HOW TO CREATE DEER BEDDING AREAS IN TIMBER COUNTRY

Tired of trying to locate where deer are bedding is a vast landscape of trees?? This is a technique we use to not only create strategically placed deer bedding areas, but also improve the habitat. These temporary forest openings not only provide cover but also increase native forest through an increase in herbaceous cover but also woody browse. It's no wonder these are some of our favorite ways to improve habitat and hunting success!

Any input on clear cuts and burns in rocky terrain?

Did you try to drop the trees to give deer a travel lane or just drop them wherever they fell?

The Element wherever they fell, because we flush cut 50% of them and it’s easy to move through

Looks like most of the cutting you did was flush just wondering why you didn't do a couple hinge cuts leave some area for bedding right there where they could get in under the cover

We did do some hinge cuts they just weren’t highlighted in the video. We typically hinge cut a 1/3, flush cut 1/3, and flush cut and treat with herbicide the other 1/3.

Can you explain the reason for leaving the taller stumps versus cutting near ground level? Seems like a tripping hazard and bad on tractor tires for later harvest.l

The next time a skidder would be here is years later, and that’s after several fires, it’s doubtful to be a problem at that point. Also, we’re not trying to grow timber here it’s for bedding and young forest for wildlife

@@Landandlegacytube I understand all of that. And if a bedding area it will not get a lot of people traffic. Just seems like it wouldn’t take much more to cut it flush. BTW, I LOVE your podcasts! You have truly made me rethink the whole management program! THANK YOU!

@@lonniechartrand and being honest, cutting in multiple acres at ground level versus a few inches higher is night and day for keeping a chainsaw sharp and helping with back pain. Thank you!

Hey Matt. Did you treat the stumps? All of them, or some of them? Why did you decide to drop vs hack and squirt? Was that for the browse and current year cover? Love your stuff

Sean Balch so many reasons why we didn’t do hack n squirt it would require another video to explain. This area lacks young forest, which is crucial for a lot of species both game and non game. It provides excellent cover and forage (especially in late winter for deer) using a herbicide would illuminate that benefit. Hack n squirt is a tool in forestry management, it’s not the only tool.

Very dangerous to utilize hack n squirt where you’re going to burn. We only recommend hack n squirt on midstory thinning
