Thanks, Nigel! I play flute and learning jazz, I've wanted to learn this for a long time. There is literally nothing on KZread explaining this for flute, and even for sax - yours is just about the only one out there, definitely the best. Thanks so much! This has really made a difference.

knowing your chromatic scales on your saxophone is absolutely great. I started just going up and down the chromatic one or two times as a warm-up every time I take my saxophone out of it's case. A year, or maybe two, later, it is just second nature. I recommend learning this. And use that little B flat key. I think it's called the bis key. You can really "flow" with it.

Hi there, As a vocalist, I found this incredibly helpful.. 1.) Chromatic Scales wouldn't hurt, especially for maintaining quality at range 2.) I love the idea of the note falling off and disappearing. Getting lower and softer is my favorite tip. 3.) I think the most influential tip for me is really sticking the start of the note. As a singer where it's easy to miss notes, it's possible thinking of the entire portamento was causing me to start the note somewhere in-between. 4.) Sometimes the face tenses up when singing for one reason or another, but making the intention of relaxing the face helps the note disappear. I love this. 5.) Follow through has helped in the past when stylizing and adding extra huffs while making runs. I'll try to keep it more in mind. S.) I'd like to sign up for sex school.

Can you tell me what kind of mouthpiece you are using here ? I play a metal mouthpiece which suits me fine but when I look for a rubber one they are usually very chunky and don't feel right. Yours looks pretty slim. Kind regards

Hi Nigel, thanks for the lesson(s). I fit in a couple of categories - I played in high school, dropped for quite a while started back several years ago, and am interested in improving my skills. I'm in a stage band, playing alto. There seem to be differences of opinions in the band as to where a fall starts after hitting the staring note. For example, if the music is written with a whole note, or half note with a fall, do you start the fall after playing the whole value of the note, or does the fall end at the end of the value, or what?

Great question Robert. When you are playing in a stage band, it’s important that the whole section approaches the fall off in the same way. Ask your band director, but most commonly you would start the fall-off after the note value in that setting.

I'm hoping this works on flute. I've heard flute players do this sort of thing but wasn't able to find a tutorial.

Same here. Very little on jazz flute, and nothing at all on the fall off. It does work.

Hi nigel for some time I have been having trouble with my tone...in the background all you could hear is air what are some technical things I could try to fix this and fatten and clear up my tone? And I do long tones all the time and they help but is there anything you might suggest to improve my sound?

You can try cleaning the saxophone (if you haven’t tried that already).

Clean it all the time and always check the reed...I have an old beat up selmer bundy 2....makes it so much harder to have a good tone....any other suggestions?

I would get a softer Reed unless it's too soft. Otherwise always wet your reed (all of it even the end you don't use). Position the reed a bit farther up because when it's pushed down by your mouth there should barely be a gap on the tip

But, it turns out that problem was all me, my tone has improved drastically by just putting more air through the instrument and also doing long tones for about 45 minutes before I warm up. It has helped so much and I could clearly hear and feel the difference.

I wonder if a saxophone can do a doit. What would that sound like?

I actually managed the scale at my lesson today. Now all I have to do is pick up the speed before next lesson

I find the f# to f a bit more tricky coming down from the b - the rest are ok...wonder if you can “cheat” that semitone 😎 ? I know better to use it just a bit more tricky when moving fast

Hey George. It's best to use the side F# - it gives you a smoother transition in a chromatic run. Side F# is the normal F fingers plus the extra key under your right ring finger.
