    This worked like a charm. I used my Ryobi +18v small saw with a high tooth carbide blade. Setup a guide fence, cut halfway through each time and the job I've put off for a year is done. I can see that a wrap around sweep at the bottom would be a good finish but it''s solid foam inside so there's no weakness in the door. Subscribed.

    The first half of the kzread.infoUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.

    Certainly no arguing with a good steel cutting blade. I've had to cut a steel door off and only had a nice fine tooth carbide, yep, it did work, but the blade is pretty much sacrificial. Great tip, John.

    This is not a commercial door, which, when cut would be re-cored and welded. On this type of door I suspect the "J " shaped edge of the steel skin not only held the skin tight to the wood bottom rail, but also added rigidity across the width of the door bottom. Now that you've cut it off, I think you've significantly increased the probability that the door skin will tend to delaminate, especially if not used gently, and if the (paint?) coating along the seam isn't maintained.

    If it is carbide tipped then it should do just fine. That's what I just did and it worked perfectly. Be careful of the bits of metal that are going to fly off! Wear full eye protection and gloves to shield yourself from the millions of little metal chips.

    I would also like to see how you would do a narrowing of this door. Depending on the amount of such a cut, it may require taking off the skin, shortening some of the boards inside, and putting it all back together when a mere slicing off of one side is not possible or would render the door unhingeable.

  • @andrewssd

    What was your purpose of only cutting halfway on each side instead of all the way through with the first cut?

  • @weemeemoo

    @weemeemoo

    2 жыл бұрын

    My guess: to go easier on the blade and avoid overheating, because there's a layer of steel on each side of the door, while the core inside is wood/foam/etc. Cutting through the whole door would mean going through two layers of steel at once. Edit: someone who's more experienced made a comment about this, too

    Doing it that way prevents splintering on the exit cut. It's important to do it this way when dealing with a metal door because if you blow out the metal sheathing on the other side of the door it is next to impossible to repair and make it look right again.

  • @klpittman1

    @klpittman1

    With a circular saw the blade is attacking the work from bottom to top. The exit cut is therefore the top.

    Why set up the fence twice and not just cut it once?

  • @IBuildItHome

    @IBuildItHome

    5 жыл бұрын

    Probably the best answer to that would be to ask if the last time you tried to rush something important, to save a few seconds, was the result better or worse? The blade is cutting through the steel skin, along with the wood underneath. It's better to cut metal with less of the blade sticking down, as it's less likely to hook it and pull it up.
