    This sure is an old video, but I just found your channel a few days ago and I'm really enjoying it. I'm working on my undergrad right now and I want to be a clinical therapist and then get my PhD. Your channel really gives me hope for making it to the other side and also gives me more of a model for how to carry myself as a therapist. I really love learning all the interesting things you talk about concerning mental health, burnout, work, and the useful tips as well.

    The whole "work at work, home at home" thing is tricky for me 'cause most of my work happens at home, but I've definitely adapted a strategy of only checking notifications as a conscious process, at least for work stuff. I don't do it at set times, but I close the windows and programs so that I have to actively choose to reopen them in order to see if I have any new notifications or messages. It's really helped lower my stress levels and I'm still checking often enough to catch anything important relatively quickly.

    This is a big challenge for anyone who primarily works from home. I struggle with this myself when making videos or doing paperwork at home. I love what Stephen King says about this in his memoir "On Writing": “It starts with this: put your desk in the corner, and every time you sit down there to write, remind yourself why it isn't in the middle of the room. Life isn't a support system for art. It's the other way around.” The idea of creating a dedicated space that is primarily for work, and using your work rules (no distractions) has helped me when I work at home. I know a lot of people who work from home but find public spaces like coffee shops or shared workspaces (e.g. WeWork) to also help. Sounds like closing windows has been a successful strategy for you! When I really struggle with this, I use browser website blocker plugins for things like social media and the news. Thanks for watching and for commenting 12tone!!!

    aw your pup is adorable. for me getting a dog actually really helped me estabilish more of a routine - i'm forced to go outside and feed another creature which has the added benefit of reminding me to move and feed myself. plus snuggling with her is an excellent way to relax and step away from the stresses of work.

    I loved how you deal with things, how you accept that there will be no balance but to tolerate that.     That assertiveness technique is a useful idea! I've always had a hard time saying no that way. And that post-it technique sounds really useful. I used it sort of when I was doing my thesis, but this is a variant that could be helpful! Burnout was a real issue for me both in academia and in doing personal projects. Mostly I just tried to hold off the things that were bothering me when I was there and focus on other things. But that's not always possible, and I really got ground down a few times.

    There is a Buddhist temple in Chicago that I go to for Sunday morning meditation sessions whenever I'm feeling overwhelmed with work. Sitting and doing nothing is literally the hardest thing I've ever done, but after doing it for a while it's become easier for me to clear my mind and focus on what needs to get done.

    What's funny is I run a business selling retro video games (and handmade items related to it) and my mind is constantly going and I've been deprived of sleep the last few days because I'm always thinking of my business (this was a life goal). There are times when life becomes this overwhelming beast and I do deal with burnout. My problem and I guess what's funny is that I don't even allow myself to distress from games! They are one of my biggest passions in life, music as well, and I am trying to stop denying myself these things because I feel I have to be on point, focused, and be everything to everyone in my life. This was wonderful as all your videos have been.

    I have my dream job but I just found that I hit burnout this week for the the first time in 4 years. I am sleep deprived. I haven't eaten well for breakfast for a long time. I don't get to walk much. You got me. Looks like it's time to make some changes. I love your post it exercise before going home.

    Definitely check out the description of this video for more resources. Good news here is you're catching it now before it gets worse. It's never too late to start making changes that help you cope with your situation. I love psychology, love being a psychologist, AND at the same time I have a tendency to take on too much because of how much I love this stuff. Perhaps a similar thing happened to you?

    Burnout is so over looked by psychologists (as in burnout of the psychologist). So vital to appreciate it more if better work and services are to be provided by psychologists.

    Thank you for your helpful advices; I have a conflict that I would be so thankful if you help me for. What do you do, as a therapist, not to get impressed by your clients’ bad moods and feelings, and not thinking about them, e.g. anxiety, OCD and rumination, or depression

    I LOVE to ride my bike. If I lived in a less crowded city, I'd bike to work. Biking makes me feel like a kid again. It's just a ton of fun for me. Other than that during the day at work, I do a lot of stretching and walking. Most of my job is spent sitting in a chair so my muscles need the movement.

    I am a victim of a serious burnout... I delayed months to feel batter, I'm 9 months further and I still don't feel like I was. Could you please tell, the scientific difference between the common burnout (get some rest, tomorrow it's fine) compared to what I have.. (give me a year of complete peace, I won't be myself again)

    I'm sorry to hear about your burnout. I recommend looking into some of the resources I link to in my description to this video for more on burnout. I would also look to see if you are only feeling this way in relation to work or if you also experience this outside of work and on your off days. If you do, you might want to complete a depression screening to see if your burnout has grown into depression: www.mentalhealthamerica.net/mental-health-screen/patient-health. If it has, professional help might be the next step. I hope this was helpful!

    I've been watching your videos and you give great information which is why I subscribed but there are WAY too many jump cuts in my opinion. It's very distracting. In the first minute of this video you jump cut 11 times, in the Learning from Failure video there was 13 jump cuts just in the first minute. Each video I have watched so far has been like this. You are a really smart guy and I'm sure you could deliver the same information without having to Frankenstein your sentences together with jump cuts to present your thoughts clearly.

    Thanks for your feedback! When I launched the channel and was learning to edit, I modeling my style of editing on the Vlogbrothers. They aggressively edit out breaths and all breaks in their sentences. Now, having built up an audience and feeling more confident in the script writing and editing areas of production, I want to reduce jump edits and aim for something that has the flow of a Vox video. It's tough not having visuals to cut to, as that's how many channels hide their jump edits. But I'll work on it. Thanks again for taking the time to share your feedback.

Thank you for being receptive to feedback, I didn't want to come off as a troll or heckler because I really do enjoy your content and appreciate your videos. It was just something that stood out to me that I thought was worth a mention. In my opinion, the occasional pauses, uhs and ums are especially important from intellectual figures such as yourself. With jumpcuts it feels less like a conversation and more like an artificial production. There is a certain beauty in listening to an intelligent person explain something and then take a pause to gather their thought so they can articulate it exactly how they want to.
