How to Educate Your Brain With Alcohol | Sune Urth | TEDxKEA

Your likes and dislikes are often based on a single experience and sticking to those assumptions will hinder your further development. Transferring that philosophy to how we treat alcohol, Sune Urth has developed a theory he calls ”The Tequila Conundrum”. He argues that personal aversions and dislikes are often based solely on irrational fears caused by certain memories. Those memories are connected with certain tastes, causing the mind to bring them back when, for example, drinking tequila.
Daring to confront these preferences helps us evolve our taste perception and opens up a new world of sensory experiences.
Sune Urth is one of Scandinavia’s finest bartenders and alcohol connoisseurs. Urth runs the bar at No. 2, a high-end restaurant in Copenhagen, Denmark. Under the name ”Hr. Urth” (Mr. Urth) he also runs his own distillery, travels Norway to teach the theories behind brewing, and is publishing books such as Cocktails for Home Brewers, which was released last year. What ties these activities together is the most sold but also the most misunderstood alcohol in Denmark: the akvavit.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Nice speech. This is synesthesia taken to another level. Our brain works like that: associating smells, tastes, feels, sounds, etc. And it may be very hard to overcome that "this is the song that reminds me of her", or "the taste that makes me think of this time I passed out drunk", etc. The only way to overcome this is the same as every hurdle in life: time and efforts.

This is a good and funny talk, but I've educated my brain to just leave the stuff well alone now. I had some excellent and fantastic times on the stuff thats for sure and I really liked pub crawls and drinking through the night but unfortunately it really didn't like me. In actual fact, if I hadn't been drinking I would never have met my wife of 27 years. So if you can take it and not lose control too much then well done you are one of the lucky ones. I do feel quite sorry for the ladies because they tend to have much smaller livers and get trollied that much quicker. Perhaps this was my problem, my feminine side was stronger than my male side. So, whatever your poison, if you are going out on the razz take it easy and try to have a meal first. One more tip, to lessen the dreaded hangover try to drink a glass of water (if you can remember) between each alcoholic drink because alcohol dehydrates your brain which is why some get the pain.
