    I have to say: even if you have a hard time drawing Afros (hell even I do sometimes with extremely kinky hair) you can draw box braids, cornrows, dreads, etc. it’s an accurate representation of how we wear our protective hairstyles. So there still isn’t an excuse for making us 1. Bald and 2. Nappy headed

    I don’t see how people manage to draw nappy hair. It’s easier to draw actually hair than doing that.

    I think people forgot hair is a whole other spectrum. Now every black person has hair the way you’re labeling it to be. Some have loose curls other don’t. In some cases there are black people with just straight hair, believe it or not.

    She means generally, black people (women in particular since men normally have shorter hair though this isn't always the case) have naturally very thick and curly hair. This isn't saying they can't have any other style of hair, but it's more common that a black person has that kind of hair. It is even occasionally called "black hair" because of the fact that it's most common in black people. It's just like how white people generally don't have very thick and curly hair, instead most white people have naturally thinner and straight hair.

    I'm white and I'm so glad this video exists tbh. The only videos I've seen like this before have been by other white people and it's kinda hard to know if the people who made those videos are really all that informed, yknow? Maybe they are but it's nice to hear from an artist who actually identifies as black (god, I feel really weird pigeonholing you like that aagh I hope that made sense). This topic is important to me because drawing everyone looking the same is boring AF and I want my characters and stories to be relatable and appealing to people of all different backgrounds; and I really don't want to create something that could be hurtful due to not being informed enough of what to avoid. So yeh. Thank you so much! Subbed. :)

    14:28 !!! Please remember this! Dudes don't only have short hair either :). I drew a portrait of prince for my mom, and over the years/ different shows/ albums he has so many different textures of hair! Remember to start practicing drawing diversely by drawing likenesses. That's personally how I learned to draw more realistically (drew a self portrait in class). This video is great 👍 thank you for uploading!

    Thank you so much for making a video of this! I saw the original comic on Tumblr but it's good to have clarification on certain points, especially the lips! I agree that full lips are beautiful, in fact one of my main OCs has that feature. I always try to be respectful when drawing them but sometimes get worried, especially since I have a very simple, cartoony style (I don't even draw most of my characters with noses ^^; I'm hoping to fix that at some point) but still it's not hard to tell the difference between lovely lips and a caricature. So yeah, that was reassuring so thank you!

    I would like to ask though - and sorry this comment is already so long - for someone who has a very simple style what would you recommend for drawing hair? I was already thinking the hair I normally draw them in should be a wig (it's long, straight and blue, I think it's safe to assume that's not their natural hair LOL) but what advice would you have for stylizing the hair underneath, like what's the difference between simplicity and laziness in this case?

    Now at 5:37 the subject you were talking about... I'm actually really happy you brought this up. I don't intentionally white wash characters but I have an issue with drawing a wide variety of features so very rarely are my faces noticeably diverse. I'm trying to get away from that an learn how to draw faces that would actually exist on real live people. My best friend in doing that has been googling people of whatever race, ethnicity, and nationality I'm making or basing a character off of.

    You make a lot of good points in this video, but there are still factors that go into it besides the general rules, like how simple your art style is, mixed races, and just having overall variety. Also i understand what you said in the beginning about the dehumanization of black people in drawings, but caricatures are supposed to exaggerate features in a silly way, so it should be fine as long as it's done respectively and not taking too far (Of course, the examples used at the start of the video are not okay).

    This is a blessing of a video. My muse is a black woman and, along with being a white lover of black art and culture, I want to create/depict characters of African descent tastefully because I understand the detriment of constant dehumanization. My first attempt, the one I did following this video, is kind of rough. I went too wide on the nose. I'll get more realistic with it next time, though.

    Hmm.. I admire this video for encouraging artists to explore exaggerating features other than the lips and hair of a black character. I think more artists need to discover that you can emphasize more than one thing in certain races. Although I don't agree with limiting people to not portraying certain features unrealistically. As long as it's not meant to hate on a race, I think artists should be free to exaggerate and draw in whatever style they want. I think it's okay as long as it's not their default characteristic.

    Great video. You seem very sweet. My biggest tip when someone is new to drawing something is look at a reference image. I never drew a realistic black person at one point, I always drew them anime style or cartoon style, then when I finally wanted to do a portrait of my friend, I looked at him, I looked at his pictures, I looked at how his hair comes out of his scalp,I looked at each individual strand of hair and how his skin looks in different lights, the portrait ended up looking exactly spot on like him. References really really help when it comes to anything.

    I should probably stress here that while most of the points is true. In terms of character design if there is an intent (key word intent) to draw hair a certain way then its ok so long as it fits that character in its setting and story. I don't want people who are actually learning to feel they are limited to drawing one kind of style simply because our hair grows out differently. If you want to draw a black women with straightened condition hair its ok, but make sure it fits the character, timeline, and personality. Make sure it also tells a story.

    Lewis Smith I've found that a lot of the time our white characters are actually whiter than is a natural skin tone. If we look up photo refs and pic colour from then to practice colouring our characters with, I think that'll help. Colour is relative so as long as your black characters look black and your white characters look white next to each other, and so long as there is diversity of skin tones within raves, I think we'll be arrite. Right? I think we just need to study the colours in photos etc.

It still will be anime-like since thats my natural form of artstyle and in this comic the people there will have unnatural colors as thats what anime has usually (an unnatural eye color paired with a random hair color). I was wondering if it would be okay to have my poc oc to have red hair? (The rest of the world also has unnatural hair and eye colors)

    This video is pretty insightful I just have one problem though - I don't really draw lips on any of my characters (I do when drawing certain expressions I guess? but that's just the lower lip) so I don't know whether or not I should draw my black characters with lips because I definitely don't want to draw something that looks like a caricature but I do want to be at least somewhat accurate. I would definitely appreciate tips from anyone

    @That One Thank you for replying. I do know how to draw lips, I just don't feel like it fits well with the rest of my art style. But I noticed I've been drawing the bottom lip (which is literally just a line) more often than before so I'm probably going to stick with that for now. The top lip, however, does not exist in my art realm apparently haha

    So I’ve never drawn a black person... There’s no reason I just think I’ve never done it! My style is very diverse so I think if I drew a black person it be just a character with a different skin tone.. Also I don’t think I’ve also done this because I don’t color my pictures so it’s hard to differentiate between there skin tones so I just go with white... Cause I’m lazy.. But black people are so beautiful so I think I’m definitely gonna start drawing them!(more)

    Just a question but is it possible that black people have naturally straight hair? I've seen some black actors with straight hair and wondered if it could be natural or if they straightened their hair.

    Blue Dragon I don't think it's impossible for a black person to have naturally straight hair. From my experience as a black woman, I have naturally coiled hair. I use to straighten it through the process of chemical relaxers and/or flat iron or press out the coils.

    Not what was I talking about. I saw that and had no issue with. I was talking about her debate that no buddy should make solid lines to form the lip and you should break it up, but in that picture she doesn't. That she didn't follow her own "rule" in making them. That's what I was talking about. Someone told me before that she was using "shading" but honestly it makes it look solid line to form the lips still, and I know the fact with lip shadow they do not form like that what she drew on that first picture of the guy. Thanks for trying to give a very sweet insight but wasn't what I was talking about.

    sorry, I should've read it again. but I think its a stylistic thing like how the image itself was block shaded so showing differentiation in the lips was only possible with solid lines.

    I think hair is really a stylistic and skill thing, so it'll all be different and you can't get mad at people for not drawing black hair just like you. Plus, black women can style their hair differently or wear weave/wigs. So, if an artist wants to draw a black woman with straight hair or weave, it should be fine. I know so many black girls that straighten their hair and wear weave or wigs, so why not represent the women that do wear their like that? Men usually don't go all out with their hair like women do, so everything about men's hair is pretty true, but a black woman can still do almost any hairstyle.

    jimin's tiny hands just because a character has already kinky hair doesn't mean they can't style their hair differently. An artist that struggles with kinky hair would give the character a different hairstyle rather than offend anyone by butchering the look of kinky hair. Hair is really versatile and difficult to draw, so we should be accepting of artists just trying their best and learning

  • @jiminstinyhands7776

    @jiminstinyhands7776

    well if the artist is butchering the character's kinky hair they either need to learn how to draw it or dont need to fucking draw that character then. you may not understand this, but doing what you said they should do? just draw them with straight hair? extremely offensive and has some history whitewashing in there too. dont do it, dont be complicit and dont tell others to do it. its fucked up.

  • @AnimeAngel32127

    @AnimeAngel32127

    jimin's tiny hands I never said to just draw them with straight hair, I said they could choose a different hairstyle. There are so many hair styles besides straight and kinky. There are corn rolls, braids, buns, dreads, and wigs. It's not offensive to do a different hairstyle, you're just being overly sensitive. White washing isn't changing a hairstyle, white washing is changing facial features and the skin to be more white.

  • @jiminstinyhands7776

    @jiminstinyhands7776

    clearly you dont understand what whitewashing is if you cant even understand why doing what you said to do would be offensive. also just drawing characters w/ kinky hair with a different hairstyle is ok but you cant do that forever?? these people need to learn how fucking draw black people hair and not make excuses for it.

    I agree with you on a lot of your points and this is a good informative video, but I feel like the way you make some of your points is very vague and not thoroughly explained. You’re kinda just like “don’t do this” “do this only” “this is racist and this is not” when it’s a little more complex than that. Like when u said that “anti black caricatures are bad because they are exaggerated”. Obviously they are bad, but its bad because they look more exaggerated and less human than their white counterparts.(i mean u kind of explained it already but I just feel like it wasn’t very clear to some people). Or when you said “black people have these features, but they can also look different, but that’s also whitewashing”. The features you are referring to are African features. Some African American people have mixtures of European features or other features. So if you are drawing characters with predominantly African features you should do more of these things. If you draw a pre-existing characterr who has more African features with more European features it can come across as whitewashing. It’s just personally I feel you could have went more in depth with it because a lot of people in the comments are not understanding and it makes you sound like you don’t have a lot of knowledge on the matter. (Not that I’m super educated on the matter either, trust me) Not trying to shit on you or anything I swear. Just wanted to give some constructive feedback. Thank you very much for making this. It’s good to educate people on how to portray other ethnicities, races, nationalities and cultures in a respectful way. ✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿

    The fact that there are people out there who’ve actually recognized these caricatures, avoid them, and have taken the effort to actually study what we look like in depth to relay that information to others means more to me than you can imagine. Many will say that this is common sense (it is!) and you’re just doing the right thing everyone is supposed to do (you are!), but the reality is many black people aren’t afforded that. The world is colored by racism and when you draw what your “impression” of a black person is right off the bat, 9/10 it’s colored by harmful stereotypes that dehumanizes us. Everyone who’s mad at the comments somehow seem upset to take a LITTLE more effort to draw their characters with sensibility and tact. That’s that entitlement speaking. Why the fuck are you mad? “Black people can have lighter skin!” Sure we can. Look at me. I mean, aside from the fact that rape during slavery was a thing that led to this, the fact of the matter is that when you see stereotypes and caricatures, it is often directed at us with darker skin. Draw dark black people. They’re EVERYWHERE except in media, where we want to be represented. If you don’t want to offend, keep watching videos like this. Take steps to prevent that shit and do the right thing. And if you do fuck up, which is a part of live, take responsibility and learn what an apology is.
