How to Edit Smart Objects in Photoshop

Learn how to edit smart objects in Photoshop! Lesson 2 in my Smart Objects tutorial series.
Two powerful advantages of using smart objects are that we can edit their contents, and we can even replace their contents, and have our changes instantly appear in the document.
Editing the contents of a smart object is great for when you want to keep the same image inside the smart object and just change its appearance. But we can also replace the contents with a completely new image, making smart objects perfect for creating reusable templates!
To help us learn about editing and replacing a smart object's contents, we'll convert an image into a smart object and then place it inside a frame. Once it's in the frame, we'll learn how to edit the image inside the smart object, and then how to replace it with a different image! I'll be using Photoshop CC but everything is fully compatible with Photoshop CS6.

Hi everyone, Steve here. In this second video in my series on working with smart objects in Photoshop, I show you how to edit a smart object and how to easily replace its contents! We start by converting an image into a smart object and placing it inside a frame (0:49). Once the smart object is in the frame, we learn how to edit the contents of the smart object (4:52), and then how to replace the image in the smart object with a new image (10:00). If you're not familiar with smart objects, be sure to check out the previous video in this series ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/h3dlyKptiJiXibw.html ) where I cover what smart objects are and how to create them. Please leave any comments, questions or suggestions below, and thanks for watching!

Nice Tutorial. Everything was not only easy to follow, but clear as well. This also makes the recall easier. The time you take to explain why something is done helps better understand how the function can be applied to other projects.

Honestly, between being able to edit them, scale them, distort and warp them, make copies of them, and apply smart filters to them, I can't imagine working in Photoshop without smart objects. I'm so used to them that I usually convert my layers to smart objects before I even know what I plan on doing with them. :)

Smart objects only work in Photoshop. To convert a smart object back to a normal layer, right-click (Win) / Control-click (Mac) on the smart object in the Layers panel and choose Rasterize Layer.

Make sure the resolution of both images is the same by going up to the Image menu, choosing Image Size, and looking at the Resolution value for each image. Even if the pixel dimensions for both images are the same, they will appear as different sizes if the Resolution values are different. To change the resolution without changing the pixel dimensions of the image, uncheck the Resample option before entering a new Resolution value.
