How to drink whisky: 101 GUIDE
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This video is about how to drink and smell whisky. And the difference between enjoyment and the appreciation of whisky and how that's reflected in different glass types like the tumbler and Glencairn.
Hopefully, this helps you learn the best glasses for whiskey, when to have it whisky neat, on the rocks or with water. Let me know what other topics you want me to cover!

Definitely. It’s so easy to forget how far we have come on our whisky journey
Laphroaig was also the whisky that first truly got me hooked. I now use it as a gateway whisky to get others on board and to shatter their preconceptions of what whisky is about. I once ordered a round of drams of Laphroaig at a pub for my friends during a birthday celebration. These were not whisky drinkers, so only a few obliged. One of them, upon taking a taste, paused and then proceeded to go through an array of silent facial gesticulations for the next several minutes as his palette digested this new onslaught of flavors and sensations. Later in the evening he approached me with gleeful bewilderment and declared, "I can STILL taste it!"
A couple of fun facts about the Glencairn glass that I discovered. When knocked over, it can still hold about 1.5 fl oz of liquid in it. Now the process of knocking over will probably spill some of the contents, but for me, most of my whiskey remained in the glass! Also, I knocked one over from counter height onto a ceramic tile floor. Amazingly, it bounced 3x before shattering. So close to surviving!
After watching your videos I feel like having one!! Good job mate :D
How to drink whisky? However you like lol! From whatever glass is available ... great content so far🥃 For us ... usually neat if a single malt or blended malt usually in a glencairn, occasionally with a drop of water. Blends in a tall glass over ice, lime and ginger ale.
I am an airline pilot, and I have brought back several Japanese whiskys recently. I am really enjoying them. They tend to be a bit more subtle.
Glad you're back to posting! Can't wait to see more

Ah so exciting. You have so much to try. I recommend a lagavulin 16 if you can. It’s an amazing smoky whisky, but also at the same time not too smoky. Even if you could just try a dram at a bar to see if you like it.

Love your channel. My 'first love' was Laphraoig - the smoke and the sweetness oh my. But Ardbeg is my muse!! Have been going around on this peat carousel for a while now but always return to Ardbeg.
I love your videos because I’m a total newbie to whisky. I love how you said at the end to share your knowledge gracefully as there is so much different ways to enjoy whisky. Thank you!

Hi Phil, I am absolutely very impressed as to your knowleged but also your understanding of how people have different levels and approaches to drinking whisky. I have been working as a specialist with over 500 whiskies for the last 4 years and I think your explanations are wonderful. I have so much I'd love to discuss with you, from chilling your whisky can take away up to 60% of the aromatics to if you exacerbate any spirit (as you would with wine) it forces pure ethanol into the top of a tasting glass and then that's all you're nose is going to suffer through.

Same experience, drank different whiskeys and didn't like them, just burned. But then a friend gave me heavily peated one and I was like hey...this is good! I do dabble in different types but I do tend to focus on peated stuff.

Great to hear you had a similar experience!
I'm 53 and rather new to enjoying whiskey. I've been a beer "snob" and home brewer for decades but even though I wanted to enjoy whiskey I just couldn't get into it if it wasn't mixed into a cocktail. I also had trouble getting used to the high ethanol kick. It wasn't till I bought Ardbeg 10 that I started to enjoy it straight. That let me start getting used to the higher ethanol and enjoying other styles as well, like the bottle of Monkey Shoulder I just finished. So if someone is not getting into the milder "entry level" whiskeys let them try something stronger to see if that's what they connect with.
Great video, I love whiskey and I learned a lot with this video.

Yeah, it’s not essential, but it can help with discerning different flavours if your really trying to analyse your whisky. 🥃
at 3:58 I heard the whiskey scream! It cried at 4:15, and then it was murdered at 4:17. All told just kidding, enjoying the content!
Love that Godzilla Hokusai mug, even if it is inappropriate for the video!
Just to say that if anyone wants an 'appreciation' glass but also likes cut crystal, Glencairn make a cut-crystal version of their classic glass, with the same internal dimensions; thus combining the feel of a top-end glass with the functionality of the standard Glencairn (which is easily the finest whisky glass in existence).
What you call a "Whiskey Lime" is what I've always called a "Whiskey Ginger". I've never heard it called a whiskey lime before, must be an kiwi thing. It's my go-to for an easy drink when a bar doesn't have anything interesting to taste. I usually ask for either Jamison or Knob Creek in it depending on whether I want something drier or sweeter respectively.
Come day go day wishing me heart it was Sunday Drinking buttermilk all the week whiskey on a Sunday
Yessss, u're doing correct... start with basics like these videos...!!!

The glencairn is probably the golden standard for whisky drinking glass, but do you think a replicate or imitation product of the Glencairn glass (with no brand of course) works the same ? Just thinking I might be buying cheaper product to share with my friends
“Share gracefully” ... I love that. I’m not a fan of people who come across as know-it-alls.

Yeah it’s such a big part of it. We don’t want to put others off whisky who are just starting out.
I use Glencairn glass, but instead of adding water, I prefer one small or medium sized (depends on the strength) ice cube. Ice first, whisky on top, give a little stir, wait for couple of minutes for the magic to happen, enjoy!

I'll attempt to gracefully mention that avoiding warming the whisky with your hands is an exceptionally minor detail that no one really need worry about. Not too sure that was graceful. I'd also suggest that you try the whisky without water first and then add your water so you can see how it changes. But do it with all the grace you can muster.

Auchentoshen 12 or Jura 10 are both really smooth. They are both really approachable and were favourites of mine when I was first buying whisky.
