    Thank you, I just did a refresher course after not touching my Open Water in 10 years and the instructor was shockingly abrupt, rude when I was struggling to descend. You’ve been a massive help thank you ❤

    I am an experienced diver but I still like watching these basic skills videos. People present the information in different ways and there are times little golden nuggets are shared. I am proficient with the back kick but I had never considered it as a decending technique. Great idea! I will give it a go next time out at the local lake.

    Brilliant and I second this opinion that this should be part of the OW course. This is something that comes in handy when you start to dial in your weighting better and discover the old “hard to get started sinking, drop like a rock when you finally get down to about 3 meters” issue. Also, honestly, this is one of the few videos on the subject I’ve found. Subscribed

    Thanks, a very useful short video. Two things from me, if there's an anchor/guide line use it to help you measure and control your descent (recognising that it can be frustrating when the person below you stops to deal with issues (we all do it from time to time!) Be guided by your instructor as to dropping below the obstruction). Other thing, remember to equalise sinus pressure early and repeatedly as you descend.

    Another, non official technique maybe that: 1) deflating bcd 2) breathing out 3) giving a slight push of water upwards using your hands, gives you the boost you need to go a little down. And that would be the last moment you use your hands during your dive. :-)

  • @alaincaspar2148

    Instead of using your hands, use your fins. Start with 3 (with your fins) and when you are up, 2 and 1 together (you might also raise an arm out of the water, that helps to start the descent)

    A good instructor would, BUT the student is taking in a lot of new information, that no doubt is being prioritised by the student and so whether this is remembered by the student is an issue. Instructors often overweight students (mine did) for safety and control purposes, so it would be reasonable to assume that the student does not have a problem sinking. All the major agencies have expressed a desire to move to teaching all skills neutrally bouyant, but I have yet to see this put into practice. If skills were taught neutrally bouyant then overweighting trainees would have to end, but I have a feeling that the groups would need to be smaller and the sessions longer.

    I'm not sure if it's true that you displace more water in horizontal than in vertical. I think the displaced water is equal to the volume of your body and all your gears. So it should be indifferent whether you are horizontal or vertical. However, descending vertical specially at the beginning of your descend before going fully submerged, and particularly if you dive with dry suit with open valve, helps the air from your feet comes up and out and you don't end up with trapped air in your suit when bending knees in horizontal and thus ending with very buoyant feet.

  • @tacul9333

    @tacul9333

    Жыл бұрын

    Definitely. Displacement is the same whether horizontal or vertical. Rather than Archimedes' principle and displacement, the benefit of vertical orientation is that you are disturbing less water when submerging in a vertical position. It's like the difference between a belly flop dive and a well executed dive. Keeping your profile vertical will create less disturbance and less resistance as you descend.

  • @ariaraman

    @ariaraman

    Жыл бұрын

    @@tacul9333 Thanks for the confirmation, and the explanation. However, except at the begining of the dive (for the reason that I explained above) I'm the fan of horizontal decending because I will be more in control of my decend, as I can use the exhaust valve of my wing properly, and also less risk of hitting something with my fins.

  • @tacul9333

    I found with the backplate and wing bcd I cant completely empty the BCD to descend because I end up rolling backwards. When I leave just a little in it and empty my lungs its easier to have a little forward tilt.

    Great video - Back kick at the surface, have not tried this,nwill let you know. You have covered all the major issues except one, and for me (we are all different) it is RELAX, stressed divers at the surface cannot breathe out sufficiently, so for me and my 14 year old we just breathe 3 times in and out, progressively getting more air out of our lungs and hey presto, we sink. Works for us. The issue with kicking is definately an issue for inexperienced divers, point your toes and you will not kick as your brain is engaged, it is the same with breathing get your brain to take over the automatic reflexes and all is good. The only other thing is weighting (only enough air to hover at your 3 or 5 meter stop with empty BC and breathing normally) this gives you an extra 1+kg of sinking fuel at the start of the dive.

    Great video to refresh with thanks. How does changing our orientation from horizontal to vertical affect our water displacement? I thought the idea was to produce less drag in the water.

  • @SCUBAAMY

    @SCUBAAMY

    3 жыл бұрын

    Great question! At the beginning of the dive, we are trying to move 'down' to a certain depth. If we descend 'down' in a horizontal position, we create more water displacement and thus, more drag. The same when we are actually diving at depth, we want to move through the water and so a horizontal position is required for less water displacement in the direction we are going, thus less drag. I hope that made sense!

  • @timgosling6189

    @timgosling6189

    2 жыл бұрын

    Once you are under water your water displacement does actually change with attitude in the water, but only near the surface. The reason is that if you're vertical your legs and feet are subject to more pressure from the water than your torso and BC so they become less buoyant and help you sink. If you are horizontal you don't get that help. However, I think Amy is actually talking about the amount of water that has to get out of your way as you go down, ie drag. That's also less if you are vertical. On the other hand you will be overweighted by about 2kg at the start of your dive because you have a full cylinder. That should be enough to get you going down in whatever position you choose. You can actually go down head first if you like, remembering that all BCs will also have a dump by your hip!
