How to disassemble and maintain the Ontario RAT 2 pocketknife

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Ontario RAT II is one of the best pocketknives out there, particularly under $50. Today, I take it apart, lube it up, and clear off some rust. It's a bit longer than usual, doing the complete breakdown, but I had fun, and did some quality ranting. Hopefully you enjoy too!

Nick...I love these disassembly videos while I'm either sharpening or tuning up my knives. I play them on my phone and leave it on my workbench to sort of play in the background. It's nice to feel like I'm not the only weirdo playing with knives as an adult.

If I might say a quick thank you, Nick. Never in my lifetime have I ever actually sat down and fully disassembled a knife. It’s just something I considered an annoyance that I could never do and wasn’t coordinated enough for. Same with maintaining them. It always seemed like something left for someone else to do. But, in watching your videos, and getting the confidence up, as well as having the right tools and materials to do such a feat, I have now done so and found it relaxing. Now my Rat 2 in D2 is just perfect. Since it’s my EDC, I use it every day, and it started to get bad, so I used the wiha bitset, got some low viscosity mineral oil (I want my knives to be food safe) and two mini red solo cups marked “clip” and “no clip” for the screws from each side. Took it fully barebones and it reminded me of what I love about a basic knife. So thank you, Nick. You’ve made me a happy man.

LOVED this video! Thank you so much. First time taking it apart and needed guidance and this was perfect. I didn't have any lube for mine (other than generic silicone lubricant for hinges) and my knife wasn't corroded too much (other than the blade hinge hole slightly). But alcohol wipes and manual persuasion took it off. I didn't end up lubing it after all and the action is way better now that I cleaned 5 years of pocket crud out of it. Now it feels almost like new!

I just picked up a Rat2D2 online for $45 and I love it.... for the money it would be nice if it had some kind of spring assist, but it certainly isn't necessary and the knife appears as though it'll last a lifetime as long as I don't hammer on it or treat it like a crowbar.... I appreciate you posting this video so that I can use your guidance when the time comes for me to overhaul my own Rat 2.

February 5th, 2020 I finally decided to order the Rat 1 (AUS 8) for $25 from Amazon. It arrived yesterday (Prime) and so far I like it. I'll probably get the Rat 2 in D2 which is $40 on Amazon. For almost two years I've been carrying a Kershaw Blur as my EDC folder and I didn't get the Rat 1 to replace the Blur I got the Rat 1 to carry around the house and yard. I like the satin blade on the Rat 1 but I'm more of a fan of darker blades and I kind of wished I got the black blade (like my Blur) but I will definitely get the Rat 2 D2 with the black blade because I like the look and to add corrosion resistance.

Just got myself an ontario rat 2 in aus8 a few days ago and I am digging it. The only issue I'd say is that when folded, the tip of the knife seems a little too "shallow", if any of you get what I mean, and I am worried that the inside of my pocket is going to get shredded every time I pocket my knife. Already sliced my hand when I was pulling something else out of my pocket. Any ideas on how to fix this or if I should try my luck with another ontario 2 or even 1 model and hope the blade folds a little deeper? Thanks adam

Here's something you might try. IMHO the main friction in the blade comes from the detent ball pressing against it. I put speck of grease in the detent hole with a toothpick and let the ball spread it. It seems to eliminate maybe 50% of the friction. I use green grease that I stole from work about 15 years ago. Actually I didn't steal it, it came with repair kits we got and there was enough grease with each kit to do at least five kits and was in a convenient little pocketable tube

If you put lube into the standoff thread, Locktite won't "lock". Because it's literally a glue. And glue (this or any other) won't stick to a greased surface.

Any recommendations for a uncentered blade for the r2d2? Mine is super far towards the right side for some reason

Lossen the right side pivot, then tighten the left side pivot

close the knife, loosen all the screws, all 9 or so of them including the pivot, and press the blade against the side in the direction it needs to go while you retighten all the screws

I've been using a 100 year old bottle of Singer sewing machine oil, just because it was around. For me, just the tiniest bit on the end of a toothpick per surface. The tiniest bit of fresh 10w30 motor oil would be interesting -- it's super slick as you know if you've gotten it on tools Breakfree spreads, migrates, everywhere. Which is fine for a rifle, especially the barrel, but I don't think I'd want a knife like that.

Has anyone tried to replace the Teflon and Bronze washers with a single washer of the appropriate thickness? Is it possible?

  • @andrewryan1203

berlinetta350 centering might be off bronze is by far the best brass is next. If your thinking about it because teflon is "bad" your wasting time teflon wears over time but while not recommend with teflon you could run dry. If you polish the bronze and use graphite grease the action will eventually be smoother than high polished brass/bronze replacements.

Andrew Ryan I don't see why centering would be off if you replaced the 4 washer setup with a 2 washer setup of the same thickness on each side. Only reason would be to obtain a slightly better action and not have to worry about the Teflon falling apart over time.

berlinetta350 The centering could be off for a Number of reason knife design, tolerances of the knife, washer shape, manufacturer quality control, etc I understand wanting to have Something that will last but to wear I've never personally worn out a teflon washer not even on a 2 year old cryo with a broken assist I gave my father. If you play with knifes and keep them over oiled and spotless yes the action is marginally smoother however is you use your knife as a tool and it gets really grimy before you clean it teflon is significantly smoother. Honestly if you want that frictionless action so you can flip all day and fidget for hours on end do yourself a favor and get something rolling on bearings.

I'm very interested in this knife. It doesn't look special to me in any way, yet I want to own one. Maybe it's because I don't have one and people seem to like it. Sigh........ Does that make me a knife nerd ? Lol

I was servicing my rat 2 and accidentally stretched one if the teflon washers so I didnt reinstall them. The action seems the same to me. Only difference is the blade centering seems ever so slightly worse. But honestly not the end of the world.
