HOW TO DIGITIZE YOUR ARTWORK

In this video, I share how I digitize my watercolor artwork using a scanner and an iPad with the Procreate app to remove the background from an image. I hope showing how I do it gives you some good starting points to experiment with a workflow yourself. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask!

    Always make sure to check with your professional printer and/or client before you begin the process, to ensure you know what is needed in terms of file format, DPI, color model, etc. The advice in this video is what I have learned works well for my art for purposes of sharing it online in my portfolio, on Instagram, and printing of postcards. There are many factors that could influence and make other settings better for your art work, but here are some ideas to get you thinking about what settings to consider!

    You can save time by selecting the layer using the free form tool and sliding the pen along the screen to adjust the selection threshold. Then invert selection and delete the background. You’ll be left with very little to clean up so it will take a lot less time.

    Seems like creating the option to place just the bee on any background of choice alone would be worth the trouble. Bonus points for being able to have a clean, dust and crease free white background. Awesome job on your presentation and execution. I feel like already know hundreds more things after watching this!

Or if I want to create compositions using the same design over and over on the same sheet, they also come out blurry. Do you know how to fix that?

    After watching several "Calvin at Drifter Studios" procreate videos I started to use his method of putting the selection tool on automatic, dragging either your finger or pencil across the screen and the selection turns blue. Try to select as much background as possible, then go to your layer and scroll down to the "clear" option. You can either turn off the background layer or change the color to see that it was removed. Also, the easier way to "undo" is to tap 2 fingers on the screen. Hope this helps.

    Thanks for watching and commenting! My first scans also looked that way. It got even worse when I then printed them out for a portfolio for a conference, it was truly embarrassing. It was dull and dark. When I started experimenting with the settings, things got much better. The switch to TIFF for me did wonders, and the higher DPI, too. I know this is nothing new from what I said in the video, but definitely worth playing around with until you find the right settings for your art work. Worst case scenario, sometimes I up the contrast/vibrancy a bit in Procreate in post-editing, but I try to avoid it if possible. Let me know how it goes!

    Hi, thanks for the video! If I need to correct some colors or brightness/saturation on a scanned piece of art, like watercolor or gouache for instance, what’s the best way in Procreate? Can you recommend which tools and methods to use that will be appropriate if the art was going to be printed? I scanned a gouache piece and some parts of the scan seem ok while others need to definitely be fixed (color is off). But I don’t want the touched up parts to look weird and artificial next to the original parts that don’t need retouching, if that makes sense. Is there a natural looking way to retouch a watercolor on Procreate?

Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! In general, if I understand your questions correctly, you can definitely drop it onto the page for a storybook as one image. It will be a question of whether you like the style with the cut out and the background etc., but technically it should be an option. Hope you were able to find a solution in the mean time that works for you!

  • @HarmonyHardin

    @HarmonyHardin

    Hi Veronica, do you want to add the original back or recreate the same on the scanned version? I would recommend adding a new procreate layer and testing out different procreate brushes as you draw in that new layer to try to recreate the fine details digitally as a last step.

    Hi Harmony this was super helpful and thank you for sharing. One quick question. When you scan do you find that you lose the brightness abs vivid colours you may have used a little .. so the scan is more muted than the original or am I missing something I should be doing. I think I have the same scanner as you. J

  • @HarmonyHardin

    @HarmonyHardin

    3 жыл бұрын

    Dear Juli, thanks so much for taking the time to watch this video and comment. I am really happy to hear it was helpful! I looked back at my settings in the scanner software, and did not see any additional settings I had configured that would have an impact on color. I do recall the first few times I scanned watercolor, it was very muted/faint. The colors were totally off. Once I switched to a higher DPI and most critically scanning in the TIFF format instead of JPEG, that issue mostly resolved itself. Sometimes I do find the color needs a bit more oomph. In that case, I add a layer on top in Procreate and use the watercolor brush to add some more saturation. Alternatively, I select the little wand icon for adjustments in Procreate, and adjust either the Saturation, Brightness or Color Balance to get more vibrancy. I am sorry, those are probably things you have tried already and not some new trick. I hope it helps anyway!

    Very helpful. Allí want is to do is to be able to combine certain elements from my different paintings and have them printed into cards, etc. for my personal use. Is it possible to scan directly into my iPad w/o using a PC? Thanks for a great video

  • @HarmonyHardin

    @HarmonyHardin

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Angie! I don’t use them so cannot recommend a particular one, but there are several scanner apps for iPad in the app store. If they allow you to select a high DPI (or have those as a default), that could be an alternative. Then you would still simply import the file into Procreate. If you have each image on a separate layer, you can easily delete the background and create a beautiful composite image by drag and dropping each layer until you like the composition. Let me know if you have additional questions/ try and this is unclear.

    Sorry it took so long to reply! Have been taking a bit of a hiatus from KZread, but will be back early next year with lots of new artist interviews and a few tutorials :). Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! As for your question, I am not sure. I am certain you have found an answer by now, but in general: the larger you paint, the easier it will be. Otherwise you need a very high resolution with the scanner to blow it up large. However, you also need to keep in mind the size of your scanner. If you paint too large, you will have to stitch the scanned image back together into one, because it will not fit onto the scanner bed. I always paint small so I am a bad artist to answer this question well! Hope you find a great solution :)

    Nice work but when you said you are not very good at tracing around the drawing that was when you almost made a mistake. You have to say you are pretty good at this and then you will be less likely to make any mistakes. My friend Mavis Nicholson once suggested I try this type of design work. You can see her on one of my play lists interviwing Elizabeth Taylor. Sadly she died last year. The water colour bee you created and designed. I thought you might put it in that colourful garden image on your laptop about 37 seconds into the video. Now I'm inspired, by your creativity. I will try to improve my novel book cover design that I simply scanned from a water colour drawing I made.

    Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave such a kind and thoughtful comment. You are right: the way we speak about ourselves and to ourselves matters, and I should be kinder and more confident when I do! I will try to remember. Thanks for reminding me :). I will have to have a look at your playlist too! And I hope you created something you love, if you did re-do your cover. Wishing you a great day!

    Do you have an entire course on how to become a self taught illustrator ? Cause if not... Like where do people even go to learn how to use these programs haha! Are you self taught or did you study in college? Do you illustrate ever digitally or do you always do handdrawn? Thank you for this video tutorial... Loved it and your bee is perfect.

    Hi dear Chantel, thanks so much for watching and leaving this comment! There are definitely online courses like a masters in illustration that one can take, and many many artists offer more targeted courses like how to use a specific Adobe product or procreate for example. There are also lots of courses on picture book illustration. I don‘t have a course myself, but if you have something more specific in mind, I am happy to share about the courses I have heard of for that theme! Sorry this is not a more helpful answer. Feel free to write back and I will answer again :).

    Does it matter what iPad you have? I would like to purchase one and am trying to find a cheaper model than the one you have linked but I just wanted to know if there's a certain year/model that this process works better or worst with? I don't mind spending more money if it's worth it but if I can get away with a cheaper option I'd rather that. Thanks.

    Hi, thank you for your tutorial. I have just a quick question, if you would like to sell the bee as a sticker, and send it for printing, do you have to send the artwork in vectors or is it ok if you send it in high quality png/jpeg/psd (pixels)?

  • @HarmonyHardin

    @HarmonyHardin

    6 күн бұрын

    Hi there! You will have to check with your printer company what the accept. Format, DPI etc. differs between each company, what is printed onto, etc. I always use pixels, because the method I showed in this video does not create vectors. Programs like Adobe Illustrator can do that, but it is hard to capture watercolor art in vectors. Printing in pixels has its pros for watercolor, but some companies will not accept or guarantee a good result with pixels. Find some companies you might want to use and ask them what they are willing to work with :). Best of luck with your stickers!

    Hello! I am so sorry that it took me so long to reply. I do not currently have a video on that process, maybe in the future. But you have already waited long enough :). If you have not already found a solution, I would propose combining the instructions from my video "how to digitize your artwork" to get your watercolor digitiyed, then hop to with videos from @BardotBrush or @BeeJayDeL to understand the repeat pattern piece in Procreate. It is not much different from a fully digital pattern, once you have all your pieces scanned in. I hope that helps!

    Hi Harmony. I love this video and your drawling! I’ve been struggling to make the background transparent, and clean up the scar, in Affinity Photo, after following a course where the teacher uses photoshop. Then I saw this video of your today and I thought it would be easier on Procreate, as I love it! You mentioned Google Drive, so I downloaded that. Well, 4 hours later, I can’t even put the photo into Google Docs, I can’t import it to Google docs, through Google docs, and I can’t send it to Google docs…. I’m about ready to destroy my desktop I’m so frustrated! I can’t even email it to myself and open it on my iPad, where I have Procreate. It’s 4.38pm now, and I’ve been at this all day and haven’t gotten anywhere! - Oh, and I’ve just noticed you haven’t checked on this channel for a year….. Something tells me I’m not going to get this artwork done today…….

    Hello there :) What makes you think I have not checked on the channel in a year? I am paused on creating new videos until late winter/early spring, but I do check in a bad try to answer comments about once a week. Yours seemed more urgent :). I am so sorry you are experiencing such troubles and setbacks trying to get Google Drive up and running, and alternatively emailing the file to yourself. Can you describe what error messages or issues you are encountering? I am no expert, but I can try to help if I know the answer or if I can find a solution online.

    Hiya! I have noticed some artists recently just cutting out the image close to it, i.e. leaving a tiny white border around the shape. Then placing that on a different color background when they are making a pattern. I definitely think this can look beautiful too, and is a stylistic choice you can make as an artist ✅

If that does not resolve it, I would suggest contacting the manufacturer as they often have other suggestions for troubleshooting. Hope it gets cleared up!
