How to Design a Retaining Wall For Beginners

Access my notes and Excel spreadsheet here: payhip.com/b/nN5Ya
In this video I give an introduction to retaining wall design. I go over some of the basics you'll need to know before you get started, I give you a refresher on the relevant geotechnical parameters, then I go through the 3 global stability checks and how to find the design actions in the wall, and finally, at the end of the video I show a resource I made that summarises all this information as well as an excel spreadsheet that automates all of these calculations. Enjoy :)

    If you’ve got access to software that does the design for you, often inputting and setting it up is pretty self explanatory. I think understanding the theory and underlying concepts is what most beginners need first :)

    Thank you for such a detailed explanation! So in theory this is same principle one could follow to design the walls of an in-ground swimming pool? I suppose the water pressure would work in our favor but we need to calculate for the worst case scenario, i.e. an empty pool.

  • @BEngHielscher

    @BEngHielscher

    5 ай бұрын

    My pleasure! Yes, the same theory applies* and you are correct, the worst case for an in-ground pool is when it’s empty. *If you have a long pool where you could consider the wall to be bending one way (cantilever action) then all the same design procedures would be similar to a cantilever retaining wall. However for short pools, the bending in the walls is two ways so considering the bending in these cases to be one way will result in a very uneconomical design.

  • @hugonunes

    @hugonunes

    @@BEngHielscher Thank you Ben! Could you clarify what you mean by two ways bending in short pools? I understand that the wall deflection on a short pool would be limited by the other perpendicular walls close to it, working like a membrane. Is this what you are referring to?

  • @BEngHielscher

    @BEngHielscher

    5 ай бұрын

    I mean that rather than the wall just acting like a cantilever, it would also bend between the two perpendicular walls

We like all your videos and subscribe, we do everything but this money is a lot in India, in return you can provide it for free or for less money if you want.Because I have no knowledge and you explained it very well to me I watch all your videos and learn from them, I just request you to give me the files for free. 🎉
