Looks like Joe Mad was inspired by Manga effects. Cool stuff.

Fantastic study on fire and water and wind. The breakdown was nice to see. I also like how you reminded artist to include shadows and holes in the fire for more depth. Great video as always!

Big thanks to KZread for not telling me this video was posted until almost a week later, good job there YT. A lot of the same principles JoeMad uses to draw fire can also be applied to magic energy. I try to do that in my art but also with magic I like adding some good old fashioned Kirby Crackle (which can use the same techniques he uses for bubbles). Although, it's easy to go overboard and put *too much* detail on things like magic energy and it ends up drawing focus away from what you may want the viewer's attention on, like a character's face or other body language. He definitely has a manga influence on his effects drawings, he's so good at it it's almost unfair.

And speaking about outlines pancake that is why his drawings seems to be a little bit flat, he draws first the outline and then he renders the inside, like the fire, he truly is a master of the silhouette, as a result once the silhouette is there nothing that will compromise the shape will be draw, and that includes the pectorals. He is like putting inside the shape the muscles as he can but never compromising the shape

You're absolutely right - his silhouettes are amazing! I think I tried to convey that in his figures video, but I'm not sure I explained it so indepth. But you are right, his silhouettes and outlines are king. 😁

Ohh pancake I feel like having an affair with Jim lee. I just love the old X-Men rendering, and at the same time I have worked very hard to understand the gesture lines of Joe mad and his rendering Which I also love. Have you ever felt like that before with different styles?

Hello, sorry Carlton yes! At 7:38 we can see I've drawn squiggly lines on the fire. These are long lines of beauty, which are basically S shapes with a smaller and bigger curve (they can also be more than 2 curves as we see here). What makes Joe's, Joe's, is that the space between the two curves are almost straight. :)

I had to re watch the video again, now with pen and paper, I love how you approached the challenge of explaining the goo, not only just tracing over the picture, I also agree that for the fire he draws the outline first and then he draws inside, he has a very hard affection to an specific bone shape, like an M and he uses that one for effects and clothes and fingers and the hair, and the list goes on and on, and I get it, it offers volume, I believe that the simple the better, that is why I love David finch but I am too lazy to create that much details in my own drawings 😅
