They teach Hapkido at Executive Security International in Aspen Colorado. It is an excellent style for bodyguards. You don't necessarily want to injure someone who's threatening you client. If you can control them, without causing injury, your actions are more defensible in court later.

at 2:04 you step to the side of his chambered hand that "could hit you" Is there another application of the techniques that address this Sir.

If you see my both hands at 2:04, I blocked both sides of my face. Probably the camera angle does not show it properly. When we step into inside of my opponent (the side of his chambered hand), we make sure to block both side of our face. or if you see 3:56, we can block the fist with my left hand and cover the opponent's eyesight or hit his face with my right hand to protect myself from his other side punch. Anyway, the key is to distract or do my move before his 2nd punch comes. I know everyone attacks different way. This is one of the ways to do punch defence. This video shows the applications of the basic techniques in different situations.

Can hapkido be trained or practice alone?

  • @self-defence

Probably not. It would be better to have a partner for self defence techniques training.

in ki-aikido they use to practice the techniques even alone as if there would be a partner (tsuzuki-waza i guess it's called), but it's easier if you find someone to train with.

I know HApkido is a great martiAl art but i just don’t understand why the big focus on wrist graps.. was it created for a specific purpose that involved wrist graps so much? Just asking because a wrist grap isn’t the most common occurrence in a street fight

I totally agree with you. If I answer with humble experience and knowledge... Hapkido has been developed from Yoosool(유술)/Jiujitsu which is grappling based. So techniques against wrist or sleeve grabbed are the basic and learned early stage of training. That’s why it seems that Hapkido is very much focused on wrist grabbed situation. I believe we can learn the basic techniques from wrist grabbed and use / apply those in other situations like punching defence and other places grabbed. In our style, we do wrist grabbed techniques in white and yellow belt. Thank you for sharing your inquires.

these grabs have their purpose: a soldier or police can't get his arm grabbed by his wrist(s), could come along another mugger for strangulation of the grabbed one or the 1.one gets behind the defender to do the same with his/her forearm against defender's throat or make an x with defender's arms throwing him down.

My thought has always been that while a straight wrist grab won't happen very often, it's a good reference point to learn the simple concepts to later apply to specific what ifs.

Hapkido techniques do not require strength and, in conflict situations, they allow the defender to gain complete control with minimal effort and without aggression or injuries to the attacker.

I found mistake in subtiles in English. Aikido? No. Hapkido is right. I know Akido is Japan martial arts name. Hapkido is Korean martial arts.

Korean vs Japanese, Hapkido circle is smaller, Generally, Hapkido techniques are more direct. Hapkido has kicks too.

Hapkido is the transliteration of Japanese Aikido, and the both mean "the way of harmony" or "the way of coordinated energy." Great video!

@biggavelle662 of course Hapkido came from Aikijujutsu, precisely Daito-Ryu. I'm just saying Hapkido is the transliteration of the Japanese name of the art Aikido
