How to Draw NEW YORK the MARVEL WAY ! Old School

No artist more New York than John Romita Junior, but David Mazzucchelli and Rick Leonardi comes close. And detail king McFarlane is never far away of course.
Let’s do a deep dive into what makes New York such a comic book town, the skyscrapers, brown stones and water towers amongst other things. And surprisingly straight forward to draw in Photoshop.
Let’s give it a go!

I like all the different techniques, comic artists uses to draw cities and backgrounds. I like the Silhouettes and less details buildings tricks for the background. That way, you keep the focus in the character, I think.

Yes, true. I remember this study they did and they saw that people read comics super fast. Basically read the balloons and watch the art in a micro sec.. lol so the clearer the better right.

Late to the party on this one. My intro to comics was JR Jr on DD and Todd on ASM so lots of NY skyline shots. I loved those water tower images. You did a great job here.

Great job picking movie and tv references (even if Rocky is in Philadelphia, Blue Brothers is in Chicago, Streets of Fire is on a movie lot, etc.). Really useful analysis!

I started just copying Marvel comics. And I had that How to draw Comics the Marvel Way book. Then later looking at real life and movies. Martial Arts movies mostly. You can see every muscle a human has on Bruce Lee, lol.
