How to Diagnose a Faulty Driveshaft Center Support Bearing

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

How to troubleshoot a faulty driveshaft hanger bearing. So in this particular video I will be using my 1997 BMW 540i as an example, but this diagnosis can be applied to other vehicles with a similar driveshaft setup. Other manufacturers which use hanger bearings and is not limited to is Toyota, Dodge, Mitsubishi, Cadillac, GMC, Chevrolet, Mercedes, etc. A driveshaft hanger bearing, also known as a center support bearing serves the purpose as the name states. In short, it supports the driveshaft. It not only keeps the driveshaft neatly tucked away within the underbody of the vehicle, but it also helps achieve the correctly angles for the universal or constant velocity joints, this vehicle has both in the driveshaft. If the angles are incorrect, this will cause excessive wear on the joints, possible vibrations, and lead to premature failure. The exterior will have a steel frame, next is a rubber damper which keep the driveshaft somewhat floating dealing with the movement from the body, suspension, or drivetrain. And finally the center used a bearing which allows the driveshaft to rotate freely and smoothy. They can fail in a couple different ways, either the rubber eventually cracks which will cause vibrations or in a worst case scenario clunking if it’s badly worn. This can be noticeable at certain speeds or when starting off from a stop in drive or reverse. Besides the rubber being somewhat worn, the bearing was also coming to the end of it’s life too. You can hear some clicking clicking on camera hopefully and you can see it also turned fairly easy. A new bearing should be somewhat stiff when turning. The other way it can fail is the bearing can eventually wear out. A worn bearing will create a clicking or growling noise, depending on how bad it’s worn. A faulty bearing typically starts out as a clicking, eventually growing to a growling sound which can sometimes be felt through the body of the vehicle and the noise will increase with speed as the driveshaft turns faster. Mine wasn’t overly expensive, I didn’t buy one directly from BMW but instead the manufacturer who produces them for BMW. #BMW #BMW5series #autorepair

Hey great video. I just did my rear driveshaft on my 2007 x3 e83 3.0si .. I'm getting a whineing / whistling noise form 25-30 mph when accelerating and decelerating. bad center support bearing.? The driveshaft came with the Quibo and the Center support bearing. Sounds like a Power Steering pump but that's not it. Thanks for any input.

Awesome work, and thank you for doing this. I wonder if you can help me, my e39 is making a clunking noise while accelerating, subsides whem removing foot off pedal, with a slight vibration, nothing serious. The car has automatic transmission, most noticeable first through third gear. I was leaning to a support bearing issue as it shifts smoothly, and makes no noise anywhere near the front of vehicle, the sounds comes strictly from mid car to rear. What is your opinion? Thank you!!

That almost sounds like it could be differential or subframe bushings, I would look at the condition of those first.

Hi, I own chrisler 300c 3.5l with automatic transmission, and I have a problem of impact when I put the gear in R, as if the driveshaft has a free kick, sometimes a blow to the rear of the vehicle when switching speeds, the gearbox is ok, works perfectly. What can be a problem?

yes, if it doesn't change pitch when you whip the car around on the road, otherwise could be a wheel bearing

  • @4DIYers

Depends on the design, quality of components used, etc. If your Cayenne had previous work to the driveshaft area, then it could have been misaligned too.

I have had a Subaru forester 1997 (automatic) from new (approx. 70,000 miles on the clock), that has been great for all the years with very little to do other than annual services. However, recently I have had a lot of vibration & shuddering on the wheels when making slow tight turns (left or right) but never on the straight. It is difficult to identify which wheels the noise or shudder comes from and I don't feel much through the steering wheel. I have had all differentials replace that has reduced the frequency but not eliminated the problem. We hope it isn't the automatic gear box but has anyone got any ideas what to do next.

You may have a failing wheel bearing or cv joint in one of the axles. I do have a video for troubleshooting a faulty wheel bearing. For a cv joint, it may have a ripped boot which allowed in dirt and let grease escape. It won't be the transmission failing.

@@4DIYers SHE LIVES AGAIN!!!!!!…..an interesting item at 3 minutes to 4:40 minutes in the attached video ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/eYRrtqunpJfXaJc.html )..... this was exactly what I experienced with my 1998 Subaru Forester but no-one could diagnose the problem.... £3k was spent/wasted with my Local Subaru dealer trying to fix it... but to no effect. Then I found the attached video link.... and then I found a good mechanic willing to do the work..... and yesterday we got our car back (with new solenoid in the transmission) and she runs great..... Well worth the effort.... these Subaru's can go on forever (almost) George (London, UK)

It's kind of hard to show what a clunking or vibration would feel like on a video. The rubber damper was still in decent condition for this particular vehicle, the bearing was actually faulty but I only found that out until the driveshaft was removed. The bearing wasn't in bad enough shape to show up during a drive. You can hear the noisy bearing when I'm spinning the assembly. The original intent for the drive shaft being removed was for a faulty flex disc.
