I’ve been gardening for years with inferior tools. I get so worn out and it takes forever to do my work with these bad tools. I’ve searched all kinds of gardening centers, and every big box store for a better shovel than what I have to no avail. I really just thought no one gave a darn about making quality hand tools. I came across your video and hallelujah😇. Thank you so much for sharing this. I can’t wait to order a good shovel. I am loving how you edged the garden, and I think I will be pulling out my rock edging and doing this instead.

Mike, you are simply the best! I only became aware of your existence, accidentally, about a year ago & your website, videos, emails, etc. are my "go to" for all things garden/landscape, etc. You have become my " right hand man", lol. I am a " visual learner" & though I certainly can read, your videos make interpretation unnecessary. I also appreciate your down-to-earth personality, along with your very extensive knowledge & expertise. FYI, I am a 59 yr old female living in northeastern pa. & share the same conditions as in Ohio. Don't know if anyone ever mentioned this, but, I find the fact that you often mention "how not to do something" during a demonstration makes things "crystal clear". Thank you so very much! Deb J. I'm a novice gardener in the UK and wondered how to keep the edging neat around my lawn. Unfortunately, I can't find anywhere here where I can get the A M Leonard nursery spade. I was going to order it from America, but with customs duty, etc., it would have cost $180. That's going to have to wait a while! I can get a mattock, though, so I'll have to manage with that and my ancient spade for now. Thank you for making such clear videos I feel more confident about trying things out.

Thanks, Mike for a very informative video. I also like very much that you keep things simple and explain them so clearly. After watching this, I ordered a nursery spade from A.M. Leonard for $69.98 including shipping. I saw a favorable comparison between their products and the company you mentioned. My nursery spade arrived in good time, well packaged, and you are right, it is a hefty, professional-quality tool, one which I consider a great investment given the amount of edging I have to do.

From one to another . Mike, perhaps I could rather recommend the half moon lawn edger for novice gardeners as giving a more wished for result. Unpractised hands are just that.Edging the subtropical creeping varieties of lawn, notoriously tough as they are is especially challenging. Water sandy coastal soils well the day before to avoid edges crumbling away. Operating the half moon edger for novices. Two hands grip the top handle, the one foot (towards the ball of the foot) rests on the folded top of the cutting tool. knee ever so slightly bent & flexible The tool itself is kept tilted slightly in the direction you wish to do the edging (to the left for right handed people) while holding it equidistant from the body. Press down with an up and down cutting movement. One slices though the grass, accurately steering in the wished for direction by "steering" with the handle.( It cuts to a depth of about 9cm ). At no stage should the tool be lifted into the air above the lawn as you the loose control over the exact straight or curved line. So doing less follow up work is needed to correct those jutting missed bits. I use a hoe to free the cut pieces by pushing it underneath them (in the flower border while you stand on the lawn) (those petunias) & tossing them clear of the cut lawn edge, to be collected later, Your Pick axe shown is brilliant for heavy soil. and so is the nursery spade unheard of in my country. ZA. I quite agree with you that edges should be clutter free for easy trimming (No logs & stones placed as ornamentation. Tooo much fiddly work. Of course the maintenance crews use the rotary petrol driven blade machine for fast work in large gardens & our recommended tools for smaller jobs Folks. All tools should have the edges kept sharp for easier operation. Greetings from down under.

thanks for the vid! Tip for you, switch to eating grass-fed meats and stop the grains fed crap to help fix your omega3 to 6 balance which is most likely way off. Cut out grains and legumes as well. Start eating lots of vegetables with grass-fed meats, some nuts and seeds, some fruit, carbs from starchy veggies like sweet potatoes, cut back on soda especially if it has high fructose corn syrup. You'll shed lots of that extra fat off and you'll be able to spend more time in the garden!

I would never use a spade with a steel shanked shaft. I witnessed a man who was electrocuted using one. He cut into a buried power cable. The wood shaft is used for a reason, and it prevents direct grounding If you hit a cable. If you need a stronger shaft, get one with a composite shaft. They will not break when prying.

A manual sod puller works much better and will only penetrate a couple inches below the grass and it is curved so you dont have to bend over. S4ep on it with your foot, pull back and it easily pries up the edge without hassle.

Hello it's nice to meet you am Ray from Denver Colorado and you ?
I would never use a spade with a steel shanked shaft. I witnessed a man who was electrocuted using one. He cut into a buried power cable. The wood shaft is used for a reason, and it prevents direct grounding If you hit a cable. If you need a stronger shaft, get one with a composite shaft. They will not break when prying.
What is the good mythical morning episode featuring this?

A manual sod puller works much better and will only penetrate a couple inches below the grass and it is curved so you dont have to bend over. S4ep on it with your foot, pull back and it easily pries up the edge without hassle.
GMM brought me here...

Love ya to death mike, but you need to get up to date with the Echo Bed Redefiner. I would have had that entire bed edged with two passes in the time it took for you to make this video
I'm guessing gmm brought quite some people here
i have an electric one, and when i try edging a bed, its not so smooth. i get these rough edges and looks very ugly :(
I used to look a bit like you. Don't be like me and wait for your heart attack before changing diet/exercise. Please read the China Study and consider a whole plant foods based diet. Watch Forks over Knives and What The Health. I went from 248 lbs to 185 in 2 years and I am still building up and losing fat. Wheeze and the angina are history for me. Thanks for the demonstration... now I can't say I don't know how to edge the gardens :) best wishes.
IF U DON'T USE EDGING HOW DO U PREVENT WEEDS/GRASSS FROM GROWING IN YOUR GARGEN BED, DO U CONSTANTLY HAVE TO WEED YOUR BED?AND HOW DO U PREVENT YOUR MULCH FROM FALLING INTO YOUR LAWN IF IT RAINS REAL HARD,ESPECIALLY IF YOUR BED IS ON A SLANT..IF U DO WANT TO PUT SOME PLASTIC EDGING IN HOW MUCH OF THE EDGING DO U SHOW ABOVE THE SOIL.
use edger from weedeater, put that spade in museum
how do you spell landscaping .. maddick ??? cant find the spelling for that certain type of pick
Did he live to make any videos after this one?
ames clay mattock pick.
Check out his weight in his latest videos.
I personally like using dynamite . Works great for me, ba boom !
GMM!
who likes GMM?
I was concerned that he might have a heart attack as well.
I have no affiliation with the company, other than that I bought the spade from them. Did not even know they existed until -- with some difficulty -- I found them online. Only interest is to save other viewers the time I spent in searching.
Gmm
i am a mythical beast
