Hi Derek. Thanks for your great video, probably the only one on the net that explains how to correctly daisy chain two of these suckers and still get discrete zero latency monitoring. For all those people questioning why you need the spdif cable well as Derek said it's to send the audio from one unit directly to the other without going through your computer DAW. I was having all sorts of dramas as it doesn't tell you anywhere in the literature that once you link two units together the little z you click for zero latency monitoring no longer shows up and the only way to achieve it is via the universal controller! For those who need a more detailed explanation you achieve zero latency monitoring while recording by sending the output from the first firestudio's 8 channels to the second firestudio via the spdif out and into the spdif in on the second unit. You have to set up the universal controller to send and receive this signal via the spdif. You can now monitor all the inputs from both firestudios via the one set of outs on the second unit without any signal delay (just make sure the DAW signal is off as Derek explains). One other useful tip if you are still hearing double thru the headphones is to mute the channel you are recording in the DAW so as only to hear the direct output from the firestudio. If you don't need to monitor while recording then it is quite true that you do not need to bother with the spdif connection as the firewire cables do indeed handle all the recorded information. I watched this video plus many others several times before I understood how to do this so I hope this further information benefits anyone still scratching their heads. Of course with most modern computers your processor should be able to cope with a pretty low buffer rate which will reduce the latency thru the daw to a minimum anyway so this may not be necessary! Thanks again Derek for making this video.

Thanks for the info. I found this text in the Firestudio manual: PreSonus supports the connection of up to four devices or a limit of 52 inputs and outputs (whichever comes first) to any one system at a time. However, the ability to use more than two units simultaneously depends on your computer’s specifications and optimization. If you plan to use 3 or more units at the same time, installation of a dedicated FireWire bus with a tested and approved FireWire chipset and at least 2 GB of RAM is highly recommended. A list of approved chipsets can be found in Section 5.1 of this manual. Updated lists are available at www.presonus.com.

Just received a 2nd unit FireStudio Project. I have the two FSPs synced but I'm not sure why SONAR 8 doesn't recognize all input channels. Any ideas how I can resolve this? Btw, you're the only soul on KZread with a video of how to daisy chain these units. You're a savior bro!

Greetings :-) I am SOOO excited that I just purchased a second FSP and while I'm waiting on it to arrive, I wanted to find out what I need in order to "daisy chain" them and record using all 16 inputs simultaneously. Your video was VERY informative and I am grateful you took time to post it. I have few questions that I will all in the next comment as I ran out of room on this post :-)

This can be done an alternate way: Wiring is the same as mentioned in video above, but instead using Mac OSX's built in software: Audio Midi Setup, you can create an aggregate audio device that allows mac to see both sound cards as one combined interface. Here are instructions: support.native-instruments.com/hc/en-us/articles/210295425-How-Can-I-Create-an-Aggregate-Device-OS-X- This is how I have a presonus firestudio project working along side a presonus firepod and my mac sees them as a single device with 20 ins and 20 outs.

I had to also put a digital audio cable from the S/PDIF "out" on FSP #1 to the "in" on FSP#2 to get all of the input channels to monitor through the headphones that I have connected into the back of the units. One Problem left....I have the monitors connected to the FSP#1 going to my Mac. I can play music from internet stations like "Pandora" or "KZread". However, I cannot get playback through the monitors from GarageBand? Any thoughts here? My Audio Midi Setup shows PreSonus FireStudio. Clock Source: "Internal" (Should this be SPDIF?) Output Stream 1 Input Stream 1 Thanks! Gina

cheers champ your a legend, i have a presonus firestudio project 8 track and a firestudio mobile 2 track, so i gather they will daisy chain also ? both have spdif so will give it a go. also i have two jbl exp612.1000watt self powered speakers that i run out of the main out like you would run the monitors but im trying to figure out how to incorporate a jbl sub, could i run the two 1000 s of the first card and the 2000 watt sub out of the other card ? would that work ? as im guessing you have those firestudio projects hooked up to a sub ? somehow. do both cards power speakers once daisy chained ? so i could power the sub with one card and the speakers with the other ?

Dunno why you did the Spdif connection if the Firestudio handles daisychaining throughout firewire. My rig is working without an Spdif connection. The problem could be the firewirechip, wich maybe is incompatible with yours. Chips like from Texas Instruments would do the trick well. (there is actually an compatibility sheet with the desired firewire chipsets.) Second, always fire up the master Firestudio and then the second and if you running more then those in the logical order. (The master is the one wich the firestudio software recognize as '1'. the next one (slave) '2,3,4' etc.)

According to the manual, you can daisy-chain up to 4 Firestudio-family devices (not just the FS Project!), for up to 52 inputs/outputs, depending on which units you use.

You should be able to use both firewire ports together at the same time. I cant really explain how you would adjust your settings because my set up only uses 1 port, but I'm sure its not hard to figure out. You should be able to make these adjustments in either your sound settings (input section) or from your settings in your recording software.

This is interesting, according to Presonus - all Firestudio interfaces should be compatible with one another. I have the Firestudio Tube, and it has no SPDIF, only firewire ports. I'm about to buy a second one to test this, but it shouldn't require that SPDIF connection. It should only require firewire to use 2 interfaces at once.

  • @jouebien

the USB Presonus interfaces only allow you to use one at a time. If you have two it will lock out the second one from being used. The firewire ones will work together with the same Presonus unit (two of the same kind) and other Presonus fire wire units (two to four+ of mixed firewire units of various sques ).

" thats all you do... just cut over there somewhere and then just a doohicky somewhere... i dont remember".... I am here to resurrect my studio.... and PreSonus has ended support and cut links to drivers in an effort to make us trash (otherwise) perfectly usable interfaces... so that we will buy new ones.... but the last thing I will do is buy from the company that (in effect) sabotages their own products/ FORCES them into obsolescence ... so that we will fork out more money.
