How to drive in Ireland?

Driving in Ireland first time:
Here are some important rules about driving on Irish roads. These should help you understand how to drive in Ireland. Remember the vulnerable users, bus lanes, traffic signals and road signs.
Vulnerable road users - Pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists are the most vulnerable users of roads so you give them respect and space and let them pass almost always.
Honking- Don’t go honking in the city unless you really want to grab someone’s attention, it’s not a socially accepted thing and you will get weird looks if you honk.
Overtaking - Don’t bother about overtaking while driving within the city. Stick to your lane and follow the traffic in front of you patiently.
Bus Lanes - You are not allowed to use the bus lane in general; however, cyclists and taxis can use it.
Right of way - Traffic coming from the right-hand side always has the right of the way, so at junctions, crossroads and roundabouts remember that you must give way to the traffic coming in from your right side.
Whenever you see the yield sign you must wait and let the traffic coming in pass.
Roundabout - Traffic always flows in a clockwise direction at roundabouts, there is an island at the centre and traffic moves around it. While entering a roundabout ensure that you give way to traffic coming from the right first and remember you must follow the lane discipline on a roundabout. Here’s an example of how traffic moves around roundabouts, wait for the vehicle coming from the right, enter the roundabout, stick to your lane, indicate and leave the roundabout.
Speed limits - Always follow the speed limits, there are speed cameras installed on all major roads. The speed limit is 50 kmph on urban roads. 80 on single open roads, 100 on National roads and 120 on motorways. However, in most residential areas its only 30kmph so drive slow, its very possible children, joggers and cyclists may come in your way.
Seatbelts - Every passenger in the car must wear a seat belt, not wearing a seatbelt may result in a fine for the passenger not wearing one.
Drink & Drive - Drink driving is a very serious offence in Ireland. The legal limit for professional and learner drivers is 20 milligrammes of alcohol per 100ml of blood.
Cell phones - It is illegal to hold a mobile phone while driving.
Animals - Always keep eyes out for animals on country roads especially sheeps. However, sometimes you may come across deers running on the roads.
Emergency - Dial 112 or 999 for emergencies on the road.

Have a trip planned for March 2022 and this was very helpful. The roundabouts here in America confuse me so I'll be very confused with them in Ireland!

What is the difference from England speed limit to Irish ones? If they drive in km

  • @johnpower9652

    @johnpower9652

1 mile = 1.6km. The easiest way to convert KM to miles is to take the 0 off and multiply by 6. For example, speed limit is 50km/h…….5x6 = 30 mph
