Great news ... you don't need to throw your foil balloons away at the end of your party! All you need to do is deflate your balloons by letting out the air or helium and you can save them and reuse them for another event.

It sounds like your straw still isn't long enough. The straw has to be long enough to open the end of the valve. If the air isn't coming out, the end of the valve can't be open. Hope this helps.

I wondered whether it would be worthwhile mentioning this to customers and encouraging them to return their foils once they are finished> Also how would you recommend disposing of foil balloons? I was in our neighbour's orchard this morning and found a burst foil in the grass, such a shame.

Hi Andrew. I think it's for individual businesses to decide how to handle this based on their particular circumstances, and there are considerations beyond recycling, such as ease of return and provenance. Eg. easier to return to a shop than to a home-based decorator - I personally don't allow collections from my home. How sure can you be that the returned foil is one you supplied? Not at all easy for a volume business. What do you intend to do with the returned foils? Sell again? You'd need to be upfront with your customers if you're recycling stock in this way and you would need to be certain you'd supplied it in the first place as most UK insurers require you to have purchased from a reputable supplier. So, lots to consider. Foil balloons aren't currently recyclable, but they can be reused in many ways, some of which I recommend to my customers, including wrapping paper and for kids' crafts. You can also reuse them to cover sand weights and I reuse them when I'm experimenting.

I agree. It's important to educate clients about the impact of letting balloons loose. I include a section on all my invoices and delivery notes drawing attention to the need to dispose of balloons responsibly.

​@@BalloonArtworks Now (in Belgium) we can put foil balloons in the "recycle trash", as it is aluminum. BTW, to Andrew, unfortunately some people release foil balloons in the air ; we as professional have to educate those people. But we can't do anything to the people who buy online.... , it is the responsibility of those online shops to educate their customers, but usually Chinese stores (poor quality) don't.... Also sometimes they escape from the hand of children, that's why it is necessary to fix them to the hand.

What happens if you rip the outside where the valve is with the straw a little but it is still keeping the air in. Am I going to be able to air this back up??

You need to push the straw deep into the balloon so that it opens the valve inside. If the balloon isn't deflating, you need to push the straw in further.

You'll need to seal it with an impulse sealer.

A faster easier way to get the air out once the straw is in is to gently sit on the balloon

I keep them for future use and use them in demo pieces or in new designs I'm trying. All you need to do is reinflate them with air or helium, depending on whether or not you need them to float. Great question. Thanks 😊
