How to Drape a Mermaid Dress | DIY Wedding Dress

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In today's tutorial I will be showing you how to drape a mermaid dress or trumpet style dress as well as how I calculate the skirt and godet for the side seams and center back, and how I transfer my draped pattern pieces to paper. I hope I was really clear in my explanations, this method can be used for any kind of skirt, mermaid/trumpet, a-line, ballgown. As long as you get the numbers correct possibilities are endless and best of all it saves on pattern paper.

    You are really talented Amanda. I'm a new sub and I've been wondering why I hadn't discovered your channel earlier. I love sewing and LOVE anything bridal or special occasion wear. I sew from home, and as a mum with two toddlers makes it very challenging for me, thought of giving up, but since I discovered your channel, it kinda encouraged me. If you can do it successfully, then I think I can. You inspire me a lot and PLS, don't ever think of quitting. You deserve more subs and your channel will grow way more than you expected.

    I don’t know how to exactly phrase my question. I’m not doing a godet, btw. So for the center front panel, you flare out the panel at the princess seam. What do you do for the side front panel at the princess seam and the side seam? Does the SF panel get flared out at the same angle to match the CF at the princess seam? Then at the side seam, do you also flare out the SF panel? So you would have the SF panel flared on both seams instead of one straight and one flared? Does that make sense?

    So draping is essentially smoothing/arranging a piece of fabric over a form and tracing the design you want so you know what 2d shape it is?

  • @MomthatSews

    @MomthatSews

    Yes pretty much. Lol! We trace the design onto paper so that we can reuse the same pattern over and over again and even alter it into something new without having to start from scratch.

    Omg you are so talented. Girl, could you PLS help me. I bought a dress for my wedding reception and it is a mermaid bottom dress. But I am SUPER short .. this dress is ridiculously long on me. I’m worried about how my seamstress will hem / re-shape the bottom of the dress . I’m worried it’s going to ruin all the volume of the dress because I need probably about 4 inches cut off it !!! There is no horizontal line in the waist of the dress for her to lift it up that way....

    Is it possible to do this with a dress form that doesn’t go down to mid thigh like yours does? I think I want to make my own wedding dress eventually (I’m not even engaged lol) and this is like the exact silhouette I love. I’ve been thinking about doing a custom dress form from bootstrap fashion, but none of them seem to come down quite as far as this. They seem to stop right under the butt, rather than at mid thigh. I think that would probably matter with a mermaid dress :( I’m wondering if there’s any reasonable way to use this method with those dress form patterns. I love the idea of a custom dress form because I really don’t plan to make anything like formal gowns for other people. And they’re much cheaper than buying a regular dress form.

  • @MomthatSews

    @MomthatSews

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes it is possible but just more tricky. I suggest buying a mermaid dress pattern and make a mock up with it to fit it to your size. Not a fan of bootstrap

    The reason why you have have to pinch fabric when trimming extra is before trimming fabric its fall on a different body section and is fitted on that body part. But when you cut away extra fabric it falls on a different body part. Since body has curves and hollows when fabric placement differed fit has to be readjusted. English is not my first language so I dont know how to explain it better. Hope you can understand what I was trying to say.
