I'm definitely an opera singer who loves singing showtunes in the car (and elsewhere)! And for the longest time, I couldn't understand why I wasn't getting cast in musical theatre, when I thought I sang so much "prettier" than everyone else...! Eventually I figured out a few things about what's required in order to be cast in Opera vs. Musical Theatre. I hope these tips help you too! Love this video! I’m not an opera singer but the comment about singing something that shows you’re right for the character and not necessarily the prettiest song really resonates with me. I’ve been battling myself with that. I always want to sound good, but never at the expense of my character development. It’s a hard balance for me for sure.

I'm SO glad this was also helpful for someone who sings in a different genre. Thank you for the feedback! It's really easy to be distracted by how we sound and wanting to "sound good." But when I pay attention at this level to my favorite singers, they are far more invested in being a channel for the character than in making beautiful sounds.

Expert advice as always. I especially thought #3 was a very clear and useful breakdown of what musical theatre and opera each value and how that creates the distinction in sound and expression between the two.
