The less intimidating you try to act the less they have to use against you like you becoming aggressive over them interrupting you which just diverts it to them. I find it annoying too but sometimes people just get excited about what they want to say and don't realize what they're doing. In general it's not helpful to be passive aggressive about it in my opinion. Sometimes all it takes is just saying hang on a second and avoid getting too angry at them. Speaking up doesn't necessarily mean starting a fight with them, it just means making your perspective clear.

I'm almost 26 and went my whole childhood and early adulthood around people that spoke over me frequently. It got to a point where it was normal to just not listen to me. Nobody cared what I had to say, ever, but they would still invite me to hang out for whatever reason. Eventually I realized how that gave me severe social anxiety within time, I can not speak in public for the fact my mind would tell "me nobody gives a single shit what you are about to say, so just stay quiet". I stopped replying to and hanging out with everybody in my past life and moved to a new province 2 years ago. It was hard at first leaving my entire life behind, but I believe it was the best decision I could have made. I now have a small circle of people that genuinely care about me and what I have to say as much as I do for them and it is the most wonderful feeling having a voice that's heard for once.

Since your entire environment changed, you no longer fell into the same bullshit social anxiety habits you have developed over the course of your life. You became a different person. Do yourself a favour, when you go back to the same place again, if you ever do. Do not let your old habits take over. Be the person you started being from your new place. And inevitably when you catch yourself doing those old habits, stop it and throw them away immediately. Good luck.

I want to share the other side of this. I have been diagnosed with A.D.D and I am fairly impulsive. I find myself cutting people off in conversations quite a bit. It's quite difficult to keep my inner thoughts to myself when I am having a conversation. It's like my mind has moved on from a certain point or topic and everything I am hearing is not relevant (to me). I have to actually grab my pant leg to stop myself from speaking and remind myself to be patient and hear out the idea, even though I 'feel' as though I already know where it's going. It's a real problem.

I did the same when I was younger, I interrupted even when someone was saying something interesting, because I found it interesting and kind of partook in the conversation, actually often wrongly guessing what they were going to say etc... I don't know when the change happened, but must be because one ex of mine gave feedback, and during many years following that relationship, I became a better listener. First I kind of begun to enjoy the fact that I didn't need to interrupt, so I liked this new me who could be a good listener, and by doing that I genuinely started appreciating others' output in conversations. Then I met that ex of mine one night and noticed a hilarious thing: she interrupted people a lot that night, I didn't. So yes, it's a real problem, but you can face it and change by time. I'm pretty sure I would be diagnosed as ADD or something, but one of my underlying lifeviews is not to believe diagnoses or not get myself a diagnose, especially if it would offer me just an escape route, like "I know what you're saying, but I have alcoholism and ADD, so I can't help my behaviour" or something to that effect. And I would hide behind my diagnose in a second, I know my dirty games. But when not having one, I must actually cope with my problems.

What is worse is when you are patiently waiting for a chance to talk then you can never get a word in as the group is just constantly talking over each other. I really don't understand this sort of people who actually have no idea how to have a civil conversation. I really don't find it hard at all to stop and listen to people talk and respond to them when they're finished. THe funny thing is when people think that no one wants to listen to what they say because they keep getting cut off that they are right. These people only ever care about what they have to say and barely listen to anyone else. The best thing to do is to just not listen to them.

Do you happen to have ADHD? I do and it's a common thing with people who have it. It's hard to be patient or hold onto thoughts, it feels urgent, so we struggle to fully listen to the person and pick up on/wait for their cues. I'm sadly guilty of this but working on it. Controlling the symptoms in general seems like the most important factor. If there's a reason you're doing it, you won't be able to change that without knowing why, you know? I just figured maybe that might help. I always thought I was difficult and selfish and unstable, turned out there were other things effecting my ability to do it, or I would have done it sooner, obviously. But once you know better you're able to do better, beating yourself up for not being perfect is pointless, realizing things like this and turning them around is what's most important. We all have our things anyway.

It's obvious that he knows a lot, but it's also very obvious that he loves to hear himself talk. The structure and delivery of his some of his talks sounds like he's narrating for "Cosmos." It's very disingenuous... like he's trying to create a good soundbite. I like Tyson, when he's by himself or in a Q&A, but during podcasts and interviews he can be obnoxious and overbearing.
