Vadim was a absolute master at his craft. Knife, tool sharpening was more like art to him than anything else.

Thanks so much for the video. I got HRC 63 steel to 50 Bess (probably just luck), but have had a hard time trying to get 56-58 HRC steel anywhere below 120. You video explains (I hope) why. I will have to try a hanging strop.

This one made me smile. I know the fishing line is meant to show an ‘everyday’ technique for finding the wire edge, but in most of the camera shots the fishing line is invisible, so you actually look even more magic than usual :)

Watching this, and then thinking about other sharpening videos I've seen where people "whittle" a hair by sweeping it across an edge, I begin to wonder whether, in those cases, they are perhaps actually cutting the hair against "burr," or "wire edge" and not the actual knife edge.

Yes, in most cases. As explained in my Knife Deburring book: "Micro-hardness in the burr root is higher than in the base metal. The enhanced micro-hardness of the burr root allows shaping it into an extremely sharp brittle edge called “wire edge”, sitting on a relatively weaker base. Wire edge is defined as a product of burr honing, when the burr root is shaped into an edge rather than deburred."

Thank you for a really clear instructional video. Is there any way you know of to de-root the burr to that level by hand? Obviously the hanging strop method will only go so far. Maybe consistently raising the angle to the required degree on a flat bench strop? Also, is this removal of burr root in fact producing a very small micro bevel as is achieved in plateau sharpening?

We see the micro-bevel after the hanging strop too. High-angle stropping on a firm strop will round the edge and worsen sharpness, on the firm strop honing must go at the edge angle. In your situation, I'd try the hanging strop with a mix of pure chromium oxide and 0.25-micron diamonds on it.

Another great video - thanks. Question; which side of the strop did you use? Sounded like the rough side. Are your strops available yet? Thanks

Have been greatly enjoying your videos, very informative and I like the scientific approach. However I am curious to know, with the knife in the video as an example, how long would you expect it to retain that level of sharpness in a domestic and commercial setting?

So negative burrs dont flip? Meaning not maluable, and can still be on a microscopic level of small? Do i remove these types of burrs with same angle passes?

Awesome video again vadim. Question: is there an easy way to tell the hardness of the steel. Some knives don't have a brand name to to research the quality and hardness of the steel. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

If you can't find data on the steel, assume that it is 56-58 HRC. Otherwise, you could sharpen it, and test it on a fishing line as shown in the video. Another clue is looking at any chips, since harder steels will tend to chip rather than roll.
