    Maybe it's because I'm a beginner, but I just can't tell what I'm looking at with this thick yarn. Luckily I'm doing fine so far, just watched to see if you do something different & I just honestly can't even tell. Looks like it helped a lot people, as I see in the comments, so good job.

    I have had to trash so many sweaters and I couldn’t for the life of me understand why it kept going wide. the other videos I’ve watched did not explain properly. I understood I was adding a stitch at the end of the row but from the way others explained I thought I was adding into the cast itself not that the cast was the stitch. Thank you so much!! Very clear and concise video that explained every aspect of why this occurred and how to prevent it. You saved me one more headache

    For the first time, after making more than a dozen scarves, I made one with straight sides, both sides, and I am over the moon happy with it. I have 5 more to make for Christmas gifts and as long as the others turn out as good as this one did, I will never change how I make them. I'm using HDCs, I put a stitch at the end, chain one and turn. I then make a HDC in that first stitch that you are saying not to use. So either I'm misunderstanding you or it depends on the stitch you're using. (SC, HDC, or DC)

    Sometimes, I can't get a straight edge this way. Sometimes I can't get it the other way. Everyone's tension and little crochet quirks alters their work so if you're having trouble one way with wonky edges, try the other way 🤷 Do a small swatch one way and a small swatch the other way and see what works for you, what makes you proud of your work.

    I understand what you’re saying and the concept but having trouble distinguishing the V because of the super textured chunky yarn you’re using. Following pattern, designer says nothing about chain 1 counting as a stitch - just stitch count throughout. (Ch 61!p, then sc second ch from hook = 60. Always thought turning chain does NOT count as stitch. However, I like the no gap doing it your way so I guess I should count it as one of my 60 sc. Plain light color yarn always best for videos. In the meantime, am testing it out on a swatch so I can see the Vs..... thanks for video. Much appreciated.

  • @YHNFiberCo

    @YHNFiberCo

    Some designers count the initial CH as a stitch and others do not. I usually leave it up to the maker. If you like the look then use it as a stitch and if not do the CH called for in the pattern but then place the stitch you’re meant to do into the CH space. ☺️

    Some patterns call for a stitch in the CH 1 (2, 3 etc) at the beginning of the rows. But other times the CHs at the beginning count as stitches. That being said, you are likely taking a stitch away at the beginning of each row or you’re forgetting to crochet in the CH 1 of the previous row assuming that is an actual stitch on the pattern you’re following.

    I tried this on a chunky blanket yarn and a frogged it over and over and over again until finally went into that first - already utilized stitch - and now all the edges are straight. I'm so confused as to why this is the case. I'm rather new to crocheting so I'm trying to follow the rules and have drowned in video after video trying to get it right so I am clueless as to why the "wrong way" is working when it shouldn't.

  • @YHNFiberCo

    It could possibly have something to do with tension. Perhaps the strength you use when making your stitches isn’t effecting the stitches as much when you place your first stitch in that space. Just a theory though. If you have found something that gives crisp, straight edges, then keep doing it! 🙌🏻
