How to electroplate copper onto objects such as metal & plastic
Ғылым және технология
This is a demonstration video showing how you can use a solution of copper sulphate to electroplate copper onto objects including metals and plastics.
Non-conductive objects, such as plastics are coated with electrically conductive graphite paint to act as a conductive substrate for copper plating.

Thank you, that was a wonderful video and great explanation.. It was simply awesome to get a refresher in electroplating !!!
Thank you for the neat video. Well done.
Nice demonstration. If the Plastic object conducts electricity now, It can be Chrome Plated.. Now, I can make my own fiberglass bumper for an antique car and Chrome it..

You can't (shouldn't) do electro-chroming at home. The liquid required is extremely poisonous. A single drop into the wastewater system, and someone else will have a health problem. See the Pelican case movie; it's based on a true story.
very well done you gave me hope for tomorrow going to try to plate some hematite rocks
Nice! I was wondering if I could make PCBs with graphite and electroplating. Then I thought, "I'll bet someone has already done it." Sure enough. :)

The SAME CASE, man! =D EXACTLY the same case! I've tried to find a way to make a thin copper layer on a totally non-conductive material... To make a raw copper plate to etching a PCB on it. Now, the answer : Carbon can used for electrolising. So, I have to just make a conductive ink, paint a plexi plate and do electrolising.
Awesome video. What about the copper plated golf ball's resistence?
I am using an electro-bath configuration with a 110 AC to 12 DC converter. I test pieces are forming copper crystals. The crystals are nice but I like a coating to match the surface area. Any recommendations.
thanks for the valuable penny, that one.
Watch out for those Killer Ohms lol
Friend could you clarify to me if the painting of graphite sells it or you prepared it
how many layers of graphite paint is needed for the best electroplating?
How can make thicker the electroplating ??just more time??
how do you do the electrically conductive graphite paint?
never heard of graphite paint,,btw is it a bad idea to use an acid in the bath along with the water and copper sulfate?is this what creates those nasty mud burn? i tried different solutions and each time my quarter gets a layer of what looks like black gunky oxide
How thick is the copper layer from the electroplate on plastic
Ive been experimenting. I used a vinegar and 1 small spoon of salt solution and made copper sulphate by putting 2 copper electrodes in solution. I used 12vdc for the sulphate production them switched to a phone charger for plating. Tried plating 2 10 pence coins, a brass .22 casing. It just rubbed off with minimal effort... ugh
How do u make the paint is it graphite powder and acrylic paint water?
I have done that like you but the copper layer after that wheb i scratch it to be soften it is removed why?
GREATEST & BEAUTIFUL ( BUT...DO YOU HAVE " BRASS ELECTRO PLATING & TECHNICALLY HOW TO DO ?? EVEN MIX WITH GOLD ?? & CHEMICAL PRODUCTS; THANKS RALPH 🙏. . .
I want copper attract by rice grains or how copper through iron (anti iron)
Would I need a ridiculous amount of copper to copper plate a motorcycle wheel??
Killer ohms?
Good
I would imagine you could make your own printed circuit board this way.
What if copper oxide is forming on the metal
💯
what graphite paint are you using? i can't seem to find it anywhere

It's possible to make it at home from the carbon cores of ordinary pencils. Just find a suitable solvent, which has a perfect evaporation.

approximately how much time did it take for the copper to plate the golf ball? i have almost the exacts same setup but my power supply is only putting in .01 amps...

+Walter Wessels Thanks for the question; it took about 10 hours to electroplate the golf ball. Initially plating started at a low current ~0.01A but increased after a few hours, once a thin layer of copper formed and the resistance decreased. Try to plate around the connection on the golf ball first to decrease the electrical resistance at this point; you may need to move the sacrificial copper electrode to increase plating at this location.
It was really really weird. I has followed your instruction, from Copper sulfat solution and i used battery 3.3 v for the supply. But the result that i got is not the same like what you did. My cathode ( steel that i want plating) was plated with black gel. Did i Miss something from here?

the conductive paint comes off the object when placed in the solution. how did you get around that?

Lucas Edwards I used a plastic primer spray paint over the whole object before applying the conductive paint. leave the primer to dry for 24 hours though

Have you tried switching the cathode and anode? If they were reversed the solution would eat away at the object instead of depositing material onto it.

May I ask what kind of paint you used? I'm having trouble with it not sticking and flaking off.. at first I thought maybe I was using to high voltage but that doesn't seem to be the case. Thanks!

You may have to use a special primer to get any paint to stick to the type of plastic you're using. If you dig around, there are methods to identify what type of plastic it is, such as whether it floats or how it burns, and then match it with the correct primer. It's more of a paint question than a plating question really, so you'd want to talk to someone who paints cars. If I was to pick a paint, just off the top of my head, I'd try paint intended for plastic models, like Testors brand.
I used a phone charger to convert ac to dc and i made a copper solution with vinager salt and H2O2 and your vid just let me know that thae reason it wont work on my butter knife is because its stainless ;p thought i did something wrong but my solution is green is that a problem??
6 жыл бұрын
Dude, vinegar, salt and hperoxide? the greenness of the solution indicates a high chlorine content
@suckinDiesel44

Sounds like you had polarity around the wrong way and had the stainless as the anode leaching iron into solution turning it green. DOH!

You would have to dissolve it in acid. Vinegar, for example.
Answer: graphene paint + electrolysis.

Hello, I want to know what we get in this experiment: distilled water + sea salt + a AA battery + Copper Plate + Black Copper/heated/nano coated. What do we get accumulating at the bottom of the glass when negative of AA battery is connected to a nano/heated coated copper, and the positive is connected to both a copper coil and Zinc plate. What is the name of this chemical reaction or water or the slim/cloud that gets accumulated at the bottom of the glass? Is the water drinkable? What is GANS and what uses are there for GANS? A physicist from KesheFoundation.org is saying we can drink the water to combat the viruses or any virus / apparently the copper/nano coated copper/Zinc water can interrupt the virus power pack, therefore allowing our body to defeat the virus if we drink 100ml of this water. And spray it on our masks, face, hands and back. Thank you :-)

Don't do that. I was looking at the same idea but the major problem is copper poisoning. Very nasty stuff. And silver is great but be careful when makeing your own colloidal silver as any contamination or wrong particle size can cause permanent blueing of the skin.
