taylor, I wish I could sit down with you and teach you how to make the slip stitch because I learned if when I was 7 or 8. I learned from a classmate who wanted to show me a magic trick. He made what looked like a solid knot to me, but then he gave a pull from each end the knot was no longer there. It wasn't really a knot to begin with, but it is what you need to start any crochet project. Taking ahold of your yarn with your left hand, let about 6" dangle below your left hand while you are pinching it with your left thumb and index finger. With your right hand, you will bring about 4" of the yarn that is part of the skein, and make a circle by pinching that yarn together with the loose yarn that is pinched between your left index finger and thumb. When you do that, you continue by using your right index finger to shove the yarn right through that circle. NOW you need your hook. Bring your hook straight through, leaving the circle below it and the little piece you pushed through above the hook. Now that the yarn is on the hook, let go of everything that your left hand is doing, use it to grab the 2 sections of yarn that createdd the bigger circle and pull it all snug to your hook. THAT is your slip stitch. Practice a few times, actually quite a few times, it takes time to master. Once you get that slip stitch in place, you are ready to make a chain. I hope this helps get you started.

@@toadstools08 You are welcome taylor. I hope things eventually fall in place for you because I remember way back about 32 years ago when I was in tears over a pattern that I didn't even understand. There was no internet, and certainly no KZread, so you had to find someone to rely on for help. I'm working on some small and easy things right now, things to donate to a children's hospital. Baby beanies and bookworms. I got the pattern for that from my sister-in-law. She was a teacher and every year she made one for each of her students, so I'm trying to do something like "pay it forward", but with the pandemic, I have all of my completed projects in special bags for the washing machine and hope to bring them a massive bag some day to give to the kids depending on their ages. When I get tired of these, I'm going to make caps for people who have lost their hair thanks to chemo. Try to keep following this lady, she knows what she's talking about! Good luck!!

I’m finding the slipknot’s loop has to be somewhat big to move the loop on the hook thru it, but not too big that your chain is loose and messy. The other thing is you have to keep a firm grip on slipknot, or else it’ll slide up and down. It seems the tighter the yarn is around the hook, the easier it is to loop it thru the slipknot.

To do so click the little Gidget tool in the top right-hand corner, and the options for playback speed to pop up in the drop-down menu. Yes! I'm so glad you made this video, because I was having a hard time figuring out how to make the chain. I have been watching tutorials on how to crochet for months, and I finally bought a starter set of hooks and a small amount of cotton yarn, but I couldn't get started. Sometimes in tutorials people have their own unique ways of holding yarn and making a chain, and I couldn't do it like them. The way you do it, though, is so much easier! I thought the video was great. I had to stop it once and rewatch, but that's going to happen if you are learning. I could already make a chain after your demonstration. I'm going to keep practicing like you said, and try to get a good even chain, but you have done a great job at helping me find how to wrap the yarn easily around the hook and chain. Thank you forever!

Depending on what you're doing, you might actually want a bigger hook than thread. So if your yarn is size 3, get a size 4 a.k.a. 4mm hook. It'll be easier to hook the yarn and the holes will only be slightly bigger but not enough to matter (I know it's a necro post but for anyone who needs help, there you go. Some people even like to go 2 sizes above the yarn size)

I have a thought on working on a chain. I'm making a project that I start out with a chain of 90. Fortunately, it doesn't have to be pretty when it comes down to it. I've done this many times, and if I were going to have to show it, it's not perfect, but it is hidden, and for most projects it is hidden, it's just an anchor for the project. Don't worry if your chains appear to curl as you go, if you run your thumb and index finger gently down the chain, it straightens out, but with a chain this long, you can see where you might have made one too tight or too loose, so that's just another thought if you're struggling. I've been there.

Tip for beginners: when I first started learning to crochet, I used fairly small yarn, and I've since realized that usually if you start out with bigger yarn (not absolutely huge but just a small amount bigger), it's so much easier to practice with! Everyone has a different experience when learning how to do new things like crocheting, knitting, sewing, etc., so just keep in mind that not everything works for everyone. Experiment with different crochet yarn (sizes, material, etc.), and see what works best for you!

I finally figured out what I have been doing wrong! I've been holding the yarn so tightly in my left hand that the loops got too tight and I had to struggle to get the needle through. I loosened it up and now I can make it much faster and the spaces are the same throughout the whole chain.

Today is my first day learning so let me see if I can give some tips. Slip not. I found an easy way. 1) Make a loop the end of the thread should be on the right. Take your index finger on your right hand the one that is not holding the loop and grasp the middle of the loop. make sure to grasp over not under. Once you grab the loop switch it. Then insert your thumb into the loop. Once your thumb and index is in the loop grab the thread that is connected to the wool and pull Then attach your hook and pull until a little loop is formed.

I totally see the reason for your left finger holding the tension on the yarn. Watching your video closely, I discovered how to pull a loop through, pull it down to tighten the previous loop, and then grab a new loop and pull it through, repeat. Thank you for that! So I can pretty much make a long chain, on to the next step!

Does anyone here know someone who crochets??? Everyone is making this so much harder than it has to be. You can't start any crochet project without first doing the slip knot that should be on your hook. Do you remember back in elementary school when someone would take a string, make a "knot", then pull from both ends, making the knot magically disappear? That is a slip stitch. You can create that knot on your finger using your thumbs and index fingers. Leave an opening that your hook can fit through easily. Then pull gently to get that slip stitch a little loose on your hook. Each chain following that should be that loose. When you are learning, just keep making that chain until you find that you can stick your hook through easily and that every chain looks the same. You don't need to use a lot of yarn, you can tear out that chain and start again, same way. Eventually you will find that your chains will be the same size and you can move on to the single crochet. I haven't crocheted my entire life, but long enough to know if I'm happy or not as I look at what I've worked on. When I'm not happy, sometimes I have to go back, tearing out stitches to get back to where I made the mistake and start over at that point. I hate having to do it, but if I don't, it's not going to turn out pretty. I'm just trying to help anyone keep from having a meltdown like I've had more than a few times. It takes time to learn it and do it well, but it can be done. Good luck!!

Ive been off and on learning for like 2 years (In total have probably only spent an hour or two really trying to learn anything) and I actually thought this chain was called a single crochet. which makes since as its a single line haha but I now know this is called a chain and I know the different between a chain and single crochet lol. I can do both and Im a little excited. I've been a few squares before just following instinct so they weren't technically done correct but they're fun to do and it helps to get use to it. Now I should learn the proper techniques I guess
