How to maintain the softness of the water by lessening calcium?

Do I need to bypass my sediment filter too? If so, that means the small amount of dirt/sand this filter captures would flow thru my house pipes / faucets, hot water heater... Is that correct?

Yes, you will want to bypass all water treatment. You should start running the water outdoors first before running into your home so only minimal sediment should enter your home plumbing.
