How to draw - geometry - full tutorial - basic construction of an extended 12-fold rosette

Here's a step-by-step guide to creating a 12-fold rosette pattern based on a hexagon grid that includes some extended design elements beyond the rosette itself. I learnt this from Eric Broug's wonderful book, 'Islamic Geometric Design' - it's a wealth of knowledge for anyone interested in Islamic art and is something I refer to very often when working in this form.
Check out my other tutorial here for how I add detail and ornamentation to this.
READING LIST: I can't emphasise enough how rich in information the below resources are - they're all available to buy online from good book sellers:
'Islamic Geometric Design'
Eric Broug
'Islamic Design: A Genius for Geometry'
Daud Sutton
'Arabic Geometrical Pattern & Design'
J. Bourgoin
'Islamic Designs'
Eva Wilson
'Ruler and Compass: Practical Geometric Constructions'

The first lighter outline with all the lines isn't the problem for me. If I focus on the shapes of the stars pn the inner ring it gave me a point of reference. If I was ever going over those star shapes I was doing it wrong. As soon as I realized that the stars are what mattered it made everything fall into place for me. Beautiful design!!!

Hey man, do you have any idea of how to generalize this procedure to n-sided shapes? I have failed 24- , 15-, and 30-fold rosettes but I have managed a crude 10-fold one. Do you think on the "nested squares" step, I should keep at squares/pentagons or use higher-order shapes?

Step number 5 is very clear, except you never tell us how long the line should be and the the cm to set the compass on to make the circle ... I don't see how this is a tutorial ...

It doesn't matter. In fact, I encourage you to try this using different dimensions for the initial circle. The horizontal line simply needs to be longer than the diameter of the circle you choose.
