How to dive for scallops (well how I dive for them anyway)

Ойын-сауық

I am not a commercial scallop diver and I don't pretend to know everything about diving for scallops, also I'm aware there is others out there with more than my 12 years of scallop diving experience. This is just how I dive for scallops and the little tricks and observations I have gathered over the last 12 years. Hope this helps you understand what I'm thinking and why I do certain things underwater. I hope other can gain a little education and help consumers of this delicacy obtain an incite to how scallops are gathered and the work which it takes. A good bag of scallops in Guernsey is a 100 plus but I'm well below this on most dives and prefer to allow other-like minded people to enjoy an over the shoulder experience of what I get up to, without getting cold or wet. Some may not even have the physical ability or cash to experience the sea and all its hidden beauties. Hope you enjoy this video.

Every diver has its own way and method to scallop dive each to their own I guess but end result the same a bag full, not many fish about is a worrying trend of late, but nice to see the spider crabs are making their way back in thanks for the ride JP

Thanks Barry. I’m sure we will see the fish return soon. The Commercial fisherman haven’t seen any fish for a few weeks either. There is Bream and longnose returning but we never really see them when underwater as they scare very easily. Take care mate 👍🏻👍🏻

If you ever visit the Island I’m sure you could come out and join us. It’s great fun as a hobby but not sure I could survive if it was a full time job. 😂😂 thanks James. 👍🏻👍🏻

Ignore my comment. They look bigger on camera than in real life. Great video. Thanks!

How deep are you? Is there a specific season, or can you find these year round?

It varies dependant on location but between 10m and 45m. They are found all year around. The summer months we leave them as we will be diving shipwrecks instead. 👍🏻😁
