    This is a wonderful tutorial -- thank you so much! I just made this hat (my photo is of me wearing it). I used "Bernat Handicrafter cotton yarn," size 4 medium. I had to reduce the number of rows to adjust for the weight difference, and I only made two rows for the rim -- but the yarn is stiff enough to allow the rim to stand out horizontally, which I love. I'm making another one today for my daughter.

    Instead of starching the brim to stiffen, I went online to a haberdashery site and found clear nylon line. Similar to weed eater line but stiffer. Single crochet twice in the same space around the line to hide. I've made three of these. Really like this pattern.

    Vea Perl You encase the nylon like you would rope when making a basket. You can use thin rope instead of nylon. It will give you a more ridged edge than just yarn, but one that is also flexible.

    You crochet around the nylon just in the last row. I’ve seen KZread videos where people use wire. I like the nylon better. Crochet around the same row a second time to hide the nylon.

    Could you tell me how you shaped and stiffened your hat? Should I shape crown of hat by putting on a blown up balloon and spray with water? Do I stiffen the entire hat or only the brim? Loved making it. Anxious to finish

  • @InterUnet

    @InterUnet

    9 жыл бұрын

    Heather Griffin Hi Heather Griffin, Thanks for the good question. Yes, to shape the hat you may use a balloon. I used my old cap to shape the crown that I do not wear anymore. I stiffened the entire hat, but you may make only the hat's brim rigid as desired. After you apply the fabric stiffener, you may just air dry it. I used a hair dryer to dry the hat faster.

    avadaniandreea Hi avadaniandreea, Thanks for the good question. The hat's size is S/M. So, I would advise you to crochet about 7 increase rounds and then decide whether you need to crochet 8th increase round or not, depending on your gauge/tension and head circumference. After that crochet dc rounds without increasing chains up to the brim point. Happy crochet!
