I recently saw a tutorial that instructs on how to get eyes alike. First you draw some parallel lines to make sure the shape and size are right. You can find the tutorial here on you tube. Search for drawing two eyes alike. I love youtube. You can learn so much. This tutorial very nice.

I like how you begin with the eye and follow angles from there. It’s more helpful than beginning with an oval, subdivided in half, etc.
Your lines are so simple yet the end results are perfect, bloody amazing

These videos are still super good! I went from not knowing anything about shading, to having certain things click for me just after hearing your explanations in this video!
I consider myself a good portrait artist but always struggle mapping out the face. The shading/detail not a problem, how you guys can do this freehand is unbelievable. I have to grid out the face and measure the distances of the eyes, mouth ears etc so painstakingly slow. And even then doesn't always work
@ArtofWeiHo

The head is such a difficult thing to draw, and shading it is extremely difficult, at least for me. If you're doing portraits, have you consider just tracing it? I did some portraits before and I find that people don't really care how you did it. They just want to see your techniques and your expression on the drawing.
@oldboy562

WeiWorks I brought some tracing paper yesterday, simply traced the outline and features then taped it to the drawing paper. Then roughly drawing the outline whilst checking every now and again to see if it lines up. Pretty affective and has saved me a couple of hrs! Once the features are complete I simply start the detail, and just use the tracing paper as a reference guide. Thanks again Wei!

I think the same about you gifted shaders! I can map out and get proportions right free hand well. I’m the opposite. I suck at shading.
This is impressive. I study at a fine art academy and we are taught to go from big to small. This means you plot out the overall shape of the head, add in shadows then work your way down to details. Your method is excellent and seems much faster. Good job.

+Michael Swedenberg That's the usual way of drawing. I just find this way of drawing a bit more accurate. As long as it works, it's good=).

I have only just come across your videos as a complete beginner and find that your style of teaching is good for me and you explain things!
You’re TALENT. I have found myself getting better but go through so many botched drawings to get to one I’m proud of. Shading scares me because I usually mess it up at that point. I just can’t seem to find a rhythm to the lines that doesn’t make it seem like a messy mash up. Drawing on white paper is also harder I find for rendering than toned paper. Keep up the great work 👏🏼

The hard part is doing different angles. It's a total game changer and it's 100x harder to do.
Wei, what a great way to teach shading. Your comments are the perfect blend of tips and demonstration. Excellent!!!
lol I am very glad with my progress. I am only 11 years old and I have almost gotten the shading down. I am still working on it and my symmetry. I am almost at the level in this example. I just wish I could afford more sophisticated drawing supplies. lol! everyone thinks I have a bright future with my drawing. Also thanks for the vid so many helpful tips :D!

Makinzie Hilscher That's great. You can always post it on my facebook page "Art of Wei." As for supplies, it's not expensive. All you need is a 2b and a 4b, that should cost you about $2 total=). You can always just use a regular HB pencil from. It just won't be as dark. But don't let a little thing like that deter you from drawing.
helped a lot kept on failing but this video made my piece come together really well =)

WeiWorks Art school teachers aren't very good either. All they do is give you assignments and critique your work. They never really show you how to do anything. I learned more by watching your soft air brush technique video than any lesson from any professor.

I suppose it depends. But you do learn a lot from other students that are good. The State college that I went to had pretty bad art students, so the environment was not optimal.
Just found this channel and this was extremely helpful!👍
Excellent help, thank you!! I learned sooooooo much. I am by no means an artist, but I love to doodle and always wondered how shading really worked and what to look for. And you took the time to show us to the side the different strokes which seriously helped me out. Ah, thanks!!!

From my experience the material of paper kinda affects shading. Smooth paper makes coal harder to stick and hence harder to make shade. Of course that's just for me, since I'm new to this. Shading is very, very difficult. Thank you for the video. I'm a fan now.
