amazing how efficient this suit was for it's era. Still useful for today as long as its well kept...

These old dive suits both fascinate and unnerve me. When I was about 5 years old my family and I vacationed at the beach and while we were there my grandmother insisted we eat at this particular seafood restaurant as we walk in I see a dive suite display my grandmother my mom and my aunt wanted a picture of me with it and promise me we can ice cream if Im good and patient. as I nervously stand next to this thing my mom tells me “don’t be scared its only clothes stuffed with paper ” well at that moment my young imagination come to the conclusion that dive suits were some automata given life by satanic magic because whatever hinges held it in place began to creak loudly needless to say ran to my mom crying“I don’t want ice cream anymore!” It’s funny looking back but to this day seeing a dive suite gives me a brief feeling of paranoia

I imagine that Lovecraft could have woven a fine tale around your experience . As I stood in front of the antiquated equipment a figure seemed to ooze from the open face piece . Tentacles reached out and I was seized with an overwhelming sense of foreboding . At that precise moment I was overcome and swooned and this thankfully preserved me from a fate of unimaginable proportions . Later I was informed by a stalwart member of the local constabulary that had I not become insensible that the diabolical creature from an antediluvian era would most likely have made off with me and devoured me at its leisure . 😱

The Navy’divingdress’ is very buoyant when is filled with air. Lead belt and shoes can render neutral buoyancy unless most air is removed. Air for breathing by the ‘hard hat diver’ is in his helmet

This was so interesting. The book Manhattan Beach by Jennifer Egan led me here. Looks really hard to get used to but I bet it's worth it when you get underwater.

By looking at this outfit and the dressing of the diver is more complicated than the Siebe gorman suit ( I dove many years in that suit ) In the royal dutch navy and salvages company"s It was much easier to dress and work with (1960 to 1970) To a depth of 50 meters (deeper than that with helium mixture).

Brings back fond memories of my early days diving salvage with my father. You missed out quite a few 'tricks' but I guess the video can only be so long. We wore thick woollens under the suit to help maintain body temperature as the water would leech all our warmth. The air supply pumps were still manual hand pumps, 1 pump per diver, 4 men per pump. To call us up for lunch the hot aromatic food was held near the air intake, the food smell would have us at the surface in no time. Similarly, the men turning the pump handles were rotated regularly as their sweaty B.O. would also be pumped down to us. I hope you were briefed never to bend over as your suit was not laced to your body, but you were not deep enough for it to be life-threatening. Your air exhaust is at the top so if you bend over your exhaust moves to the bottom and your suit inflates and you surface fast, feet first. Lethal if you are at depth. Always check your suit for residents before you get dressed, nothing worse than having a cockroach or mouse appear in your helmet when you are under. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Incredible. My father trained in these when he went to commercial diving in Camden NJ back in the late 70's. I dont think it's what he used on his deep dives for the oil rigs though.

At the start of oilfield diving in the 1960s, the divers did use heavy gear / standard dress such as this, but that only lasted for a few years before the lightweight helmets began appearing on the scene.

Im not an expert, I took an advanced open water diving course where we had fairly extensive decompression times, but nothing mixed gas or requiring a decompression chamber. Half an hour at 120 ft., I don't have my residual nitrogen chart but it was a pretty intense ascent for a guy like me. My initial checkout dive (PDIC) was in a quarry with water temps at 29 F in a old wet suit. I remember I couldn't press the button on my BC so I had to bang it on my shoulder to ascend. Anyway, I believe my father used a dry suit with a Mark V helmet. He did a lot of saturation dives as an underwater welder.

Is there a way to attach a couple of oxygen tanks to the back somehow? Maybe a model to the breast plate's back? It would be better for lone divers going to small rivers and can go farther than with a hose

On the surface, it's very heavy...especially the hat and weight belt. But underwater the air in the suit makes it light, and by adjusting the amount of air the diver can make it negatively, positively, or neutrally buoyant.

As I remember, the air hat rig was 196 lb. and the HeO2 hat rig was 296 lb. We had to be in decent shape, so the air hat didn't feel bad. The HeO2 rig, with its 35-lb. boots, required concentration.

For traditional purposes, yes, but not for much else. There are a lot of modern options available through companies like Kirby Morgan (the KM-37 is used heavily in the US Army) and normal SCUBA.
