How to Decal and Weather Model Railroad Freight Cars
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this video I show you one method for how to decal and weather model railroad freight cars. I make custom graffiti decals and use grime and rust streaks to weather two covered hoppers.

Be sure to watch the companion to this video on Eric Hall's channel, IMRROcom. See the link in the info card near the end of the video. If you want to see more about weathering covered hoppers, check out this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oX-OudWCf6upcrg.html
I’m going to be watching this one without prejudice
Watched both videos. Ron's had the best weathering. Eric used a techique I had not thought of previously. Wrap the entire side of the car. Love them both.
This was fun to see both of you take a shot at this!
Well Ron as usual a great teaching video. It's going to be hard pressed to beat you but now I will go see your compositions video. I'll get back with you.

Ron, just finished watching your friends video. All I'm going to say is that you won hands down. Good to see you again
Ron and Eric, great stuff. Different techniques, different results. But.....both sets are great. You are both winners.
Ron, just finished watching both. While his wrap looks good, you got this one easy with what you did with the car in regards to weathering. Nice job to both of you.
Wow. A whole lotta work just for one car! Weathering seems like a very difficult and time consuming project! The cars turned out great!

Difficulty of weathering depends on what effect you are trying to simulate. For me, I don't weather every car to the same extent. That wouldn't be prototypical anyway. Most of the cars on my layout get a light spray of a fade coat or dullcoat, a bit of rust on the wheels and trucks, and they hit the layout. I refer to this as fleet weathering. A handful of nicely weathered older, rusty, grimy cars scattered over the layout keep things interesting to look at, so a few get this kind of treatment.
WOW!Ron, they look great....thanks for sharing....Jack
Great job, I will be watching this several times. Happy New Year Ron.
Great job on the explanation of the weathering Ron. Happy New Year ! Mike
Very nice man, I like the weathering. great job on the decals.
RON IS THE WINNER I think Ron's cars look better.
Ron, just starting in the hobby. Your videos are very helpful. You're the man!
They look great!
Great Video!! Thanks Ron.
Happy New Year to everyone ,i wish you all the Best for 2020,Mac
Thanks for posting this, even with all the mid-video ads. I just uploaded a video showing how I put decals on open hopper cars and weathered them. It was great to see how you did it.
You nailed it Ron, and not just because you have the coolest name 😎. Where do I cast my vote?
Wow, great job on those hoppers Ron!! I usually use black chalk for the grimy look. When I apply decals I'll use a hair dryer to help it conform to the contours.
Happy New Year, and live long and prosper, IHN.
I've seen both vids Ron, you've got this hands down.
Ron, I also caliper my wheels sets, but have found there always seems to be a variation in the lengths..
Hi Ron , great video, great work
Well I went in with an open mind, because both modelers are awesome, however there is little doubt that Ron won this challenge. I'm just happy to be learning from both of you modelers. Good luck and both of you have a great 2020.
Hey Ron this is Ron D bet ya didn't know that and I have been frosty for seeing something that kicks a something out of the Ballpark Mr. Eric He's totally a frosty dude and did a Great Job on his project but if I had to Give out the Blizzard Treat i give it to Both of you After i sampled just a Taste🤓🍨of it And I got a few in House Pro Secrets from ya.. But what ya shared in the Videos was true Treasure and I will Archive this one for Sure.. And I'll end what a Great way to start off the New Year.! Thank ya Both so Much And you Both stay Frosty.. Allen D.😎
Great video, learned a lot.
In my opinion, you win Ron.
You impressed me with the best technique for decals, would like to make a specific graffiti decal for a boxcar in Ho scale.
Excellent.
Great Job Greet from Germany
YES HE'S BACK!
While I'm against the placement of graffiti (especially on freight cars), I have to admit that it's quite colorful and oddly satisfying to look at.
[thank, you for you're video]👍
Interested!
Hi Ron, I love this channel so much. Random question for you - how do you do your turnouts? Are they manual or do you have switch machines under the layout? I'm planning out a yard right now and about to purchase the track. If at all possible, I'd like to avoid the Atlas turnouts with switches mounted to them, as to me that really ruins the look of the layout, especially at N scale. I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks, and keep up the great work!
Very Nice Video Ron. You and Eric have a great idea here. I enjoyed watching. You going to have the DDWC III this year? I'm hoping to do a little better this time! :-) Brian

Yes, it is in the planning stages now.
I've watched both great weathering videos but can't find a link to the winner.. Help! Thanks for all you both do to build the hobby.
It's hard to compare Apples to Oranges. Loved both videos and will use some of each on my cars. Looks like the Canadian needs to get four more cars because it's a tie!
Those came out great! What kind of printer and paper did you use for the decals?

Watch next Tuesday for a video that shows you every detail of how I made them.
I know you work in "N" and this my not happen for you but I have had yellow and red decals fade into the green paint on the car. Would raising the pixals help stop this " translucent " effect? Nice video on how to thanks. Bob
What can I harden my scenery which I used hydrocal. On ?
Hey Ron I got back into model railroading I am 19 now and the last time I worked on my scenic ridge layout was when I was 13. I cleaned all of the atlas track and it still never works right. What kind of track do you use on your layout because I’m looking to expand mine. And I don’t mind switching from atlas.

I use Peco track because it is rock solid and super reliable.
Looks like the real thing. Off question.. Do they make a box car that has Steam engine and diesel sound built right into it for plain dc trains?
You knocked it out of the park. The other guy, not so much.
I was thinking the other day, as I saw an IRL train, "I wonder if any model RR folks use graffiti to weather their trains."
@RonsTrainsNThings

Yes they do. There are a few vendors who make extensive lines of graffiti decals, and I know a few artistic types who do their own with fine paint pens.
You might have it in the bag but make sure your bag isn't an onion sack. Lol 😂
Hello Ron. I am just starting out and want to know what is the purpose of using form board on the layout and why so thick?

The foam allows you to carve contours in the scenery below track level in a way that is difficult or impossible when laying track directly on plywood. It gives you greater flexibility in your scenery options.

I am not a fan of defacing property that is not yours and don't agree with promoting their disregard for others property .If one wants to Tag, tag your own stuff. Otherwise great video and enjoy watching your work.
