    A couple tips scotty forgot to mention. Some cars the piston can't be just pushed back in with pliers, some screw back in and require special tools.(VW, Audi) Rotors typically don't just pull off, usually you need penetrating oil and a hammer. Grease the caliper slide pins. After you are finished and BEFORE you drive away, pump the brake pedal several times until its firm otherwise you will have almost no braking when you step on the pedal the first few times. That is very dangerous.

    you should also chock the back wheels and dont forget to remove them when your done and before trying to drive away.

    You can also take some brake fluid out of the master cylinder (under the hood for those reading this that dont know where that is) that way when you push the piston in with your locking pliers or a good old c clamp...the fluid has somewhere to go and the piston isnt as difficult to squeeze out of the way so you can install those brake pads easily :-)

    I just finished my first home-done brake job today. Many thanks to you & other online mechanics for the encouragement and advice. One major hitch that I hit was the rotor. In this video you said "the brake rotor slides right off", and it seemed so easy. You can guess now what happened in my case: it didn't slide off. It was stuck on so hard that I kept looking around to see if there was a bolt or something that I'd missed which was still holding it on. Long story short, it finally came off. 'Took it for a test drive on the highway a couple of hours ago, and the brakes worked better than ever. Thanks again!

    Scotty, almost every online video (other channels and content providers)I have watched on providing a caliper brake job have missed mentioning tightening the guide pin bolts. The guide pin bolts will spin without applying tension to the indexed/slotted/keyed part of their shaft while applying tension to the guide pin bolt. While replacing pads and rotors on my Firebird last week, I called a friend for advice. Two of four of these bolts need a bracing like tension applied.

    I always remove the cap on the master cyl. before pushing the pistons back in.

  • @mrman17
    @mrman179 жыл бұрын

    One thing I'll add to this - with brakes worn this much, the fluid will drop in the fluid reservoir, and may have been topped up, so when you push the cylinder back into the caliper, that fluid gets pushed back up into the reservoir. There can sometimes be more fluid than the reservoir can hold, and that fluid has to go somewhere. In some covers there is a small breather hole (mainly on older cars) - so, as you push the cylinder back into the caliper, you can actually get a fountain of brake fluid spray up from this hole and over your car - as you may know, brake fluid and paint do not get on well. So, I would recommend taking the cap off the brake fluid reservoir. You should check the fluid lever after changing pads and shoes anyway.

    I think you can go one more step with pads that has a tab on it to make noise before the pad run's out, is to put the tab on the side that wore out before so hopefully you'll hear from the tab before the bad thing happens.

    Scotty, I was putting on new performance brake rotors and pads, fronts went flawlessly, but when prepping rear left caliper for new pads via pressing piston with pressing kit, it was just STUCK. So when I thought I could loosen it by pressing brake and pulling eBrake, I heard a THUD noise and there was a puddle of fluid under the wheel and a piston a good 18 inches away on the ground. It had a thread so It screwed back in second time fine like there was nothing wrong, and I just installed everything anyways. What else should I do? Brake pedal is squishy.

    Thanks Scotty Kilmer, any advice/thoughts on bonded vrs riveted shoes and pads? I am happier when they are bonded because I know the rivets reduce the depth/lifetime of the shoes/pads and gouge the drums/rotors so much worse when they wear out. I don't understand why the companies don't always bond instead of rivets however I imagine there are disadvantages and advantages to both.

    Depending on the thickness left in the rotor, some auto shops can resurface them smooth which is cheaper than a whole new rotor. The same with brake drums. Of course, you can only do it a few times until the rotor (or drum) is no longer a safe thickness and you gotta finally buy a new one, but at least in the long rn you saved some money and made full use of what you paid for.

    how much torque should be applied on the two caliper bolts? Because one time I did my brake job one of the bolts came loose while I was driving causing the caliper to rub on the rim.

    Have you ever tried a C clamp as opposed to pliers for compressing the piston? That's what I typically use although I'm not sure if you had any thoughts on that or not.

    +RedWings-44 Scotty is a better man than me ! I always used a good C clamp and one of the old pads as a protective base to compress the caliper piston evenly. If I tried relying on my grip and a set of Channelocs I would still be out in the driveway.

    Hey Scotty! I have a 2006 Chrysler Pacifica and it had the same problem, which was making noises from the back wheel. But, it has an hydraulic e-brake and a car mechanic who was a friend of ours told us not to use it, especially in the winter (I'm from Canada), but my dad used about 2 weeks ago for the first time and after that, it started making rattling noises and it got worse. Also, the ABS light came on. It's at the mechanic now. What do you think the problem is, most likely? Thank you

    I was wondering when you'd show us how to fit new brakes Scotty! A quick question though, when pushing the piston back in, don't you have to pop the lid off the brake fluid reservoir and compress slowly to make sure the brake lines don't bulge or burst? Thanks!

    There's usually a small air valve on the reservoir that releases excess air as the piston is pushed in and out
