I took two years of art history and had a 45 year career in art and design. I find analysis of artwork interesting. We like to think we can figure out what the artist had in mind when creating his or her art and composition. But do we really know, and are we giving the artist more credit than he or she deserves? I was on a tour thru a number of galleries in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. Near the end as the guide was pontificating over the artist’s intentions, he admitted that no one can be sure what the artist was thinking, and to summarize, how our viewpoint may be more valid than his(the tour guide). I never forgot that admission.

This series of videos on composition are well thought out and simply presented. Excellent!

I just love your approach to composition. I taught composition with the same premise you use until I moved to Germany. The more I got into composition, I turned to using the square. Now all my compositions are based on the square to change it to a dynamic composition.

Working like that with a constraint, of a square, is really a good exercise in understanding the dynamics of what is happening on a picture plane. I got your email about having taught at Otis. Very best wishes to you in Germany.

Hi Scott, I will get to temperature. It's an important one. The major exception of know of is cool northern light creates warm shadows. If you have a room with one north light source and put a white table cloth down and an object on that table you can see how the shadow has a warm cast. I don't do still lifes (lives?) with north light source so never really deal with it. I am glad you are enjoying the videos and letting me know. All the best for 2020, Ian

Thank you Ian. I cannot get enough of the analysis of the roadmaps in paintings and photographs which lead to paintings. Looking forward to the edge work and colour ideas also tho'. I am going to take out my book on Vermeer and have another look at these paintings that I have loved and now understand a bit more of the why. Merry Christmas to you and yours.

Ian, thank you for this! I am very interested in how placement, etc., effects the format or picture plane. I am both a graphic designer and a landscape painting student. I always filter your instruction into how it may apply and inform my graphic design, as well. Your example of placement in the square vs. the landscape formats is most helpful to me and ideas about tension. In graphic design, the portrait format and something you hold in your hands is the most dominant formats, so I'm translating to that. I am also not sure if I've heard you teach about the vertical placement of objects. In landscape painting, by convention, down is closer to us, and up is further away, so I can see that's at play in terms of vertical placement. Thank you.

You use oil or acrylic?

I have hard time fitting my shapes in the compositional hotspots so that particular Andrew wyeth painting was an eye opener, and like Central Okanagan FCA below, iI too, would like to see how you decide your format -, I know sometimes several would work, so does it get down to more of creating a mood, a sense of mystery, a feeling? even after having your book and dvd's.......... I'd like to know. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Hi Loretta, this is a good suggestion for a weekly topic. Thanks. I will say creating a mood, or mystery is all fine and well but in the end I have chosen two or three sizes and stick to them for the practical reason of the cost of frames and I have way too many odd shaped frames I never had another painting for. Not a very romantic notion but practical. But format is important and I will address it one week. All the best for 2020, Ian

Very helpful Ian,thank you. I remember reading or seeing somewhere that in a square photograph if the subject is bang in the middle, then it is a good composition. Does the same hold true for square canvases?

I'd say you genereally (but not a hard and fast never) don't want the center of interest in the middle because it's the most static place on your picture plane

Hi Ian. Thanks again for a very useful video. I’d like to know more about scaling up a study and how that can affect composition. How something that works on a small scale needs to change on a larger scale, what to consider. I’m thinking about the difference between small scale and human size and how that changes the viewers experience. 🙏🏾
