How to Easily Transfer iPhone Pictures to External Hard Drive
Learn how to easily and quickly transfer photos from your iPhone to your external hard drive.
This method works even if your iPhone has more memory than your computer, which was the case for me. Also, no software downloads needed to make the transfer.

Glazing is crazy
thanks! Jaylen. appreciated it! for people wants to save time: the actual video starts at 3:10; if your phones on iPhone aren't already synced to the Mac, using "image capture" takes 10 mins to download 5 pictures and importing them to your hard drive. so I recommend the old traditional method, which turned out to the fastest out of all: 1. airdrop to your Mac 2.move to your hard drive; it takes a few seconds
This was incredibly helpful! I had the same issue where I ran out of memory but since my computer's left over memory was MUCH smaller than what I needed, I was stuck. Very easy to follow and explained everything really well. Also loved the little fun facts at the end -- helped me understand it better and feel less hopeless LOL! Thank you!!!!!
Thank you so much! These videos are usually so hard to follow and understand. You were great. I'm subscribing!!

J. You are the man. Seriously, thank you. I truly needed this video. Would have liked a shorter version and maybe finished with: Now that we've backed them up, how do I delete them safely from my phone? Again, thank you!
November 2020 and this is still the best way to import your media from your iPhone. You've helped a lot of people world wide my friend

I've been trying to think of a way to remove photos from iphone and store on external drive. I also wanted to be able to view pictures in Lightroom. This video is the perfect solution. Thank you!
Treating myself to a new phone this Christmas, bought a hard drive just for this occasion but I had no idea how to get my photos on there. This made it super simple, thank you so much!
THANK YOU! 2020 AND THIS STILL WORKS!
Thank you so much Jaylen for posting such a great video. I have thousands and thousands of photos and dont know why I am so intimidated about just transferring them. I have blown out my old Mac in the past because of not transferring the photos to an external hard drive. And it was not fun, and it was not cheap. I use the Image capture to scan documents so I can email I have found it is easier than using the scanner app for our printer but never knew I could use it for moving photos to the external hard drive. The thing I like about this is 1) I can go through photos and not transfer duplicated, 2) they won't duplicate if you dont delete them . What would be great is if you can show how to delete them once your have transferred them. Do you delete from the phone ( I dont even remember how to do this ) or can you delete them direct from image capture ? Thank you again - very helpful video ! One day I will do the same transfer hopefully from the computer.
I had the same issue and was sitting with my iPhone, MacBook, and LaCie determined but lost. Thank you for taking the time to share the info, your time saved me mine. Pardon the non sequitur, but you have an exceptionally placid voice; you'd be great at guided meditation or other calming narratives.
I never leave comments on anything but I just had to let everyone, especially Jaylen James know that THIS VIDEO IS THE GOAT!!!! This is the ONLY thing that worked. After multiple failed attempts (including trying a backup that took overnight (and failed) and My cell phone company not being able to help me because of how many photos I had! Definitely grateful!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
Man I'm speechless!! I've been trying to back all my files for a while. From the bottom of my heart I thank you. Keep up the good work.
you helped me out big time ... nice and easy to follow... got way too many pictures to lose... this saved me some time.
This video was a life saver!!! Thank you!!!!!!! 3 years after you made this video and it is still SO helpful
This was exactly what I was looking for! I've been an apple user (laptop and iPhone) for at least 10 years now and did not know about Image Capture. I was trying to figure out a way to import photos directly from iPhone to external hard drive. A lot of what I was searching either required an app, or had to download photos to computer then to external, and of course if you're a mac user, there's minimal storage so the latter is not the most efficient option.
This video is 5 years old and just saved me!!! I have been searching for ways to get this exact solution to my iPhone photo problems!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! GENIUS.

Thank you so much for this video! I have been trying to figure out how to move my pics to the external drive for a long time now% Since in the past I was using some other way of uploading (a long and confusing process), I hated doing it. Thus, I was always behind and never had enough space on my phone. Now, thanks to you video, I will be able to do it even on a daily basis if I want to. Thank you so much! Your video has been a big help.
Thank you!!! I’m watching your video every time i need to transfer photos since i’m incapable of reminding de process (though its so simple!) but every time i hear your voice, i know my photos are in good hands. Bless you!!!
Thanks so much Jaylen. I had just spent a couple of hours trying to figure this out and its worked a dream. I must say I'm still a bit wary of deleting the pics off my iPhone but I need the space so will put them on another external drive too - just to be safe!!
Thank you SO MUCH for this video, I was getting discouraged thinking from other videos I would have import everything to the computer, but this is such a breeze! Big help man, thank you
Jaylen - thank you for a in-depth tutorial on Image Capture. I had no idea that was available (and I've been a Mac user for years!). Your voice was pleasant to listen to as well. Great video! ps...I use Dropbox and I believe it can be utilized the same way as Google Photos. I'm still able to retrieve the photos once I delete them off from my phone. Just go into the Dropbox app and voila! The images are there.
