To archive this shape you can choose a cube as your base geometry. you can choose a plane instead of a cube, however, I think a cube will be easier for your process.
The important thing is how to put the cuts on the faces. Because This cut will define the overall final shape. Don't worry. This tutorial shows you how to make it easier and more accurate.
By following these steps, you can create shape a similar as what you see in the thumbnail, however, some techniques will be different according to what 3D software you are using. As you see I didn't convert the N-gons to the quads, you can do it as you do. I want to show you how to work with shapes like this.
