Great video! I got a Remington sportsman model 58 in the 20 gauge version. It priceless to me. My grandfather bought it for my dad for his 12th birthday. Dad passed it to me when he passed away a few years ago. I plan to pass it on to my grandson some day. Amen brother!

Well done. I recently inherited this same gun after my grandfather passed away. I have yet to shoot it, but nice knowing how to disassemble the gun in detail. Very informative.

Thanks for the video. I got my 58 new when I was a kid and still have it. It was heavy enough to not kick me too much and not too heavy for me to carry all day. Mine has a 28" full choke barrel. It seems odd to other people, but it shoots it's best pattern for squirrels and birds with #7-1/2 shot and for deer it's best with #4 buck shot. I've been told to not shoot slugs much because it will spread the barrel to a larger diameter. I did try slugs, but they sail all over the place too much to be accurate. When I took my oldest son squirrel hunting I took aim on a squirrel and when I shot the squirrel dropped straight to the ground. My son told me when we picked up the squirrel that he thought the squirrel was way out of range. A few times I had 4 or 5 squirrels in the same tree and tried to wait until 2 of them were lined up so I could try getting 2 with one shot. The squirrels never cooperated with me for that.

Thanks for the great video. I'm reworking mine right now. I picked it up at a pawn shop 5 or 6 years ago for a little over a $100 bucks. It was in very rough shape but a few spare minutes here and there is coming along slowly but nicely. A couple of people has told me always to run it in the heavy load setting, .and to run light loads through only due to improved powders and shell technology. Shells now are hotter shooting than 60+ years ago. I do the same thing in my 1958 auto-5. I always start off in the heavy setting; if it doesn't cycle, I switch it to the light setting. I don't want the gun beating it's self to death on the wrong setting. Again thanks for the great video and I enjoyed watching it fire.

Good info to learn! I had cycling problems about 8 shots in with target load 7.5 shot. May have been in H setting. I’ll try L and see how it goes.

I also have a Remington Model 58 Sportsman that I purchased used a little over 50 years ago. I used it for several years for bird hunting but retired it to my closet about 40 years ago. Recently I decides to pass it along to my nephew. I demonstrating it I ran into an issue I was unaware of. I was using 12 ga dummy shells for safety in training but found that after loading the chamber & magazine with dummy shells,dry-firing the round in the chamber then manually racking the bolt to the rear, that the bolt locked to the rear rather than chambering the next round from the magazine. The next round was moved from the mag into the ejection port but just rested on the follower. It was necessary to press the follower release button to chamber the shell. After repeating the process several times I came to the conclusion that the bolt on the Model 58 must always lock to the rear unless a live round is fired. As I live in the city I have no way to test out my theory so I was wondering if you might be able to shed some light on my dilemma.

Great video. Thanks for the info. Just as an FYI if you are looking to remove the rear stock you can do so by removing the the rubber pad which allows access to a flathead bolt. That bolt runs the length of the stock and threads into the receiver. Thanks again for the video!

This is the best of several other videos that I found. Thanks for providing the details. Remington has a copy of the original owners guide containing breakdown and assembly instructions at www.remington.com/sites/default/files/Model%20Sportsman%2058.pdf .The online manual and your video compliment each other.

We own this model in 16 gauge...it still functions, I do need to get it some range time soon...it is not pristine, my dad took it hunting quite a bit, so scratches and wear evident...doesn't matter, this gun stays in the family...

I just bought a 20 gauge sportsman 58 at a gun by back at the police department parking lot in Fort Worth Texas. The gentleman I bought it from, a good old boy, said that it had a broke part inside. He says someone told him that a slide has worn very thin?? I just picked it up yesterday so I haven't had a chance to break it down and take a look at it myself. If there is such a part that is damaged, now I've got to try to find a place to get replacement parts.

Just inherited one and it had cycling problems. I was using bird load and I may have had it on the H setting. I didn’t know about the settings before I shot it. Got about six shots out but the 8th shot didn’t cycle. I think the L setting might fix that. I’ll use only standard bird or target loads in it. I understand a high power load in the L setting could blow the cap off. Do you shoot skeet in L setting?

I'd assume H. Because your cheapest buckshot is going to have more recoil than the cheapest birdshot you can find

I have had my 20 guage 58 since 1963 (I was 14). The H / L settings are for High Brass and Low Brass Shells, which as I understand it also means High and Low powder loads. I recently shot mine with a Low Brass shell while on the High setting, and it did not retain enough gas pressure to load the next shell.

If you're holding the gun in front of you with the buttstock towards yourself and the muzzle away from you, grab the charging handle and pull towards the right.

Unnecessary operating system. It could have been a simpler and more ergonomic design.
