My experience is that there is a great loss of gel coat in the high ridges that is sanded down. Try getting a long piece of cellophane that's as wide and long as the area that you're working on, and [using a friend], stretch it out the length of the freshly applied gel coat and allow it to bond with the gel coat at the center and slowly lay it into the gel coat until it reaches the ends so air is not trapped inside. You can not shift the cellophane after contact or a mess will happen. After running a straight edge over the cellophane lightly the gel coat will be absolutely flat so sanding off the cellophane is a snap, with almost no gel coat loss.

Great educational video mate. I bought a 1980 Jeep CJ5 about 2 years ago. It has a fiberglass tub/body & has a jelcoat (white) finish that they painted a blue automotive paint. My question to you all is this: Would it be easier to strip the paint off & jelcoat it or can I just shoot another layer of auto paint over it? I'm leaning towards striping the old paint off & shooting a nice jelcoat on it. What's your thoughts on it?

Mine has gel coat and have no clue as to if gel coat can be applied over the top of original gel coat or will I have to sand down to fiberglass? I would rally like to be able to use gel coat on my sailboat but if it has to be taken all the way down to fiberglass may just end up painting with the alexseal system and their new additive to roll the paint on.
