No one size fits all approach exists to worldbuilding. What is important is to make the map consistent with the themes and aesthetics of the narrative* you're trying to tell through the world. *narrative not meaning traditional story. Settings themselves are a type of narrative, and even the act of framing certain things in particular ways creates themes

I would agree, the best way to world build is to have a map and to fill in place by place what’s occupying the land you have generated previously. It makes the worldbuilding feel more natural and less constructed, even though it is constructed. It goes a long way to helping readers and players feel like the world is a real place and not something made up by some person, even though we logically know it is it creates a sense of belief in the reality of the secondary world that is hard to achieve from building the map as you expand it.

As the night goes on, the infectious energy of the Shrek rave seems to have a mind of its own. It's said that even eman4480, the most elusive party pooper in all the land, couldn't resist the allure of the neon-lit swamp. Try as eman4480 might to resist the call of the epic dance floor, the rhythm of the music and the joyous laughter of Shrek and his friends simply would not leave eman4480 alone. Before long, even eman4480 finds themselves caught up in the magic of the Shrek rave, dancing the night away alongside the ogres, fairy tale creatures, and all the party animals of Far Far Away.

When it comes to making maps, one crucially important detail that is often overlooked is the fact that the cartographers in a technologically pre-modern setting will make highly inaccurate maps. We see this in our own world, with the maps of Herodotus, Plato, and Eratosthenes even making errors in the mapping of well-known lands such as Greece and Italy. Thus, if you want a map to feel truly natural within your setting, it should be made from the perspective of a cartographer living in that world, with the actual/realistic map serving as a basis for what such a natural map would look like.

12:50 The bit about the importance and flexibility of maps reminded me of the way Earthsea was developed by Ursula K. Le Guin. When she was asked to write a young adult fantasy series, the first thing she did was get out a massive blank sheet and start drawing islands. I highly recommend the series for worldbuilders, especially reading every foreword, afterword, author's note, etc. Le Guin reveals a lot about her creative process and growth as a writer in the meta texts and gives valuable insights about her loose style of worldbuilding. The most interesting thing she talks about is how she views the world of Earthsea not as a place she creates, but one she visits. There are hundreds of islands in Earthsea, and she only ever visits a few. She doesn't see unvisited islands as "unfinished", but a place which has yet to reveal itself to her. TL;DR, read Earthsea

The MLP grimdark ashpunk part got a chuckle out of me. Bcause I've done essentially that in the past. I wrote an MLP fanfic that took the characters though a post apocalyptic alternate universe where the sky is filled with smoke and everything is covered with ash. I later revised it, taking ot out of the MLP universe and building my own world around the story that I had created. Ive been working on that world ever since. Writing stories across both alternate universes and several different time periods. Spanning from the bronze age up to the industrial revolution of the world.

I personally find the process of outlining the world map gives me a really nice constraint for creativity and often allows for the generation of interesting ideas based on the physicality of the world. I definitely think the detailing and actual world building should be focused on one small section at a time, but I find that having a physical "canvas" of what the different physical places in the world are like is a really useful starting point.

I recently started worldbuilding for my next campaign. I started with a story idea and drew the map around that idea, I really like what I came up with! The basic idea is that a catastrophic war took place and as a means to end the war, a coven of powerful geomancers erected massive walls to separate the continents and to quell the war. Their plan didn’t work at first as it just reduced the conflict from a world war to many wars on different continents. Eventually, the two sides grew exhausted of the constant conflict and decided to sign peace treaties to end the war. The Campaign goal is to find the Geomancers and get them to destroy the walls to help unite the world in peace times once again

Currently making maps for a friend’s TTRPG game. It’s somewhat more realistic than most TTRPGs, with an in-depth combat system, so I wanted to do a realistic map. I started with a few random fault lines, put mountain ranges along some, then mapped where the warm and cool currents would be. The interplay between geography and those currents will largely decide climates and biome placement. I’m hoping he’ll appreciate the in-depth map, and that future nerdy players might notice and enjoy the realism.

I'm not planning on doing a full continent, just a few nearby countries but this is still helpful. The two main lands that I am using are actually from Minecraft worlds I use to play but are going to be changed a lot (scale, placement of things, population centers/density, and key features)

I thought it was worldbuildin and God I was wrong. The great Guru Stoney has dissolved any free will. The endless Cheese Soup recipes, the nights of Spicy Potat... I have forgotten my last name... The oven is burning and shifts never end. The misery. PS Its all perfect. STONEY THE BEST. WE TOTALLY LOVE HIM. NOT LOOKING TO ESCAPE. REALLY! (Would sell my soul for an apple... oh I miss the good old days..)

I do have to say, Stoney- once you said from the very beginning that your channel has always just been worldbuilding and roleplay; Stoney, we all remember what you used to do, don't you too? If you don't- I guess you can claim insanity in the court case to come up soon. See you soon, Stoney, and to the best of luck trying to get the police off of your tail; they already got me!

Liver failure can usually be solved by quitting drinking the sauce, or cutting out carbs. Pretty simple(not easy), I'm sure their's a world building arch in there.
