It's for beginners because he is not really using pencils the way you are supposed to use them. He is engraving the paper before adding graphite on it... and that's not something you do the traditional way. To achieve a real ''pencil'' technique you have to leave the paper WHITE in the places you want it to be white, which means ''saving'' the white areas, just as you normally do in watercolor paintings. So this tutorial is in a way actually for beginners, as doing it the other way takes a lot of skill and planning, and this is the easier way around.

This is awesome, thanks! I've always loved pencil sketches since I was a kid. In 2009 I started learning to do portraits and although I successfully drew a few portraits, I only stuck with it for a couple months and never learned to sketch dogs. I'm hoping I can apply some of your techniques to successfully sketch a Pekingese and a Chihuahua to give as gifts. Thanks so much for sharing your talent! 🙂

Great drawing... looks spot on. Only issue is that this is definitely not for a beginner, unless you add more real time with how to start and how you did the hair. It might push your video another 5 minutes or so, but then that puts it in line with other tutorials of the same nature.... cheers.

Yeah, this is a how to draw video but doesn't show how to draw the dog just how to shade the dog. I haven't watched it but it's probably helpful if you already know how to sketch out the dog.

the indentation stylus for the highlights of the hair strands is so genious. i didnt even know ttthis existed. it's the contrast between shaded and highlighted hair strands has always been my bigest problems when im doing bigger drawings. i gotta get me one and try this!

I'm currently drawing this as we speak! This is the first time ever I'm drawing a realistic doggo and honestly I'm so proud of myself! It looks close to yours. Only for some reason I can't get the right side of the drawing to look good. Could I maybe get some advice?

Try turning the drawing upside down. It may be that your strongly left/right handed or see using more of your left/right eye. Sometimes viewing the drawing from various angles lets you see faults straight away.
