How to Edit Video Using QuickTime Player for Mac
QuickTime Player editing is quick and simple! In this tutorial I show you how to do it using QuickTime Player for macOS Catalina 10.15.2.
Not only can you use QuickTime Player to record video, audio, and your computer screen, you can use it to edit your videos!
You might be thinking: "why would I use QuickTime Player to edit when I have the much-more-capable iMovie or Final Cut Pro X already sitting on my Mac?" QuickTime Player is great for simple editing tasks, where you don't necessarily want to create a whole iMovie, or Final Cut Pro project just to get the job done.

That is the kind of tutorial I could show to my mother without further explanations. In case you wonder: I mean this as a huge compliment!
Your teaching style is truly 'teaching; very detailed and not just telling. This was very helpful!
This video must’ve given me my biggest “NO WAY!” moments in years. Thanks for explaining these features so clearly!
You are the Bob Ross of QuickTime. The only thing missing are "happy little trees." I am a teacher and moving to online instruction. Your videos have helped immensely. Thank you.
Very informative and straight to the point. I'll use this video for reference any time I get stuck while editing a video
Thank you so much for your tutorials. In my opinion, you are the best youtuber regarding this kind of topics. On the other hand, being a non native English speaker, I have to say that the way you speak is awesome. Your vocalization is so good that it is of a great help for non native speakers. Thanks a lot again for you great job. Juan, from Spain.
All Cudos Dude. I've been sitting at my Mac (recovering from surgery) for a month trying to learn how to edit video. I saw some nice folks who were trying to teach this process ~ sadly all they'll ever be able to do is try. I own two nice businesses and I'm certainly not a dummy but I've never felt so dumb trying to follow the instructions I was hearing. Then, last night, I found your tutorials. What a breath of fresh air. Your concise, professional and thoughtful approach is proof that you are top-notch as an educator in this field. I'm as grateful as can be and for what it's worth, I think you're gonna be a star. I've already made two calls to tell friends to watch your videos and subscribe. Thanks Mike.
Mike, I stand with the many you've astounded by taking time to reveal the abilities with what have likely been considered as simple apps. Being a long-time "Mac Man" (dare I claim that), this video pulled me to another video editing (YT) film of yours. From there, another subscription was added to your colony, more word-of-mouth about your videos have been passed on, &, of course, another thumbs up added. The time you've taken to appreciate new & old users of the apps you define is acknowledged, as well as, highly valued.
I know this video is rom 4 years ago, but it is still super helpful! You have a great voice (sorry, but I hope you are a voice actor as well!)! Very clear for a newbie!
This is a tutorial that everyone that wants to learn QT should watch. Your presentation is the best I can imagine. You talk slowly with easy instructions that result with the listener being able to accomplish wonders. I purchased a MacMini M1 which lost Screenflow for a time. But with your instructions I was able to accomplish the same thing in QT, with the advantage of seeing my camera picture while recording, which SF isn't able to do. I then added my intro screen made in Keynote. The only thing I wasn't able to do was to fade out of the black titles and fade into the screen capture. Thank you so much for taking the time to make videos which help so many.
Thank you. This was really good. I particularly like that you are NOT talking too fast. I have lots of Zoom videos to trim.
I only needed a few minutes of this video to learn how to cut out footage from "inside" my video. Excellent explanations! Nice for this old dog to start a workweek by learning a new trick -- thanks Michael!
As someone who has used Final Cut (and occasionally Premier) for over 10 years, I must say this is a fantastic tutorial. I used to use QT7 to do this and always suspected the newer QT player could do all this too, but never dug into it. A great time saving option for quick simple jobs. Thankyou!
Thank you for such a clear, concise QuickTime video editing tutorial. The content, the speed, and the voice over were all spot on!
One of the clearest and easiest video tutorials I've come across. Thank you.
SO COMPREHENSIVE!!!! Thank you!! I'm a knucklehead editor of videos, and you broke this down PERFECTLY!!! I'm so appreciative!

The bit that's incredibly helpful to me begins around 6:24. View-->show clips, Edit-->split clip
What a relief to find you, clear voice, lots of patience, unhurried, precise, a godsend to learn new things. Many thanks.
If there is a better instructor on youtube, I haven't seen 'em. Outstanding video.
You do excellent work. I love that you give 2 ways to do most operations. Your clear and logical instructions stick with me and make my editing easier. Thank you.
Michael, I really appreciate how patient you are with your explanation. Thank you. I'll look for other tutorials you've done.
Thank you so much! Finally, someone on KZread is clear, calm, and a good teacher!!
What a superb video. Well-paced, carefully worded and beautifully illustrated with examples.
I loved the clarity while explaining all basics. The pace of your teaching and voice is truly appreciated!
You are a lifesaver! I was racking my brains over video edits to a clip being added to a Powerpoint deck. I watched some other tutorials, but they only confused me more! I came across yours, and in less than 10 minutes, found the steps I was looking for, and was able to finish my presentation before the end of your video! Thanks for making this so understandable. You're an excellent teacher!
Brilliant. You are an excellent teacher. I’m an editor, but this is so helpful to train other non-creative team members, for when they need a quick fix without needing any pro apps or deep pro skills.
Thank you! Great pace and excellent, easy to follow instructions.
You have set the gold standard for instructional youtube videos. I used to think i was too stupid to learn. Now I know the teachers just were not very good at teaching.
very helpful - i just did it!!! thanks for your generosity.
You ROCK! You saved me I was able to edit one of my lectures for my class for the first time. Your teaching style is amazing, very easy to understand. Bless you!!
Very helpful!! Thanks Michael!
This was great Michael; I never realized how useful an editor QT was! And I've used Macs before most people watching this were born. Also, your demos beat them all b/c you speak slowly and clearly AND you deliver the most vital real life information.

Wow...you're awesome! Thank you. Your instructions were succinct and spot on. I never edited a video in my life, but was able to edit my vid with your instruction! Thank you!
Thank you so much for the tutorial!
THANK YOU, Michael!!! All I wanted to do was trim a couple of clips without updating my operating system, finding and downloading some software that will only be used once, and then perhaps finding out that software wasn't as 'free' as advertised. That saved me a lot of hassle!
Thank you very much indeed Michael for such an informative and very helpful demonstration of how to get started with video editing using QuickTime. Very much appreciated, it has helped me do exactly what I needed to do.
Thanks, Michael, very helpful.
Terrific instructional video in all regards ~ Thanks!
That was amazing thank you. I needed to split rather than trim and this shows how. Your voice is great too.
Thanks so much. Your tutorial is extremely useful for quick trim and clip videos. You are so succinct and how you guide us through the process is super like an awesome teacher. Keep up the great work.
Awesome, useful, terrific. Like all of your videos. Thank you so much.

I've watched 5 videos trying to explain the same thing. Yours was the best. Thanks for saving my a&&. :-)
Thank you! Made things so much easier.
Really appreciate your detailed and articulate explanations. This video is a life saver, since it keeps me from going back into after effects or premiere pro, doing a tiny amount of edits and then having to render once again. Thank you Sir!
Thanks. this helped me a lot.
This was impressive. Well done.
Thank you! You are a very good presenter and you have a great voice.
Fantastic Tutorial. Thanks so much for sharing this
Thank you you’re the best! ❤️
Great explanations!
Wow well done! Great walkthrough, patiently done, and thorough! You are a good teacher :-) I had no idea quicktime player could do this much... Now I don't have to learn new video editing software.
Excellent video! Thank you so much! Saved me from jumping into Adobe Premier for a simple edit!
Thank you so much for this video. I had no idea how to edit a video but now I do thanks to you. Thank you again 🙏
Thank you for this video and your voice is just great!!! 👍👍👍
This helped me so much - thanks!
Superb! Thank you. I cannot imagine how complicated your set-up must have been to be able to record your screen, with voiceover from a composite audio source and background music and ease-in/out effects showing how you do the video editing in Quicktime at the same time as doing the video editing! I'd get terribly confused. You are a genius.
Great video instruction!!!
Very very helpful, detailed explanation and easy to follow. You must be a teacher!..because that is a sign of a very good teacher. Subscribed and liked.
Truly helpful, thank you for your effort in making this tutorial.
Nice Video to quickly learn basics. Thanks :D
This is an amazing video!
