had that on my project Volvo v70 too. Its recommended to use a genuine Part as just a slight difference in size can give you trouble adjusting the mirror.

is the image from 'newer' mirrors more curved and magnified than the original?

This is what they call "European style" mirrors. US versions are flat, and don't have this section for blind spot.
What happened to the old mirror? It happened to my 2012 s60 overnight and it looks the same, and I have no clue what it is.

It fell off. The shiny glass part fell off the backing plate.
