to plant cool season grass.

I’ve got this exact trap & unfortunately I’ve failed to catch any moles. I think the problem is my extremely sandy soil. It’s virtually impossible to find any tunnels. I just have mole hills. They’re either traveling so far underground that there are no surface tunnels or the sandy soil just collapses & doesn’t maintain a tunnel. My neighbor has several “gopher hawk” traps & constantly catches moles with them. I guess I’m going to have to buy one

Hi, thanks for the video. I have just overseeded and aerated my front lawn and these guys are destroying it all, plus I have a hilly front yard to make it worse. I ended up buying the gopherhawk trap, 2 tomcats and 2 of these you have, but they sent me the version that doesn't have the plate on the base. It hast same mechanism. After you reseed and push the ground flat with your feet, do you water this seed (i see you uploaded this in April and it looks like fescue). I have tall fescue too and winter is coming and this suckers are destroying it all. I may just have to reseed again when spring comes to get rid of the patches. These guys are horrible pests.

The grass is bluegrass. You can frost seed the bad areas right before snow cover and get the earliest start next spring. I'll be frost seeding soon if you watch for that video. I have a dead spot shaped like a truss (building a woodshop) and a lot of construction area that I will be seeding. BTW, I caught six moles this year, and that stopped them.

@@PlanetMojo Hi, I ended up catching one mole with the gopherhawk stake of death! It got it in less than 24rs. Placed it right before the mound he made. It was bittersweet, but enough is enough. I overseeded last week with Trugreen's seed. I think it is called Falcon IV coated in blue. None have germinated, but I see them opening. It has been 10 days actually, and here in TN we have had some nights in the low 34 degrees (2 in a row) then it goes up to 60 degrees and next week it will continue to be in the 70s during the day and 50s at night. I am not sure if this seed has any chance of survival and if I should keep up the watering at this point. We will only have less than a week of nice weather and at day number 10 of seeing no germination, daily watering and a couple of freezing nights, I don't know what to do now. I did aerate though, so some seed are sitting in the holes. Is this seed dead? I will look into frost seeding. Any seed that you recommend for tall fescue? I have a feeling that the coated seed may take longer to sprout or I just did this too late in the season. Thanks for your input. Keep up the hunt!

What is your dirt made of warm butter! King Kong himself could not step mine into the ground and set it! Must be nice to have that ground that just moves out of the way for scissors cutting backwards into the lawn.

I don't think I have to much of a grub or mold problem. I have sandhill cranes that are in my yard quite often. Either that or I do and that's why they are there.

Sandhill cranes are awesome! We have a bunch around here as well, none up here on the ridges but lots down down in the hollows. Are you in a pretty wet area? That's were the cranes are around here, and maybe that explains the lack of moles as well?

Any chance you could describe how to (safely) trip the Mole Eliminator if you need to remove it from the ground?

I just yank it out and toss it on the ground. That usually trips it.

Sir: I have several mole tracks that go through my lawn. It is damage from last year. Should I sprinkle soil first before adding seed? The tracks are hard packed and not fluffy like on your video. I am tired of seeing my lawn in such disarray. I want the grass to grow back but nothing happens in these old mole tracks. Thoughts?

I just step them back down and drop seed along them. The tunnels shouldn't be hollowed-out, but if they are you an add a bit of topsoil. If its hot and dry, you will need to water.

It should only take a day or two if you're on the right tunnel. We've already had them catch a mole within a minute of setting - as I was walking away!

If you're somewhere that you have moles, you have other wildlife as well. Pitch them into/under a bush or into the woods, the scavengers will take care of it. I have an old stump that I put dead pests on and between the fox, coyote, raccoon, bear, crows, ravens, vultures... it's amazing how often it's gone by the next morning.

Will this work on voles?

Gopher traps don't work on moles. The Wire Tek traps here are the only one's I've gotten to work, and they work very well.

how do you get rid of the human scent on your traps? Moles will avoid human scent

The only time the mole is near the trap is after it has closed on him. No problems whatsoever with scent.

I wish your camera had really shown the process of getting the dead mole out of the trap. The directions that came in the box aren't clear so I was hoping for this video to show how. Unfortunately it was just out of view. The rest was informative however.

KZread is kind of fussy about that kind of stuff, but what you do is place the tip of the scissor jaw (the one without a mole in it) on a hard surface, then push down like you're setting the trap until the jaws open a bit and the mole falls out. Good luck!

The coyotes generally eat it, but the eagles will as well if it were left alongside the road. The vultures would get it there as well.

Commerce Companies who sell these products wouldn’t make any dough if there was something that would prevent any varmints or moles from getting in the yard.

I agree. On a bad year, they can ruin an entire lawn. Pro tip: If you use grub control granules, the moles will go away for the most part. they are after grubs and worms.

They absolutely are! Not something you want around your pets!

Here in germany our moles digg dunnels way deeper. Like 20cm deep or more, so that I don't know how I can catch those moles with this trap.

I use the poison cone things pretty successfully. The thing is that it is not an immediate result, but within a month, there will be no moles. I have 3 different kinds of traps (the scissors one like you have, a spike guillotine, and a snare type that more or less work ... I think because I have very sandy soil they tend to spring without catching anything. I would guess I catch 1 every 5-6 or more tries over the course of a couple of weeks. The other thing is that sometimes it looks like you might have a dozen moles with all the tunnels (I rarely get the mounds) but you'll catch 1, and the activity stops HAHA. I read somewhere that a moles needs a half to a whole acre - I don't know it that is accurate or not though. The last thing is that I've noticed that if you plant something, pull weeds, or otherwise disturb the soil, a mole will be there shortly. Maybe it's because the soil is easy to dig through? Hi Bill! I've found that I'll catch five or six in an area like one of the yards, then the tunneling will stop - the most I have caught in a year was about a dozen, but we have a very long, yard, about 800 feet. We get a lot of tunnels on our woods roads as well, but just let them be. No matter what, they always seem to come back to the same areas, so trapping them these days is pretty routine 😊

@@PlanetMojo I agree that the same area gets activity whereas other areas get no activity. My guess is that the trails follow the food. Another thing I forgot to mention is that the moles will spread out far an wide (I have a 3 acre rectangle) but as soon as the weather starts to get cold, they will migrate towards the house. This is the time I am the most successful at getting one. I don't envy you if you get a dozen moles a year! I might get 3 in a year but usually it's 2. But like you, I don't bother when they are out in the woods, and maybe some stay there all winter - who knows.

​@@billsmith8339 We have had very little mole action this year - possibly because of the dry soil, but maybe because we removed out vineyard. They eat grubs and worms, and the vineyard attracted Japanese beetles that lay their eggs in short grass. Grub killer will reduce mole action as well by getting rid of the grubs. We used it years ago during a particularly bad infestation.

Wonder why so many moles?

What if my mole tunnels deeper, i only see holes, but not tunnel trails? So my step on trap isn’t trigerring..

I bought the Easy Mole Trap from Oak Hill. It was hard to set but I caught a mole pretty quickly. After that it became harder and harder to set. I never caught another mole probably because the trigger may be too hard to trip. I tried loosening the bolts, oiling the moving parts, etc. At this point the trap will not set at all. It just keeps popping up without locking down. I’m hoping this Eliminator will work better. The design is virtually the same. Has anyone else had this problem of trouble setting the trap?

None of the look-alike traps work well at all. I've been using the same EasySet traps for eight years now and they still work flawlessly. A drop of oil now and again when they get older will help.

I bought two of these and after six months, one trap finally caught a mole. I have a couple of problems: one problem is that I almost caught my fingers in the trap trying to release the mechanism. What is the proper procedure to release the trap without getting your fingers caught. Also how do I check to see why the other trap does not work. I used a screw driver and placed it under the trigger and pushed up under the trigger, but it does not seem to work.

To release traps I just pull them out of the ground an drop them on the ground. The trips the trap almost every time. I have tested them by setting the trap (not easy to do out of the ground) then tip over and drop something on the trigger. Unless very rusty, it should work. I've caught moles within minutes of setting the trap, but normally it takes a day or-so.

I could not get the mole eliminator fast with given link...but I could with amazon search...sorry.

I have had terrible results with the sizer trap. My moles run deep so the tunnels are not visible from above ground. They have simply dug around the base of the traps. I have been actively trying to trap them with the same trap as you. Very disappointing.

If they run deep enough to not trip the trap, they shouldn't leave any damage on your lawn.

I had good luck with mole bait gummy worms. But followed the directions to the letter.

The moles keep avoiding this trap. What am I doing wrong?

You are likely setting the traps in the wrong place. I will be doing an in-depth video on that as soon as the moles start digging again this year in our neck of the woods.

No. Gophers have deep tunnels and these work on surface tunnels only.

Good video. Can you tell if the trap has caught a mole or do you have to keep pulling the trap out of the ground to check? Also, what if the runs are deeper under the ground than what was in your case?

You can tell when the trap is sprung as it sticks out much further. If the mole is deeper, it will not be ruining your lawn. Any deeper and you would not care if he's there.

You are likely putting them on the wrong tunnels.

@@mayaschapira Those could be ground squirrels, chip monks, or some other burrowing creature. It doesn't sound like moles.

I hadn't seen this type of trap before. I found the knock off at a thrift store. I'll be getting out the welder to beef up the bar style base with some plates and reinforce the trigger. Couldn't pass it up for $4.00.

Good info but longer than necessary.

odd that you would take it to the dump. The instructions are to put them in a hole in the ground. Why don't you just use up the last bit. I know the cone of peanuts doesn't work, I tried them too. I used the same metal traps... caught a couple, cleaned the yard. Next year they were back and the metal traps didn't work as well.

I would rather not put the last of the peanuts in the ground as they don't work. The moles will come back every year - mostly spring and fall -and the traps will work 100% of the time if set in the correct place.

FYI. These are voles. Not moles. A vole is 3-4 times larger than a mole. Treat your yard with grub be gone! Take away their food source, and they go away! Works here in PA

We have voles as well, but these are absolutely moles. Voles get 5- to 8-inches and moles get 4 to 7 inches. No eyes and paddle feet are dead giveaways for a mole, but the two aren't even close to looking alike. Grub control does work, but we have over an acre of yard. Far less expensive to trap the moles than to treat such a large area.

I have tried all of the things you show here & more, none of them have worked. As for the traps the moles come up to them & just go around them.

I set them at my Dad's and caught 2. I set them at my place they go around. Seems like anything I do to catch the moles I have only infuriates them.

these step on traps never work for me. i live on a midwest farm and deal with mole tunnels daily. best way to kill them is to find the fresh tunnels and then smoke them out

Only one that's worked for me. I have a really hard time, though, setting it. I step on that pedal and it doesn't click set and/or I almost fall down trying to keep my balance until it does snap set. Also, dude, can you just get to it instead of taking 10 minutes?

Then you are doing something wrong or have the 'look-alike' traps. It is easy to set the trigger, even in dry, hard soil. Our soil is clay, and gets hard as a rock in the summer, but it's easy to set the traps.

@@PlanetMojo if I'm doing something wrong it's what you edit out on your video. Because I do exactly what you do. You're not going to push anything without a sharp point into my yard. Let alone a couple loop wires, and it's a official Nash chocker trap, not a knock off. I even bought the trap setter pounder. The sand/dirt falls right back Into the groves unless I literally soak the soil first. So far for me the best method is step on the raised trail and wait with a shovel and pop it out of the ground. Live traps? Those are just a race of who can destroy your lawn first. A good ole spade shovel never fails. But I'd prefer the choker trap, if it would go into the ground as advertised. I'd make a bet with you for 100 bucks that you just can't set that down and stepped on it and it goes in my yard like butter.

@@divineknowledge4607 My video is not about a "Nash Choker" trap. It's about the Wire Tek EasySet Mole Eliminator Traps. It does have a sharp point, and it's very easy to push into the ground, and there are no wire loops, it's like a scissors. You are talking about a different trap altogether. The name of the video itself says the name, and i tell you in the video it's the only one that has worked for me - and it works very good. A WireTek trap will step into your yard just fine.

@@PlanetMojo I'll have to try that brand. I have the motomco scissor trap, heavy duty plastic, and it's worthless. Same issue won't split the ground to set. When I engineer it in the ground enough of my sandy dirt slowly falls in and doesn't allow it to snap shut. And it doesn't have a snap I would not want my wrist I'm let alone a finger lol. I'm just so dam frustrated with these moles. I plant grass seed when I kill them and more come and ruin it as soon as it germinates. The professionals tell me lies, like they only live 3 to a fertile acre. I sent them the photos of me killing 47 of them in the exact same spot in my yard! And I only have 1/3 acre and my neighbors have the same problem. I do live near two major well known rivers, I don't know it that makes a difference. I paid 7,500 to have landscaping block ledge's put in and they tunneled so much the end sunk down 9 inches. I literally am to the point of using half sticks of dynamite 😂. Actuati am seriously thinking of removing 4 feet of dirt and having stainless steel mesh laid down and all the way up to a inch about the edges then replace it with black dirt and not the same I have. I'm at my wits end and ANY advise you or anyone that comes along can give me I will try. Even a rain dance while wearing a live chicken as a hat. 😂. Thank you for taking time out of your life to address this. It's a rare trait today from KZread content producers.

@@divineknowledge4607 I have 30 acres, and there are moles on most of it. I generally kill 5 or 6 in the worst area of the lawn, then they stop for the rest of the year. One thing (besides the correct traps) that may help is grub killer. Moles eat worms and grubs. If there are a lot of grubs you get more moles, and the moles are close to the surface because that's where the grubs are. They do a lot more damage close to the surface. Grub killer takes awhile to work, but it will help. Good luck!

I'm of the opinion that moles aren't so bad. Yeah, they tunnel. I say so what? The reason is that moles don't eat your lawn. They're carnivores. What are they eating? They're eating the grubs in your yard. They're doing you a favor. Villainizing moles is misdirected. What you really want to do is get rid of the grubs. Do that and the moles will leave because there's no food. Voles are a different story. They eat vegetation. Stuff that you want left alone.

They cause massive erosion damage when they tunnel on hillsides, and moles carry diseases and parasites that can affect you and your pets as well. If you can live with that, feel free to do so, but I am sure as hell not!

I have both rock and hard clay. If a mole can tunnel through it, the trap will work.
