    Mr Brian... you have changed my life.... thank you ! I’ve been playing guitar for about 20 years. I have written about 75 songs and played about 500 gigs. I iHome about the circle of fifths a few years ago. I looked at the chart, watched some videos, went to the ice cream stand to eat my feelings away and thinking that I’d never be able to learn any of this. YOU HAVE CHANGED MY LIFE. THANK YOU THANK YOU !!

    Holy crap, Brian! I started playing guitar, by ear, when I was 10. I’ve struggled for years trying to figure out the chord patterns. I’m now 66. This “circle of 5ths” is like someone just turned on the light and unlocked the secrets I’ve been searching for. You’ve inspired me to dust off the ‘ol axe and make my fingers hurt again… and I can’t wait! Thank you sir for keeping this video simple enough for an old dog like me to “get it”.

    Take this to heart - you have just changed my life for the better with this one video. People always say, “if I can just help one person then it was all worth it.” READ THIS: you didn’t just “help one person” with this video. You have literally changed my life and I will forever be grateful for what you’ve done here! I have been playing guitar since I was 16. I’m 44. This is THE MOST IMPORTANT KZread VIDEO I HAVE EVER WATCHED!!!! This is THE MOST IMPORTANT GUITAR LESSON I HAVE EVER HAD!!!! Period. This video is life! So clear, so simple, so plain to understand. You just took boring, sometimes complicated guitar theory - and made it look like a paint-by-numbers coloring book. I’m now a subscriber, and if the rest of your videos are this awesome, I might just buy your guitar course. Anyone can teach guitar. It takes a special talent to teach it in a way that makes it simple and memorable. You, sir, are amazing. Btw, that’s a lot coming from me because I can be a pretty harsh critic. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    Brian, I have been on KZread for 7 years now learning guitar stuff from tons of folks. I have learned a lot but this lesson popped up in my recommendations today. I have seen many other videos on the circle of fifths but none of them made as much sense on how to use it properly in a key as this one did. Your explanation is the magic decoder key I've been looking for for 7 years. I have also seen so many videos of notes in a key up and down the fretboard but none of them made any sense to me until how you explained it here.between the circle learning which key a song is in and how to choose the key notes on the neck, this is now my go-to video as a base for everything. Thanks for turning on the lights for me, all in 1 condensed video. maybe this just makes more sense to me after groveling around in the mud trying to learn stuff for the last 7 years but it certainly is now going to act as a springboard for me to launch into new areas. Thanks very much for doing this the way you did it. It makes more sense to me than so many things I've seen before. I have subscribed and turned on the Bell

    Hey Brian- from the looks of it down below it looks like you helped a lot of people. You deserve the praise buddy, well done. What’s funny for me, is with your videos, even if I already know all the material that’s going to be covered, I always watch them any way because you always throw something in there that is just a gem. The way you do this is I think your videos strike a balance between beginner and advanced, and somehow do that at a great speed and also clarity. For me in this video, even though I already use parallel minor and secondary dominants, I never saw them so simple on the circle of 5ths. It’s right there. Jeez. Guitar is the best because something so obvious can elude you forever. Thanks for that one. I think an example of how broad your audience is when you speak is that you briefly talked about that, but then gave people something to walk away with, ‘hey, most people use the majors of these parallels, and a lot of time 3rd chord’s goin major and 4th chord is goin minor.’ Like, they can immediately apply it. Don’t ever stop making videos man, yer just naturally fantastic. Ya got the swag, permanently lol. Cheers bro, thanks for all the wisdom.

    Bruh. How did I NOT come across you in all the stuff I have researched on YT to actually get HOW to use the theory and the circle of 5ths. How you broke down each part and dove deeper in the mechanics of it all is so much more understandable then rambling numbers, positions and intervals like everyone else does. I think I may have to go test this out on a new song as well as go back to older stuff and see how far off I was in what I tried.

    no one can actually teach you guitar though... they will suggest stuff and tell you stuff but to be a guitarist there's no payment plan, easy fix, trapper keeper magick... you simply have to put the guitar in your hands and push those strings onto the fretboard and strum... keep doing that until you like what you hear. you're going to have to do this procedure every day for months to build grey matter in your brain. After a good 3 months of this painful and boring process you will be ready to actually attempt to learn actual songs. Sometimes you're going to feel like it's too difficult... how can someone put this finger there then there then back in seconds when you can't even get 1 finger in one spot without touching the other string... you'll probably get so pissed off and annoyed you'd rather just give up... put the guitar in the closet and not even think about it for awhile. And that's a good feeling because that means you can actually improve something in your life and that right there is your goal... YOUR OWN MIND. Prove to yourself that you can do it no matter what... and keep at it... take a small break, get away from it ... then before bed put in another 15 minutes to get just a few steps down before putting it up 'til morning. then when you wake up put a small 5 - 10 minutes to REMIND your muscle memory... then set it down again and forget about it. pick it up again after a few hours. This is the process of building grey matter in your brain... habitual actions. Once you can do it without thinking... you've pretty much IMPROVED YOU... your mind, body, confidence... everything really. You actually can admit to yourself truthfully that you were successful at something. And that's the no.1 reason why most people still pick up a guitar when there's no real reason. GOOD LUCK

    I always said it, learn songs by ear sure it takes longer but in tje process it definitely makes you see notes and frets in a different way, delve into the time signature of those difficult offbeat songs instead of by harding it then you can really make your own unique piece.

  • @wienerwoods
    @wienerwoods4 жыл бұрын

    To figure out the key even more quickly by ear, listen for the root note. I'll usually just slide my finger along either the high or low e string, and pluck it in time until something sounds good for an entire bar. That's the root, because the root will sound good (in harmony) as a droned note it these styles of music. Jazz is a different story however. In modern jazz you generally AVOID playing the root to build and maintain tension, and jazz compositions tend to move through several keys. At that point you need to to know the chords and their related scales by ear, which takes years and a lot of work to master. The other thing is that some keys like E, D,C, and A are more common than say F-sharp or b-flat or whatever in rock / popular music, so start by trying those notes/keys first. After that, it's pretty easy to find a power chord (2 notes) that will fit the root, and from there, it's usually some variation of a 1-4-5 progression in rock and pop. ...and yea, I'm considering tattooing the circle of 5ths on the inside of my left forearm lol.....
