All writers need to read more poetry. Poetry is an underrated and under respected art form that is mandatory for any songwriter.

good stuff. I am just starting to study this..though I'm 'old'...but with renewed interest, and trying to shake off the impression of it being 'too dificult'. One little thing I think he could have added that may be releavant, idk...but... present tense verbs seems to generally be more compelling that past ones...right? Though of course there is need for some past tense (maybe lol)

Not sure I agree with this because nouns are super important, analyze "Nobody Home" by Pink Floyd. This song is as good as anything and the nouns convey the emotion.

😂 damn straight, awesome song. "🎶I got thirteen thousand channels of shit on the You Tubes to choose from🎶" In his defense, the verbs do function to strengthen the imagery of nouns, and that's essentially what he's saying. "🎶And I've got a strong will to fly, but I've got nowhere to fly to, to fly to, to fly to, to fly to, to fly to🎶"

Genius? What are you? His student who needs to kiss his ass to get a good grade cuz you suck at writing poetry and songs? He doesn't know what he's talking about. Poets are born not made and you can't teach it in a class you assholes. You dirty pseudo-scientific fraudulent morons and dirty assholes. He's just analyzing someone else's works because he himself cannot write. If he wrote decent poetry it would be online for everyone to read and compare and say, oh okay this guy not only can write but he can teach. But his poetry is nowhere to be found because he's a fraud. I write better than anything this guy has ever read when I'm half asleep.

I feel like his advice of paying attention to verbs is very useful, but his example wasn't the best, I wish he had used an actual song that people have heard, something that anyone can relate to (first thing that comes to mind that makes his point well is Across the Universe... thoughts meander like a restless wind... words slither wildly as they slip away... inviting and inciting me etc). That's a beautiful poem by Robert Frost but for me there's something sort of obscure and unrelatable to those words being used in song lyrics that wouldn't be as effective. I want to connect with people, not just show them how clever I am.
