Be careful with this method: some caustics can create an instant and dramatic vacuum when exposed to CO2. I'd recommend using compressed air instead, or like we do; disassemble and run individual parts in a sonic cleaner

Cleaning is always a big chore. Thanks for making videos that make things a little bit easier. Cheers!

From what I understand, CO2 will neutralize the caustic that you are using to clean the stone. Obviously it is working here, but using a pump or compressed air instead of CO2 to push the caustic through the stone seems like it would be even more effective.

You're correct Josh, cheaper an more effective to use compressed air.

Hi Thanks for the reply, Because the Caustic is hot, the CO2 will not dissolve into the caustic solution, the main thinking behind using the CO2 is to make sure that C02 is trapped in the pours after cleaning. I may be taking it too far using Co2 and not compressed air. The method is working well with our 0.5micro ceramic stones and regular stainless steel too.

I find it easier to just put the airstone in a bucket of cleaner, then connect the CO2 fitting end of the carb stone to CO2 or air and let it run for 10 seconds, then let it sit for a few minutes in the cleaner, then push CO2/air through again, and repeat until it is super clean and fine bubbles come out the entire stone.

Hi, Is there any reason you wouldn't just put the submerge the carb stone in Casutic and circulate through it, then at the sterilisation stage, push it through with CO2?

you typically dont want to circulate through as youll be pushing your dislodged contaminants back through the stone... I recommend Running hot water one pass THROUGH the stone to a drain, then doing your bath. We actually use an ultrasonic bath from amazon and use caustic, hot water rinse, acid, hot water rinse and then good to go for brew day (do a paa/starsan bath in bucket as we are about to fill and then install)

hello how are you, greetings from Ecuador At what temperature do you have the caustic soda that you are going to send through the interior of the carbonation stone? Is it advisable to clean each time the carbonation stone is used?

Hi Roy, this water came from the hot Liquor tank, around 65C. make sure you wear protection eh, Cleaning stones each carbonation is really important, you want all the pores in the stone open so you can make lots of small bubbles. i'll put another video below for you to watch.

Caustic and CO2 make sodium carbonate. Better using air
