    Hi Dave. Great video.. I've made shape based on your flower petal image.. When in resize it to make it bigger it changes the shape entirely as if i'm using the direct selection tool. I'm a noob when it comes to illustrator. I've rasterized the image just so i can resize it as its going to be sat behind some text in a logo i'm creating that will go to print.. Obviously though i shouldn't have to do this as when i previously had a play i used the hexgon shape you made and when i resize this it resizes accordingly unlike the flower petal one.. as you can imagine this is rather frustrating.. any help would be greatfully appreciated.. thanks callum

  • @davewatkinscreative

    @davewatkinscreative

    Hey Callum. Thanks for checking out the video. Based on what you're describing the rounded corners you created are not scaling, which changes the appearance of your paths. If you select an object and go to the object menu > Transform > Scale, there will be an option box called "scale corners". If you check that off any shape that you scale afterwards that has a rounded corner should retain the appearance you were hoping for. One more thing to consider if you're using this element as a logo that you will be distributing to other people. It would be ideal if you outline the strokes (object>path>outline stroke) and unite all the paths together in one compound path using the pathfinder palette. This will ensure that your logo remains consistent and isn't changed accidentally by others. Hope that works for you! Let me know if you need any other help.

    Hey I enjoyed this video very much but I ran into an issue when I highlight the entire shape and use the direct selection tool it only works for rounding one corner, so then I used effect -> stylize-> round corners but it does not let me make them circles. Any advice on how to fix this so that I can manually round all corners at once?

  • @davewatkinscreative

    @davewatkinscreative

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Melissa. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I'm sorry you've run into issues with the live corners in Illustrator. Without seeing your file it's a bit difficult to know exactly what's going on but I'll explain two issues I've come across that might help solve your problem. One issue that sometimes pops up for me is the total number of corners selected at once. Individually all of the corner handles appear and can be rounded with the direct selection tool but when the entire shape is selected the corners don't appear at all. I don't know exactly what the number of useable handles is at once but this is an issue I only run into with complex shapes with a lot of corners. The second issue that I have run into is where the corners in question are too small to be rounded by illustrator at all. This can happen because the size of your artwork is too small, or because there are extra points along the path that fall extremely close to the corner that you'd like to round off. Let me know if either of these issues sound like what you're running into. Cheers!

    Have been exploring this alot. Made some cool shapes and art so far. I'm trying to do the technique in the 2nd part of the video. I modeled a shape exactly like yours and pasted it over a photo as a smart object. I follow the procedure to a T but when i try and click inside smaller areas within the shape w the wand for some reason it only selects the entire shape and not the individual lined out areas.... does it have something to do with how you layered the original polygon shapes? • @davewatkinscreative

    @davewatkinscreative

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi Myecha - My guess based on what you're describing is that your first hexagon wasn't selected when you started using the rotate function. With no object selected, the copy function in the rotate dialog box will not have any effect on your design. After creating your hexagon, by default it should be selected. With the hexagon still selected you can press R on your keyboard for the rotate tool, then hold down the alt key and click somewhere off center of your shape to alter the center point of your rotation. From there you should be able to use the copy function to create the same effect in the video.

    How did you lock the guide without me noticing? When i use guides, i started selecting them by accident when i selected the shape and started copying and rotating the guides. Is there an auto lock or something?

  • @davewatkinscreative

    @davewatkinscreative

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey James - In illustrator if you had your guides unlocked at some point and then quit, the next time you started up the guides would remain unlocked. Even in a new document. Because I almost never work with my guides unlocked I didn't even think to mention this feature. You can lock your guides by going to View > Guides > Un/Lock Guides. Or you could use the key command CMD + OPT + ; to do the same thing. Once you have locked your guides and restarted Illustrator, the next time you start working, any guides you create should start out automatically locked. Another option that I use in my latest Ornate Mandala tutorial is where you create all of your guides on a separate layer and name it guides. You can then use the lock symbol in the layer palette to ensure that nothing moves and no other artwork gets mixed in with your guides. Let me know if that helps! Dave

  • @davewatkinscreative

    @davewatkinscreative

    2 жыл бұрын

    Do you mean as you make copies of your shapes they're hiding the shapes that are beneath them in the layer order? If so - that means you'll want to set the fill of your objects to none so only the strokes are visible and your shapes aren't being hidden by objects stacked on top. In the colour palette the option for having no fill will look like a white square with a red line through it on an angle. Hope that helps :)

  • @davewatkinscreative

    @davewatkinscreative

    3 жыл бұрын

    The windows key command for "Transform Again" is Control + D and it should repeat the previously executed transformation. Did you copy the object first and then rotate it in a second step? If so the transform again command would only repeat the transformation and not the copying of the path. For these radial designs be sure to use the rotate dialog box and click copy at the bottom. Then use the transform again function to create additional copies around the same centre point. Hope that works for you!

    The alt(pc) + click or cmd(Mac) + click means to hold the alt/cmd key down and click/press the main button on your mouse.

    Hey there - I'll type out the process that I use for creating copies around a centre point. This applies here and to the mandala video you also commented on. First you'll want to have the object you'd like to work with selected. With an object selected press R to activate the rotate tool. Then you move the cursor to the area you'd like to be your centre point. I generally have guides or a circle set up so that I can use the same centre point over and over again in a document. Then holding option (Mac) or alt (Win) click on the centre point. The rotate dialog box should pop up. There you can enter in a specific angle for the rotation or you can let Illustrator do the math for you by typing in 360/10. (360 being a complete circle and 10 being the number of copies you'd like to evenly space around that circle). Then you would commit this transformation by pressing "copy" and not "ok". This should generate a copy of your original object rotated around your centre point by the measurement you entered. Finally without making any other transformations or deselecting your object use the Transform again command (CMD + D (Mac) or CTRL + D (Win)) several times to quickly create copies around your centre point . Hoping this helps. Let me know if you're still stuck.

    To me that sounds like you didn't have an object selected. Using the rotate tool, the rotate dialog box will still appear and allow you to define a centre point and press copy even if you have nothing selected.

    Could you check to see if you have a fill active in the colour panel? The original shapes that you rotate and copy should only use strokes to have the middle appear transparent.

    Sounds like this is for Machintosh users. No wonder this did not work with PC.

    You're right. I have used Macs almost exclusively for the last 20+ years. The actual content in the video should translate over to PC with the only major difference being the CMD key on Mac gets replaced with the Alt key on PC. I don't believe there are any other features that I talked about that don't work on PC
