How to do a fast flipturn in freestyle. Swimming technique

Most people when they swim slow down during the flip turn. However, the flip turn should be a boost of speed during your swim. To do a very fast freestyle flip turn we will take a look at three things that can make it or break it.
The first is the angle at which you push.
To push in a straight angle you need to land with your feet a little bit separated and the knees bent a little more than 90 degrees.
The last point is something most of all struggle with. Because landing perfectly in the wall is very important, many of us look at the wall before we turn. It is not a big deal, but if you want to get a little faster on each wall and every tenth of a second is extremely important to you, then it is worth practicing. By keeping your head in line with your body, you are dragging less water and you will be in a better position to push off the wall.
There you go. Oh and don’t forget to blow bubbles out of your nose or water will get in when you turn.

Okay so I’m in high school, and this girl beat me by 0.2 seconds in the 500yd swimm, and I got hella mad. This video was very informative, but I’m not sure how I can’t not look at the wall to see where I’m going, it kind of sounds scary to me.. any suggestions?

One observation of mine, while lap swimming and watching others is that the head high coming into the wall is what many do to 'see' the wall. Learning to 'see' the wall by looking up with your eyes, rather than raising your head pretty much eliminates this problem, some thing I learned when swinging around the high bar in gymnastics. The head high also seems to contribute to having your bum come way up in the air when you turn, which could come in handy if you are doing flip turns in 3 feet of water and don't want to leave skin or fur in my case, on the bottom of the pool. If you are getting that sonic boom/kerthump sound when you do your flip turns, your head is too high...I have to spot the wall when I turn, I just don't trust the marks on the bottom of the pool. Not exact enough........

Maybe you are going to deep? Maybe you are moving your head too much? I don’t really know without watching your turn but it’s not normal 😕

1 00:00:01,489 --> 00:00:05,230 Fast Flipturn! 빠른 엎어 돌기!(flip turn) 2 00:00:09,367 --> 00:00:13,754 Most people when they swim slow down during the flip turn. 3 00:00:13,831 --> 00:00:18,250 However, the flip turn should be a boost of speed during your swim. 4 00:00:18,370 --> 00:00:23,526 A fast flip turn has three things that can make it or break it. 5 00:00:23,622 --> 00:00:26,931 The first is the angle at which you push. 6 00:00:27,001 --> 00:00:31,342 Here you can see that she was too close to the wall when she pushed. 7 00:00:31,367 --> 00:00:38,095 Because of that her legs were too high and she pushed down too much. 8 00:00:38,262 --> 00:00:41,399 This other example is the opposite. 9 00:00:41,510 --> 00:00:48,893 He pushed upwards and then had to come back down a little to make an underwater kick. 10 00:00:49,009 --> 00:00:55,175 Ideally you want to push in a straight angle perpendicular to the wall. 11 00:00:55,278 --> 00:01:02,420 This way you will create less resistance and you will be in a good position to do as many underwater kicks as you want. 12 00:01:02,445 --> 00:01:12,205 To push in a straight angle you need to land with your feet a little bit separated and the knees bent a little more than 90 degrees. 13 00:01:12,404 --> 00:01:15,839 Here you can see I landed with my feet too close. 14 00:01:15,911 --> 00:01:25,854 However, it is acceptable to have one foot slightly in front of the other, this will help you rotate your body right away during the streamline. 15 00:01:25,965 --> 00:01:34,486 Be careful to land with both feet well on the wall or otherwise you will end up pushing with mainly one foot. 16 00:01:34,586 --> 00:01:38,483 The last point is something most of all struggle with. 17 00:01:38,531 --> 00:01:45,842 Because landing perfectly in the wall is very important, many of us look at the wall before we turn. 18 00:01:45,937 --> 00:01:57,144 It is not a big deal, but if you want to get a little faster on each wall and every tenth of a second is extremely important to you, then it is worth practicing. 19 00:01:57,279 --> 00:02:05,446 By keeping your head in line with your body, you are dragging less water and you will be in a better position to push off the wall. 20 00:02:05,542 --> 00:02:15,375 Take a look at these two examples, at full speed. 21 00:02:15,787 --> 00:02:17,771 Did you notice the difference? 22 00:02:17,850 --> 00:02:26,021 It is very subtle but if we slow it down you will be able to see it more clearly. 23 00:02:32,898 --> 00:02:41,047 Oh and don’t forget to blow bubbles out of your nose or water will get in when you turn. 24 00:02:41,708 --> 00:02:45,141 If you want to buy one of our swim caps click here! 25 00:02:45,255 --> 00:02:47,833 See you next time!
